School Report Dear Students, Staff, Parents, Caregivers and Community Members, We are now into the first week of May and despite the lingering coolness in the weather, there is anticipation in the air as we work toward a safe and strong finish to the 2016-2017 school year. Joining us on staff for the last part of this year is Mr. Byron Thiessen who is working with Team Truth in our Special Education Center. We are also taking the time to thank our teacher candidates for the completion of their learning and teaching assignment with us at the end of April. All the best to all our teacher candidates as they continue in their learning, and pre- pare for their teaching service. U of M: Derek Barnet, Dexter Frank, and Claire Rodger, and from the U of W: Ali- son Jonk, Alexander Braun, Anna Currie, Katie DeRoo, Laura Carroll, Catherine Nguyen, Sean Fitzmaurice, Mo- na Friesen and Nikeesha Williams. January to March was our longest time of sustained learning and teaching and the spring break gave us a little time for reflection before we resumed for our final term. On the literacy front, our ELA teachers implemented the use of the developmental spelling assessment (Words Their Way) as well as the writing continuum. You may be familiar with both as they are part of the assessments in elementary and we have been able to extend it to the middle years to further assist us in supporting our students learning through ongoing assessment of student pro- gress. Our boys and girls basketball teams at both junior and grade nine level competed with very good effort at the di- visional level and we are currently transitioning to outdoor soccer and softball. May and June will be busy months filled with learning activities and many deadlines, so please review and make note of those that relate to your children in the attached May and June calendar. Please note in particular the exam schedules in June, followed by opportunities for students to enjoy experiential learning across our school with mini courses and a diversity of teams and school wide activities Please also keep in mind that our Awards Ceremony for our Grade 7, 8 and 9 students will be on Tuesday, June 27 th from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at our school. Details will be included in our invitation letters to parents/ caregivers in June to join our students in celebrating their achievements. We can also expect strong representa- tion from our community leaders and government representatives to join us in marking our students’ milestones of achievement. In the evening of June 27 th , our Grade 9 students will enjoy their farewell dinner and dance at the Viscount Gort and in preparation for this undertaking, students are raising funds to offset the cost of their tick- ets. Please do consider supporting them. 567 Bannatyne Avenue Winnipeg, MB R3A 0G8 Mr. Vinh Huynh, Principal Ainslie Loria, Vice-Principal Telephone: 204-786-5631 Fax: 204-783-6473 Website: www.winnipegsd.ca/schools/HughJohnMacdonald

School Report Page 2 Continued

At a community level, we will be hosting a pop up event that is being organized on behalf of the City of Winnipeg to obtain feedback from residents regarding the West Alexander to East Exchange to provide the important east-west connections between Waterfront Drive and Sherbrook Street. This project will look at options for improving the exist-ing painted bike lanes to protected lanes so that they are comfortable for people of all ages and abilities. Please note that this event will take place on Tuesday, June 20th and details will come out soon as to the time and content for the consultation.

Finally, all current 7 and 8 students are preregistered this year and an option sheet has been sent home for students to work with their parents on the selection of option courses. This new pre-registration is designed, as much as pos-sible, to be a seamless transition for your child to be registered in advance for homerooms, and course selections for next year.

Thank you.

PINK DAY— April 12, 2017

Spring is here with it’s up and down weather of

snow, rain, cold or wind, but team humility has

embraced it all with gratitude. Learning continues

both inside and outside the classroom. Student

Teachers finalizing their practicum have been busy

winding up their units with reviews, tests and cel-

ebrations. It has been such a busy time for our

staff and students. Some students in our team

have also participated in the Science fair as well as

the Science challenge at the University of Manito-

ba with great enthusiasm and success. Thanks to

our parents who helped with transportation and

attending with their sons and daughters to offer

moral support.

Team Humility has participated in a number of ex-

citing field trips which have included; Bowling at Po-

lo Park and an afternoon at Youth For Christ (YFC).

The field trips aside from being part of our out door

learning, have also contributed to our team building

activities and connections. Our upcoming field trips

will be to the Millennium Library on May 18th for

book reading in the morning and track and field on

May 11th. Other school activities for the month of

May and June are posted in the attached school cal-

endar. Thank you for your support

TJ's Gift Foundation visited for an incredible as-

sembly. TJ's Gift is an organization dedicated to

supporting youth in making positive choic-

es. Karen Wiebe who founded the organization

with her late husband Floyd, lost her son TJ due

to his addiction and drug use. She has dedicated

her life to making sure other youth don't make

the same mistakes that resulted in her son's

death. Coupled with an amazing musical perfor-

mance by "Bold As Lions", TJ's Gift was a power-

ful presentation with an important message for

the students, "You all matter." Karen's dedica-

tion was further demonstrated as she provided

all the students with her personal cell phone

number, encouraging them to contact her if they

ever needed anything. For more information on

Building Math through Our Classroom Circle

I learned from my grandmother that when we are part of a storytelling circle, we

have to listen and speak from our hearts. This is an Indigenous perspective of

valuing and respecting our roots as human beings. At the beginning of each math

class, the students and I sit in a circle. This allows me to welcome my students.

For the following five minutes, we use a “white board” on the floor in the middle

of the circle where students are able to listen and see the introduction or explana-

tion of the topic. My goal is to continue using a math circle to build a better un-

derstanding of math skills and ourselves. In other words, it is to build skills with

humanity.

Trip to Assiniboine Park

On April 28th, the Wisdom Team teachers, educational

assistants, students teachers and our students had a

field trip to the Assiniboine Park. Some students rode

their bikes to the park. The weather was perfect!! We

played frisbee, soccer and walked across to the park. It

was beautiful to see our students arriving at Assini-

boine Park on their bikes.

We believe in the importance of building relation-

ships with students to support them better in

their educational journey, and this field trip al-

lowed us to build these connections. Human con-

nections shape our identity as human beings. We

hope that this will be the beginning of a conversa-

tion that stretches from the field trip, to the class-

room, into our community, and back into the

Ms. M. Obradovic Mr. B. Mymin Ms. A. Babynchuck

Team Truth would like to thank Mr. Zywylo and Mr. Theissen for their

work with Ms. Elliot’s class while she has been away. Her students have

been very welcoming to them. Room 301 and 314 have been very busy wel-

coming new students to their ever expanding EAL classrooms. As part of

our team building initiatives, we will be going bowling as a team activity on

the morning of Tuesday May 9th at Polo Park Lanes. We will also be going

to the Cindy Klassen Recreation Centre on the morning of Friday May 19th.

Finally, a big thanks to the LAC students in room 215 for doing all the

shopping for the cafeteria this year. They’ve worked very hard to ensure

that the breakfast and lunch programs always have all of the ingredients

they need to provide students with nutritious meals.
