can contribute significantly in making schools progressive.
Aims of Educational Guidance
The aims of educational guidance are as wide as those of education. 't least some aims must
be fulfilled so that all students can attain their goals. These are as follows:
). To ac*uaint students with all school programmes and functions and to tell them about
their needs.
+. To ac*uaint the students with their interests, tendencies, aptitudes and personality
traits.
. To discover their abilities and limitations so that they can progress within their
limitations.
-. To tell them about the advantages of co"curricular activities and participation in them.
. To assist students in finding educational opportunities
/. To tell students about different sub&ects, curricula and training programmes.
7. To provide for individual counselling. 0ometimes individual interview should be
conducted with students in order to solve their problems.
#. To advise students about new books related to different sub&ects.
1. To cultivate study habits in students.
)2. To discover study material for students and to motivate them to study and adopt it.)). To conduct collective guidance and individual counselling from time to time in order
to solve their problems.
)+. To motivate students in taking part in collective activities so that they can cultivate
such *ualities as leadership and social service etc.
). To discover career opportunities for students according to their interests, intelligence
and capabilities.
)-. To assist students for ad&ustment in the new environment
). To connect drop"out students to educational programmes again.
These are minimum programmes which should be run by trained guides, counsellors and
teachers in cooperation with one another so that every student is able to identify his abilities
and can develop himself in every possible manner so as to be able to achieve his goal, and
thus be helpful in the development of himself and nation.

3ones has determined the following aims of educational guidance:
). To assist students in knowing about future possibilities and e4pectations of school:
'fter having passed fifth, eighth and secondary schools, the students are faced with
the problem of taking admission to such schools which are useful for them.
Educational guidance assists them in this respect.+. To assists students in getting knowledge about different school aims and functions:
!ifferent schools are meant for different types of curricula. Every school has its own
aims and form5 for e4ample: multipurpose schools, medical colleges, vocational
colleges, agricultural colleges etc. 0tudents can seek admission to them as per their
interests and mental abilities. The aim of educational guidance is to ac*uaint the
students with these aims and functions.
. To ac*uaint students with sub&ects given by schools: This has already been said earlier
that different schools are related to different sub&ects, but due to the difference of
sub&ects and multi"branches of a sub&ect presents a misleading case for a student.
Educational guidance assists a student in removing this doubt so that he can select
suitable sub&ects as per his abilities and interests.-. To ac*uaint students with eligibilities for admissions to schools: Every school has its
own administrative structure and rules and regulations. 0ome schools conduct
entrance e4aminations and interview. 0ome minimum educational *ualifications are
needed for admission to some schools. (t is the aim of educational guidance to make
students aware about the rules and regulations of admission so that they do not face
any difficulty at the time of admission.
. To assist students in ad&ustment between school curriculum and school life: 6ith the
change in school, a student arrives at a new environment. (t is necessary for him to
ad&ust with the new social environment. (n this new environment, he needs assistance
in the following aspects:
a 8ultivations of new habits of study b 'ssistance in selection of sub&ects
/. To ac*uaint students with details of competitive e4aminations: 'fter having
completed education, some type of employment is needed. 9ecause the vacancies are
always limited as compared to the number of candidates, so the best way out is to
conduct competitive e4aminations such as ;08, 9anking recruitment e4amination,
etc. (t is necessary for the students to know about these e4aminations fully.
Educational guidance should provide these details to students.
7. To guide in selection of vocation: 't times a student is not able to decide which
vocation he should choose for himself. <e is not able to coordinate his abilities with
the vocation or &ob, because he is not aware of the nature of different types of
vocations and his future in them. (t is the function of vocational guidance to removethese doubts and guide him in the right direction.
#. To assist students in knowing their interests, attitudes and likeness: 'll people are not
alike. 0ome are more talented than others. 9y telling about individual difference to an
individual is meant to tell him and guide him for which vocation or &ob he is suitable
and able. (n this form, educational guidance is the basis of vocational guidance.
Ericcson has determined the following aims of educational guidance:
). 8areful study of an individual
+. (ndividual counselling
. 'ppointment and follow"up-. To provide information services
