BI-WEEKLY E-NEWSLETTER ISSUE 8 - Page 1 December 15, 2017 ail ann Parents, Greenville County Schools is constantly working to improve its programs and services to our students and families. Every five years, we go through a comprehensive strategic planning process including annual progress reviews as part of AdvancED’s accreditation. These planning and review processes are important in validating the quality of our academic programs. They also help colleges recognize quality schools, which can play a role in determining a student’s college acceptance. This is our year to revise the strategic plan, but we need your input to make sure we get it right. In January, the GCS Board of Trustees and a team of approximately 80 community members, business leaders, educators, parents, and students will work together to determine three to five long-term objectives that will be the focus of our district’s actions over the next five years. To help that group identify the objectives that are most important to you, we need you to provide feedback via an electronic AdvancED parent survey. The data collected from this survey will also help individual schools revise local strategic plans to better respond to the needs of their students, families, and communities. You may take this survey anytime from December 4-20, so don’t wait! Please submit your survey as soon as possible using the link shown below, or visit the GCS website at www.greenville.k12.sc.us and click on the Strategic Planning Parent Survey button on the front page. If you have multiple children in our schools, fill out a separate survey to reflect the needs and experiences of each of your children. Student and teacher surveys are also an important part of this process, but those will be completed at school. Parent Survey Link: If you don’t have convenient internet access, visit your child’s school. Front office personnel will provide you with access to a computer linked to this survey. Thank you in advance for your participation in this important process.

ail ann Parents,

Greenville County Schools is constantly working to improve its programs and

services to our students and families. Every five years, we go through a

comprehensive strategic planning process including annual progress reviews

as part of AdvancED’s accreditation. These planning and review processes are

important in validating the quality of our academic programs. They also help

colleges recognize quality schools, which can play a role in determining a

student’s college acceptance.

This is our year to revise the strategic plan, but we need your input to make sure we get it right. In

January, the GCS Board of Trustees and a team of approximately 80 community members, business

leaders, educators, parents, and students will work together to determine three to five long-term

objectives that will be the focus of our district’s actions over the next five years. To help that group

identify the objectives that are most important to you, we need you to provide feedback via an electronic

AdvancED parent survey. The data collected from this survey will also help individual schools revise local

strategic plans to better respond to the needs of their students, families, and communities.

You may take this survey anytime from December 4-20, so don’t wait! Please submit your survey as soon

as possible using the link shown below, or visit the GCS website at www.greenville.k12.sc.us and click on

the Strategic Planning Parent Survey button on the front page. If you have multiple children in our

schools, fill out a separate survey to reflect the needs and experiences of each of your children. Student

and teacher surveys are also an important part of this process, but those will be completed at school.

Mann Has the Best Band. . .

On December 2nd the JL Mann Marching Patriots and JROTC were voted Best Marching Band in the

Greenville Christmas Parade. They made a splash wearing their green plumes and lights on their hats

and instruments from this year's show, Encounter, and enjoyed sharing Christmas spirit with parade

goers.

The Marching Band had a busy fall season, playing at football games and competing on weekends.

November 9, they had a great Veteran's Day concert to honor our military service people. Students

worked very hard to prepare the music for this concert just at the end of marching season. Since

then, they've been preparing for the Christmas concert on December 14. Many students are now

also participating in Winter Guard, Winter Percussion, and Jazz Band, going on to prepare for

competitions after Christmas.

This is a truly talented group of students who love music, encouraging each other, and having fun

together. Band Boosters celebrated the Marching Patriots at a November banquet that included

awards and a fun slideshow from this season. Some of the funniest pictures were band parents trying

to play and march with their student's instrument! We're happy to have such a great group of students

representing Mann!

This Week in NewTech@Mann

Physics Students All Fired Up – Students in Ms. Hanor’s physics classes tested their catapults during their final product

presentations. The students had to use their knowledge of two-dimensional trajectory in order to launch a small wooden

projectile at their target. Some students launched from a very far range. Some students were unsuccessful in hitting

their target, but had ideas for how to be successful on their next launch based on their understanding of the content.

Best Foot Forward – Students in Coach Crowe’s digital multimedia classes are currently working on a project that has

them making a newsletter covering a day in the life at Mann. Students are encouraged to seek out information on and

highlight the life of any person at Mann that they are unfamiliar with whether it be a custodian, an administrator, or

another upper classmen. Students will ultimately showcase eight people at the school in their newsletter. Students

spent this week contacting and scheduling a time to interview their chosen participants. They also practiced introducing

themselves and shaking hands with one another.
