Enabling every young Mauritian to realize their potential to change the world.

A glance at the world today tells us that the world is advancing in technology so fast making it a very connected mobile place. Emerging Markets are increasing their global powers which would result into rebalancing of economic power. Economic disparity is still a problem to be solved and environmental changes still seem to be far away to hit the priority list of the work force of the planet.

Now, the quest is the balance between so many opportunities increasing every second in this world v/s the challenges on the other hand which keep the planet still in threat. AIESEC in Mauritius accepted this challenge of getting the balance which is required through enabling young people to capitalize on the opportunities and to find ways not to get stuck with the challenges by realizing their true potential in shaping the world of today and tomorrow.

Being operating from past 4 years AIESEC Mauritius has been providing young people of the country, a combination of practical Market positioning and understanding, Leadership experience, Management techniques and the international exposure needed to think globally while acting locally. Co-creating plans and projects to achieve the set goals, efficiency and effectiveness of planning and implementing strategies accompanied with handling of a diverse team altogether makes a very short intense stay in AIESEC for any of our members.

The presence of AIESEC increased from three universities UoM, UTM and MITD to Middlesex, CTI and EIILM with the extensive work which we did in this year with the vision to engage and develop every Mauritian. Young people of today definitely will take over the world whether it is corporate, development, education or government sector and that makes it very important for the different leading sectors to invest in the youth today to make them responsible leaders with some cultivated values to make the world a better and brighter planet.

This year, the organization focused on the sustainability of the operations both on the National and the local level. Followed by which some changes in the policies were made to make the organization self sustainable keeping in mind the growth in operational activities witnessed from past 4 years. This year we grew in operations with 25 % compared to last year. Also one of the major highlight of the year has been the UBS Excellence Award given to AIESEC Mauritius in Kenya for its excellent performance in activating youth leadership and impacting the society. This made

DanaBeing the Business Development Director of AIESEC Mauritius was one of the most challenging and extraordinary experiences I have been through until now. Working in a totally different environment and within an international team helped me to enlarge my views and to learn to adapt to various working situations. This experience also helped me discover new things about myself, not only professionally but personally too, as well as building relationships with high caliber business leaders of Mauritius. Being part of the national team of AIESEC Mauritius was an incredible opportunity to discover new levels of this organization and to work with people which are willing to work hard for their own development.

Deepa“Most of the people leading any organization will describe their experience full of learning and challenges which ultimately contributes to their personal and professional growth. Indeed it’s completely true but beside that, this year I really found the essence of work and happiness in my life. I discovered things that truly make a difference in the society and within oneself. The journey of understanding yourself in order to understand the world better also started while I was leading 200 people. Patience, tolerance, decisions, changes, failures, successes, crisis, empathy, determination, excellence, people, impact comprised my last year which is similar to getting learning of 3-4 years squeezed in 1 short year. I am more aware, more responsible and confident of what I want to do, how I want to change the world as I finish my 5th year in AIESEC. There is no other platform which could make young people so much aware of themselves and the world, to change themselves and hence the world for better. AIESEC truly changes life.”

SeanMy journey as Director of Incoming Exchange in AIESEC Mauritius was a very fulfilling one. It was unquestionably one of kind experience which changed the very course of my life. I have worked with remarkable individuals who inspired me with their indomitable will to impact the society throughout the 20 projects ran the past 12 months. Working in an international team triggered a lot of personal and professional development and I became more independent. Being in the national team was a brilliant opportunity to discover how an organization functions and will definitely contribute to make me a better entrepreneur.

Internship

AIESEC Locally

In the year 2011-2012, AIESEC in Mauritius facilitated over 350 international internships for both Mauritians going abroad and Internationals coming in the country. These Internships were in different fields like Management, technical and Community based Projects. This year there was an increase in the absolute growth of internships which is due to the fact that, it was a priority to keep the increased membership involved in the internship program. As fascilitating or going for an International internship is the key way to develop members in the organization. It creates a space for young student members of AIESEC to understand the cooperate, development and education sector

Moreover the organization this year has witnessed an incredible growth in the global ranking of AIESEC

Membership is the most important asset of our organization and one of our priorities was to increase it and to make it more available to as many Mauritians students as possible. AIESEC is present in Univeristy of Mauritius, University of Technology and MITD but we have members from CTI and Middlesex University as well.

This year we had a membership of 240 members, which is a 10% growth from previous year. Our members are working on social projects, are involved in the global internship program and are handling different issues in Mauritius. Our members are between 20-25 years old and they have different academic backgrounds from economics, management, finance, engineering and social studies.

within 110 countries. Mauritius is among the top 40 most performing countries. This is due to the immense growth in membership and the will of young people to grow by exploring the opportunities which AIESEC provides. AIESEC Mauritius is an example in the network for having reached this level of operation, within a time span of 4 years since its extablishment. This commitment to provide quality experiences to young Mauritian and internationals was recognised by AIESEC International at the International Congress held in Kenya, International President’s Meeting held in Hungary and the Africa Exchange and Leadership Seminar held in Mozambique.

“Rogers has partnered with AIESEC for the past 4 years. It is the perfect platform to prepare our youth for the world of work as young graduates are exposed to key challenges such as managing diversity, driving projects from start to finish, managing budgets and becoming financially independent.”

LR roles and LCP Messages

Team Leader ProgramOne of the main things that AIESEC offers to its members are various leadership positions at local and national level. This year we increased with 9 leadership positions from last year having a total of 62 leadership roles which were offered to members of AIESEC in mauritius in order to develop themselves and to learn and improve their abilities as leaders.

Our members had the chance to lead project teams, functional departments, conferences and events. It was an unique opportunity for them to learn strategic management, setting and achievement of goals and reporting.

I have been a member of AIESEC for more than 2 year and there are no words to describe this experience. 2 years ago, I would have never imagined myself leading 120 students at the University of Mauritius. I joined the organization to learn more about cultural diversity and get ‘involved’ in the campus activities, then I grabbed every opportunity as they cropped up and here I am, president of the University of Mauritius Local Committee.Since July 2011 I have been leading a team of 5 individuals to coordinate the activities on the campus. I have learned so much in one year through this position and I have dealt with situations I would have never thought of. Keeping the interest of members is what I was able to achieve through constant innovation in the meetings which were held.

I really think that without my team, my experience would have not been complete. They in fact taught me patience, acceptance and tolerance. Each individual of this team had his own different way of contributing, reacting and dealing with situations; each one of them was unique and so I had to learn how to manage 5 very distinct characters. I must admit that this was not an easy task and at some point I was relating my psychology studies to them. I truly cherish this relationship with my team mates.

I also realized that attitude is very important aspect of leadership. Being a leader is being a role model, shaping the behavior of others towards a common vision and this is not the easiest task. We often do not see how much our attitude can have a tremendous impact on others, being positive way or negative. This quote is how I would describe the importance of attitude in our everyday life:

“Attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference.” W.C

To conclude, I believe that joining AIESEC, an organisation that unites thousands of youth around the world, was the best decision I could have made. This organisation that provides with a experience that sometimes gives you sleepless nights but also creates

unforgettable memories. I am each day a little more passionate about this crazy organisation and I just hope that more and more people will discover it and will understand that they have the whole world in their hands.

The five months I have had the opportunity to coordinate AIESEC in MITD, was a journey taken with an open mind and heart. From my first day here and my interaction with the Mauritian youth until my last goodbye, this experience has kept me on my toes with excitement and has driven me to push the limits of my commitment and passion towards a higher level.

Looking back on this five month journey, there have been ups and downs and the challenges still persist. “Easy” is not a word that would define working with this entity and I have felt it throughout every day of my experience here. I might not have been able to bring a sensitive positive change upon AIESEC MITD and this would be my only regret.

Still, the words that come to my mind when I think of AIESEC MITD are “worth it”. Success is not a part of our daily routine, but the rare moments when it happens are strong enough to boost our spirits in hope and commitment towards making a change.

As I am ending my experience, I am taking home from AIESEC MITD the memory of the people that I have met, their honest smiles, their bright minds and their open hearts. I will always keep in mind the times when I was not considered a foreigner that came to Mauritius, a tourist, but an equal, a colleague, a friend.

All together, coming to Mauritius was one of the best decision I made, for the learning I have had, for the challenges I have encountered and for the wonderful people that took my dreams and made them theirs.

Andra BarneaPresident 2011-2012Local Committee AIESEC in Mauritius Institute of Training and Development

If I was to describe my journey in AIESEC for the past year in one word, it would be transformation. I developed my leadership skills by leading a functional team for half a year and I got to know what team spirit was all about. I learned to be hard to myself, to plan, to execute, to lead. I failed. I saw how an indomitable will can transform a big challenge to a wonderful achievement. I was transformed and I really believe in the change that we are bringing to this society.

AIESEC opened its doors to the students of the University of Technology Mauritius in September 2010 with the establishment of an expansion and even if we did not have the best possible start, we took our time to capitalize on our strengths to have a constant growth both in terms of membership and Exchange with an increase of 300% and 150% respectively.

This wonderful experience, I owe it to all the remarkable persons I encountered, coming from all over the world. These caring people truly inspired me and I look forward to meet more of them. AIESEC is a people’s organisation. This is also one of my main reasons, why I stood up to become Local Committee President 2011-2012. I want to reach out to more people and provide them with such amazing experiences and show them that an AIESEC journey is really a “life changing experience”.

I have been in A|IESEC for more than 18 months now, and today I am really thankful to the platform this organisation provided me to unleash my potential. This quote from Maitreya The Friend of all Souls is the best description of the past 18 months:

Deelen Ashley SinnasamyPresident 2011-2012Local Committee AIESEC University of Technology Mauritius

“In our experience AIESEC students possess exactly the qualities we are looking for: international and intercultural awareness, integrity, intuition and communication skills. We are always happy to have talented, committed and open-minded AIESEC students on internships with us and to share their spirit which enriches the corporate culture tremendously.”

Outgoing ExchangeAIESEC as a global organization runs a lot of programs which facilitate leadership development, connecting youth to the corporate, development and education sectors of the society in turn giving them the needed exposure and experience. As a result, one of the key programs is the Global Internship program which offers youth across the globe an opportunity to go on an international internship, which is one of the most intense experience AIESEC offers and links together our global network. Every country as an entity of the global network sends and receive students for international internships. The program is divided into Incoming Exchange Program and Outgoing Exchange Program.

Outgoing Exchange Program Under the Outgoing Exchange Program, we offer young talented university students and recent graduates the opportunity to go for different kinds of internships abroad in different sectors to practice what they have learnt in university and get a professional experience. By going for an AIESEC internship, students not only get to work with a company in a different country, but they also acquire a deeper understanding of its market, people and working culture. The internship also lets them explore their own working style and gives them a practical work experience, which contributes to their personal and professional development, ultimately making them an employee of choice amongst top graduates. Since 2008, AIESEC in Mauritius has successfully sent more than 80 local Mauritian students to different countries and facilitated their international experience. AIESEC in its Outgoing Exchange.

George Bernard Shaw says “Life isn’t about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself.”

After completing my studies in JUNE 2011, I was looking forward for an incredible experience to be able to boost up my career and I left for an internship in Romania at the end of September 2011. I was working at Liceul Traian (Traian High School) in the city of Constanta and was delivering English communication lessons to intense English and philology students from 9-12 grades.

During classes, various topics were being discussed and among them were cultural background of Romania, Mauritius, education system in countries, presentation skills, time management, career interest of the students, environment and others. It made me discover the country from the point of view of the coming generations and definitely contributed to better understand the Romanian society.

These 7 months spent abroad triggered both personal and professional development. It was a real voyage of self discovery since I often had step out of my comfort zone to cope with the prevailing situation. This experience was also culturally very diverse through the different encounters with Indians, Croatians, Brazilians, Germans, Chinese, Malays and of course Romanians.

This internship also gave me the opportunity to represent Mauritius in global villages in Constanta and in Sofia, Bulgaria. I was amazed how people were interested in our small island and felt really proud of my country especially when Mauritius was awarded Best Island Destination of the World.

“You have to risk going too far to discover just how far you can really go” by T.S Eliot. I took the opportunity and now I can proudly say that I have gained far more than I expected. Indeed it was my first travel to Romania but not the last one.

When I learnt that I had been chosen to go on an internship to India, I really did not know what to expect from it. I landed in New Delhi on 7th January 2012. Overnight I found myself in Chandigarh, a city that I was completely unknown and that I would subsequently adopt. I knew nothing about her except that it was the first planned city in India. The first days were not easy. It was cold (0-2 degrees at night) and we could hardly see the sun during the day. I would soon become a school teacher in pre-primary and teach English to little angels. Overall my work was good; staff treated me with respect and everybody called me ‘ Sir’. I learnt a lot being with children of this age. I always told them that they were my sunshine. Their laughter and smiles warmed my heart every day.

My house was like the United Nations. We were fourteen living in Sector 49 of Chandigarh. My house was rarely silent. We were strangers at first, but we soon became a family, creating relationships and building them, stronger day by day. We travelled together, ate together, slept together, and tell all our woes. My family has grown beyond my island and I can now say that if tomorrow I got the chance to travel again I would know where to go.

AIESEC’s life does not stop when you leave the organization, it will follow you forever.

Experience is something you treasure throughout your life. I made AIESEC a platform for me to examine my personal values. My internship in Chandigarh has helped me to develop myself. The awesome people I met inspired me and enabled me to grow. I keep on telling others that they should go for this life changing experience. After being a part of AIESEC, I have started to look at things in a different and more positive manner. With AIESEC I have become a global citizen. Worked in a beautiful country called India with people from more than 6 different countries. It was a wonderful experience and this experience has made me a global citizen . AIESEC stands for leaders and consequently being part of this organization makes me become one!

I am Radomalala RATSIMANETRIMANANA, I went on internship in Donetsk, Ukraine last June and July. I wanted to share with you how my experience was.

I went to Ukraine for some weeks to work in a summer camp. It is amazing that only some weeks (no more than 6 weeks) are enough to positively change a great part of a life. I was taking care of about 40 young children (from 7 to 9 years old) with 4 other Ukrainian babysitters. It was not always easy, especially with the children but, wherever we go, there will always be some inconvenience that we will need to face and it’s in these difficulties that we construct ourselves and make us grow stronger and stronger.

The most important thing that I’ve learnt from that experience is ME. I’ve become more and more close to myself and more and more aware about whom really am I and what can I achieve. I have learnt that in the past, I set to low limitations for myself; I can perform much better if I develop my self-confidence and remove all of these stupid limitations from my mind. There is no star that we can’t reach, no destiny that we can’t fulfil.

To summarize it, I will say that

“My internship in Ukraine was the best learning experience I’ve got so far. It helped me to acquire knowledge on other cultures, understand and appreciate them without neglecting mine. I have discovered the enormous richness hidden behind this word: DIVERSITY.”

AIESEC Mauritius also provides the opportunity to Mauritian companies to bridge the HR gap prevailing in their organisation through our Global Internship Program. Companies can tap in our pool of talented young individual through our network extending to 110 countries. HSBC Mauritius, T10 and Wmedia Ltd are the companies that benefitted from this program for the past term 11-12.

Coming to Mauritius was one of the best things I have done in my life. If I would compare it to my expectations before arriving I would have to say that now I feel I didn’t expect anything. Working for HSBC was a very strong professional experience where I had to work with a diverse group of people on a very complicated and interesting project. Every day was a new challenge and a new success. The moment I will never forget is my last working day. I looked back on all the problems, solutions, people, events, successes, failures and I just could not believe that I managed to make all that happen. I was challenged to push my limits and exit my comfort zone so many times that it couldn’t be anything but amazing.

This was just one facet of my internship. The whole magic of this island is, of course, something that cannot be put in the words. Such a small place but so much energy. I have seen all the stars in the sky, slept on the beach, climbed the tallest mountain and see more rainbows than all the people that I know. This brought

some special feelings and made me who I am today. I see things differently now. Mauritius has brought some new colors that I did not even know existed.

And the last, most important thing, that I cannot forget even if I wanted to, is the people. I have met an enormous number of remarkable people and have seen how happiness works all over the world. Some of these people inspired me, some of them taught me new things, some of them made me laugh or cry, some of them were the most fun ever and some of them were true rock stars. All in all, I have never, in this short time, made so many friends that I want to keep forever.

Experience has shown me that AIESEC handles its affairs very pleasantly and efficiently.”

Elyn“Measure of Success is not winning awards - is doing something you appreciate, something you believe is worthwhile”

There are over 6 billion people in the world and more than 1.2 billion are young people. The power of youth to inspire and be the change the world needs is beyond measure. Everyday, this simple fact inspires us as the world largest student-run organization. And we believe that AIESEC is bringing youth the positive impact, which enables them to change the world.

Today, AIESEC in Mauritius is undoubtedly growing across all facets and levels. We are witnessing the kind of growth generations in the past could only dream about and we have only just started!

In the meanwhile, Is AIESEC meant for every young person and if yes then, why do we let our past achievements limit our ambition today.

As the generation of AIESECers who will lead the organization in the exactly middle of 2015 era we have the immense responsibility to take the organization to a point where it can dream bigger than it ever has, where it can look deep within and challenge its very core to emerge stronger, bigger and better than it ever has been.

I am confident in the abilities, knowledge, experience, commitment and attitude of the AIESEC MC 2012-2013 team. We realize that what lies in front of us is a unique opportunity to have probably the best time of our lives and for that, we are very committed to give our whole selves during the next year. This team represents the best of the organization and it’s very clear that the best of us will stand out with your contribution and insights.

We are here to work with you, building together to lead the change, dream about the future of AIESEC, and ensure that we always keep the sense of achievement and growth.

Thank you,

Elyn
