AIESEC Ilorin welcomes you to the city of Ilorin, the confluence of

Nigerian cultures, In Kwara State the harmony state..Going through

this booklet is just another step towards discovering something new

about yourself and the world at large. Our local committee is geared

towards ensuring you make the most out of this exchange

experience. We do this by making sure you live in a comfortable,

and peaceful environment, so you can put in your best in creating a

positive impact on the society and at the same time, develop your

personal skills.

Ilorin is a peaceful place and calm town filled with friendly

locals. The weather is friendly, With beautiful vegetation and

landscapes. The city is rich in both history and culture. The LC

will ensure you explore all of this as part of the awesome

experience you will have. Be Open-minded, discover Africa,

discover yourself, enjoy the people, the scenery, the weather,

the ancient town and most importantly,, be truly global!!!!

Their aims are centred on improving the quality of life and human dignity, solving family conflicts etcetera. They organise projects all year round that is geared towards attaining their goals. JOB DESCRIPTION AND REQUIEMENTS

o It is required that the intern be a good spokes person.

o Interns would be responsible for coming up with strategies, planning events, developing

and managing projects to raise funds for the NGO.

o Intern(s) must have a fair knowledge of English Language.

o Intern(s) would participate in the activities of the LC.

Target age group : 17---30yrs

Project duration- All year round.

Project works would be during the normal working days (Mon-Fri) while weekends are set aside for LC activities which includes: meetings, conferences, campaigns, parties, games, Trips, etcetera

o Intern(s) must have a good knowledge of web designing, internet surfing, and basic ICT skills.

o Intern(s) will be handling the entire virtual office of the NGO. This includes Social media,

online promotion, website maintenance, blogs, etcetera.

o Intern(s) would participate in activities/Projects organized by the NGO and the LC.

Royal heritage health foundation is a registered non governmental, Non-for-profit Organisation. Its aim(s) and objective(s) is/are centred around health issues of humans particularly the vulnerable, ignorant and helpless population. This includes family planning awareness, assistance for children with medical conditions, etcetera .They carry out projects all year round in relation to fulfilling their aims and objectives.

Woman and child rights is a registered non governmental, Non-for-profit Organisation. Their focus is mainly on the “legalities” involves with woman and child rights. This includes educating the not-too-knowledgeable women population on certain issues like HIV, family planning, support/defence for/of the helpless women and child and a host of others. Several projects centred around this aim are developed, managed and completed all year round. By so doing, they contribute their own quota of positive impact to the society.

o Intern(s) must have public speaking skills, and should know a little English

awareness for HIV, basic “legalities” involved in woman and child rights defense,

family planning etcetera.

LC ACTIVITIES o CAREER FAIR: The LC would be hosting career fair and interns that are present during

this period would be opportune to be on the organizing committee team

and thus enable the interns gain more knowledge of AIESEC activities

and practical work experience.

o RECRUITMENT: AIESEC Ilorin recruits students for the team member/ leader

program, and interns present in the LC during this time would be

opportune to be part of the organizing committee.

o OGX SALES DRIVE: This involves driving Outgoing exchanges sales and helping

the LC attain its peak as regards the OGX. This event usually takes

place in the LC between February and April. So interns who are

present in the LC during this period can be part of the team and in

turn be able to also attract potential experts for their entity.

N.B.: The additional activities in the LC, are our ways of making this exchange experience impact-

full. After thorough inspection of the various projects in this booklet, from which the interns are to

pick one, the work load attached to each of them, and the need to adhere to XPP’s 5 hours working

period per day, we decided to give interns the option of picking from any of this three additional

activities in order to make up a complete experience.

GLOBAL VILLAGE: This will be an opportunity for volunteers from different

countries who are working on our projects to showcase their different cultures.

Each country represented, must perform a presentation to increase the awareness

of participants. In fulfilment of this activity, each represented culture and country

must present something that is unique to their culture or country. A documentary

of the countries and cultures represented, would also be filmed afterwards. All

volunteers are thus expected to come with attires, artefacts and any other thing to

represent their culture and country.

o A free Nigerian SIM card will be given to the interns to facilitate communication.

o A free one week basic English tutorial for interns from Non - English speaking countries.

o A free one week tour around common places in Ilorin and Trips(Optional) to special tourist

centers in Kwara State and beyond.

o A buddy system for the interns which would facilitate integration.

SOCIAL NIGHTS: In the city of Ilorin, nights are always

spent in a relaxation mood. Friends meet to workout stress

through different fun activities. So integrating you into the

Ilorin lifestyle, means that most evening is planned for

interns hangout. Location includes clubs, relaxation centres

e.t.c.

LOGISTICS

o Please apply for a tourist visa during your visa application.

o You will be sent documents that will aid your visa

application.

o If your university, sponsor, college or departments requires

a signed or stamped document by us, please

inform us on time.

o If you encounter any problems during your visa

application, please inform us as soon as possible .

o Upon arrival in Ilorin, a team will be there to pick you up.

o For those coming by road, pick up fee depends on the

time of arrival and the luggage you are carrying.

o Please ensure you inform us of the day and time you will

be leaving your country; also tell us the arrival time for

your flight. This will aid us in preparing adequately for

your arrival.

BASIC LIVING COSTFEEDING

There are two possible options;

COOKING: Cooking utensils would be made available at the

house and interns would be given a detailed guide on how to

go about getting food items during integration. Price for food

items cannot be perfectly be predicted but items are priced

against quantity. If an intern wants this method, he or she

should just budget 200 Naira per meal.

RESTAURANT: There are different types of eateries in

Ilorin. And the food is either cheap or expensive depending

on the quality of the eatery of course.

The most common food you can find around Ilorin are:o Rice, beans, yam, Fufu, Eba, dodo(fried plantain) ,

Akara (bean cake), Bread, Varieties of fruits (Orange, apple, pineapple, watermelon, etc.), suya (roasted beef), and a wide variety of soup .A plate of food costs between 200 to 600 naira.Sachet water costs 5-10 naira while bottled water costs 60 naira. These can be bought from shops around.All drinks (Alcoholic and non alcoholic) can be found in open Shops, supermarkets and restaurants.

MINIMUM ESTIMATED BUDGET OF STAY

FOODTotal cost per day for food(3 Square meals) =600 naira.

Total Estimated cost for six weeks = 25,200 naira

TRANSPORTATIONo Transportation to the project site,

Total cost per day=120 naira

Total estimated cost for six weeks= 5,040 naira

o Transportation to other spots around Ilorin

Total Estimated cost for six weeks= 3000naira

TRIPS(optional).Transportation cost for all special tourism visits and other special events would be

covered by the volunteers (interns). The price varies. Interns Should budget a

minimum of 3000 Naira.

Accommodation will be provided by the LC at a fee. The Accommodation

may be a host family’s house, or a house provided by the N.G.O intern(s) would be

working with. Interns will pay a utility fee of $50 . This fee does not cover the damages

the intern(s) might cause during his/her stay.

Beds will be provided. So, all you need is a bed spread and cover clothes.

There are light outages sometimes which can last for 6-12 hours or more

occasionally.

The provided house, has basic facilities such as kitchen, bathroom,

toilet, electric outlets etcetera.

House cleaners are not available, so you will have to take care of the house on

your own.

There are house rules that have to be obeyed. Please ensure you obey them and

endeavour to integrate.

ILORIN: HISTORY, CULTURE, & LOCATION

ILORIN, the largest city and the official capital of Kwara State is said

to have derived its name from the Native word “Okuta Ilo Irin”,

meaning (Stone that sharpens metal). The stone which later became a

deified object of worship and sacrificial offerings, was said to have been used by one of the

founding fathers for sharpening his metal tools.

This fine city of Lawyers, is located in the North central part of Nigeria. Latitude

8.5oN and longitude 4.5oE. Hence, it is a confluence of many cultures as it is populated by the

Yoruba, Hausa, Fulani, Nupe, Baruba, other Nigerians and foreign nationals.

Many ceremonial activities, mostly with religious aspects take place in the city

throughout the year. Ilorin presents the visitors with friendly environment . The city is generally

called “ Home of Peace” hence, she hosts different religious practice and training institutions.

Pottery is big business in Ilorin. The city boasts of the biggest traditional pottery

workshops in Nigeria. Also thriving, is the traditional textile industry. In various parts of the city,

“Aso-Oke”, the wonderful textile and hand-woven simple looms are made in large quantities.

Aso-Oke is patronized by traders and fashion designers from Kwara State, other parts of Nigeria

and beyond. The cultural centre, houses the Kwara State Council for Arts and Culture, her

performing troupe, and a gallery with artistic objects and antiquities. Souvenirs of cultural and

historical values are also available.

TOURISMThe city also present a wide range of tourist attractions such as the imposing Sobi Hill

(said to have offered protection to natives during inter-tribal wars in ancient times), “ OKUTA ILO

IRIN” ( said to be the stone from which the name “ILORIN” was coined), The only purpose built

baseball park in Nigeria, Esie museum, Owu falls, Dada pottery, imoleboja rock shelter, and a host

of others.
