Hydraulic Ram Pump

SURVEY There is no way to give an average cost of a system, that

depends on too many factors. The best way to go is to

have a site surveyed and collect the data needed for a

sustainable ram pump system: flow of source, drop from

source to target ram, delivery height and distances. AIDFI

and the installation teams only charge a minimal fee for

the surveys:

actual survey

travelling time

actual travel cost, simple place to sleep and foods

technical study (covering expected output, itemized

list of materials and labor cost)

AIDFI stands for 100% implementation and Transparency

SELLING OF PUMPS Just recently AIDFI decided to also sell just units. This

after years of only doing complete installations to control

quality of the systems.

The flow rates for the different units:

¾” Ram Pump 10-15L/min

1” Ram Pump 15-30L/min

1 ½” Ram Pump 60-120L/min

2” Ram Pump 90-200L/min

3” Ram Pump 200-480L/min

4” Ram Pump 450-900L/min

5” Ram Pump 900-1300L/min

6” Ram Pump under testing

The individual units come with an installation manual.

PLAGIARISM Beware of imitations of the patented AIDFI ram model.

There have been several attempts to imitate the model by

individuals or groups who want to ride on the

success. Buy quality, buy experience, buy AIDFI Ram

Pump. AIDFI Ram Pump: World Class

Winner of numerous International Awards

WHAT IS A RAM PUMP? The ram is an automatic device which utilizes the energy

contained in free flowing water, meaning water pow-

ered and no electricity or fuel. A portion of the water

passing through the ram is pushed to high elevation.

The principle of the ram is conversion of velocity into

pressure.

ADVANTAGES OF THE RAM Pumps 24 hours per day automatically

Can pump to very high elevations

Doesn't consume fuel or electricity

Doesn't pollute (no CO2)

Spare parts locally available

AIDFI RAM DEVELOPMENT The ram is a very old technology which despite it being

unbelievable, never had the real chance to spread since

it had a wrong timing in history. During the Industrial

Revolution machines had to be big fast and energy con-

sumption didn't play a role.

Only the last 30 years there is renewed interest in the

technology caused by promotion and production of al-

ternative models and the high energy prices. Unfortu-

nately most of these models developed by Universities

and Appropriate Technology groups were inferior in

quality and their programs short-lived.

AIDFI has been in ram pumps continuously for over 20

years and perfected a model based on local available

parts and spare parts (door hinges).

AIDFI Hydraulic Ram Pump

Its model is a combination of the commercial and alternative

ram pumps available: high technical performance at low

cost. The pump itself is fabricated in a well equipped shop

but once it is in the field can be operated, maintained and

repaired by locally trained technicians. The main spare part

is a door hinge lasting from 3-12 months. The other spare

part is made of a piece of old car tire and functions as check

valve.

So far the highest delivery height of the AIDFI ram in the

field has been 200 meters.

SPREADING THE RAM The AIDFI ram pump has spread over the Philippines and so

far over 170 installations have been set up. To further

spread the technology AIDFI has trained installation teams in

Mindanao and Cebu. The success of the AIDFI ram lies not

only in the perfected technical side but also in its holistic

approach when it does installations: it involves the commu-

nities in all activities and if possible sets up a water associa-

tion, trains local technicians and plants trees as watershed

protection.

As said AIDFI has trained teams in Mindanao and Cebu and is

inviting interested parties to become such a team. As prov-

en by AIDFI the installations by the teams can be done on

self reliant basis. Interested people or groups should be

willing to work both on the technical as social aspects of

installations to make them truly sustainable.

CAPACITY OF AIDFI Has 20 years experience on the ram technology

Has a pool of very experienced ram technicians

Owns a well equipped shop for quality manufacturing

Test all pumps on a test tower

Has done installations in Japan, Cambodia and Af-

ghanistan

Sold units to: Malaysia, West Timor, Nepal, Peru, Cos-

ta Rica, France, Holland

Patented

CONDITIONS FOR AN IN STALLATION First of all the ram needs free flowing water (it can't run

on a shallow or deep well). It needs a minimum head/fall/

drop of 1 meter between source and ram. In some cases

where there is no immediate drop, this can be created by

a diversion (creating a drop over a certain distance).

The smallest ram pump can run on 15 liters/min. For eve-

ry meter drop the AIDFI ram can pump the water up till 30

-40 times. The higher it has to pump the less water is de-

livered. Water can be stored in low cost

ferrocement tanks.
