Derfner Foundation gift boosts theater benefit

Friends of the AHRC New York City Foundation enjoyed a performance of Hello, Dolly! starring Bette

Midler, while raising more than $93,000 for the Foundation.

Penny and Jay Lieberman, longtime members of the theater benefit committee, facilitated a $25,000 gift from The Derfner Foundation, of which Mr. Lieberman is a trustee.

The benefit extended over two nights and was preceded by a cocktail reception at Blue Fin on the first night. The Foundation’s 100 premium seats quickly sold out.

The show won four Tony Awards©, including Best Revival of a Musical and Best Actress for Ms. Midler. Reviewing the show in The New York Times, Ben Brantley called it “exceedingly bright and brassy,” adding, “…pretty much everything Ms. Midler does stops the show.”

The AHRC New York City Foundation thanks the theater benefit committee members, Mr. and Mrs. Lieberman; Kenneth D. Arbeeny, Esq.; Jill and Mark Hirsch; Heather and Michael N. Rosen; and Susan Williams. n

T he AHRC New York City Foundation has made a grant of $100,000 over two years to support

in part AHRC’s volunteer program. The program offers opportunities for AHRC participants to socialize and pursue interests in public settings.

For example, in partnership with Barnes & Noble and the New York Public Library, volunteers facilitate 14 book clubs that meet weekly in Manhattan, Brooklyn and the Bronx.

Volunteers from the Broadway theater community have assisted people in AHRC’s adult day services program in staging four shows at the Jerry Orbach Theater.

Numerous corporations – including, for example, JP MorganChase, Goldman Sachs and Bank of America – have hosted sessions where their employees conduct mock interviews to help AHRC trainees prepare for job searches. More than 1,000 job seekers have benefited.

To learn more about these and other volunteer opportunities, contact Karen Zuckerman, director of volunteer services and corporate engagement, at [email protected] or 212-895-3393. n

AHRC Foundation underwrites camp fire-alarm system

benefit raised more than $93,000 volunteers facilitate 14 book clubs that meet weekly

Two-year grant sustains AHRC volunteer program

T he AHRC New York City Foundation has made a $137,000 grant to replace the fire-alarm

system at AHRC’s Camp Anne with an up-to-date system that includes all buildings on the main campus.

The existing system extends to 15 of the 20 buildings, and it does not ring in a central location as the new one will. In addition, the existing system has begun to require costly repairs.

The new system will operate on fiber-optic cable so it will not be vulnerable to lightning strikes, which occur frequently in the Berkshire Mountains where the camp is located.

Because Camp Anne serves children and adults with significant disabilities, some of whom are non-ambulatory or have limited mobility, a state-of-the-art fire-alarm system is especially necessary. n
