The first Austin to arrive in America was Francis Austin who married Isabell Smith Bland. They lived at various times in Hampton and Dover, New Hampshire. On July 13, 1642 Francis died and was buried in the Meeting House Lot in Hampton. Their son, Joseph, married Sarah Starbuck.

Nantucket, New Hampshire. Notes: Joseph was born about 1630 and is said to have come from Hampton. The name appears in Dover in 1642 and 1648 and he was taxed in Dover, New Hampshire. He owned part of the mill property at Cochecho Falls having purchased of Richard Waldron a one-fourth part for “accommodation” of which he received the wood of three acres. Two of the other owners and operators were his father-in-law, Edmund Starbuck and William Furbush. In 1658, he exchanged with Elder William Wentworth “Emery’s Farm” for other land.. This town was also the home of Elder Edward Starbuck and Joseph married his daughter Sarah who was the widow of William Story who died in 1658. After the loss of Joseph, she married Humphrey Varney. Note: There is a theory, but no proof, that he was married previous to his marriage to Sarah Starbuck.

Their daughter, Melissa Jane, married Benjamin Craig and they were the parents of Chilena Craig.

7. William Furbush, (Was over 14 in 1701). There is a belief that our William Furbush had fought at the battle of Dunbar and taken prisoner. This William was sent to Boston and removed with the group separated for the Dover, New Hampshire area. He arrived on the “Unity” in early 1651 as a Scot prisoner. He did own a farm in Eliot, Maine on what is called Furbush Hill. One could realize the contempt our Scotsman and his wife had for the authorities by a few key incidents. He was in court in 1674 for getting Indians drunk and again in 1686 in Maine for the same offense. He was back in court in 1679 for abusing a constable and his wife Rebecca for strike the same. They were both back in court in 1683 for talking against the government. If our William is the prison of the Battle of Dunbar, it would be easy to understand his contempt for figures of authority.

In the historical data of John Sinclair, Immigrant of Exeter, New Hampshire, we learn that our John Bean (MacBayne) was one of the Scotsmen swept into war with England’s Oliver Cromwell during the 1600’s. A few years after the Dunbar battle, Cromwell attacked the Scotsmen again at Worcester, England. They were soundly defeated and many taken prisoner. About 300 were placed on the “John and Sarah” and brought by way of Barbados to Boston. One of those was our ancestor, John MacBayne. He never again saw his family in Scotland or his home land again. But, he was quite clever and established his home in Exeter, New Hampshire.

The families of Bean, Bain, and BEAN Bayne. as the name is variously spelled, are undoubtedly descended from the old Scotch clan Vean. The letters b and v in Gaelic are interchangeable, so that Vean and Bean are the same name differently spelled. The origin of the name is a matter of conjecture; by some it is claimed to be derived from the place of residence of the clan, "Beann" in Gaelic signifying mountain; but a better supported opinion is that it is derived from the fair complexion of the clan's progenitor, "bean," meaning white or fair, and often used by Highlanders to distinguish a man of fair complexion, as "olive," black or swarthy was used to designate one of dark complexion. The clan Vean, or, as it is oftener designated in Scotch history, "MacBean," was one of the tribes of the Chatli, or Clan Chattan, and occupied the Lochaber territory some time before the year 1300. Three distinct families of this blood came to America—the Bains settled in Virginia, the Banes in Maine, and the Beans in New Hampshire. In what year or on what ship the progenitor of the Beans reached these shores is not and probably never will be known. (I) John Bean, the immigrant ancestor, originally MacBean, or Bayne, was a Scotchman, said to be son of Donald MacBayne, and born in Scotland. There is reason to believe that he was one of the Scots taken prisoner by Cromwell at the battle of Worcester, or some of the other victories that he won over the Royalist and Scotch forces. Many thousands of these Scotch prisoners were sent over here and in time became proprietors and citizens in good standing with their English neighbors, and many other Scotch were drawn to New England to follow relatives who had been sent away. He first appears as the grantee of land in the town of Exeter, New Hampshire, in 1660. Other grants were made to him October 10, 1664, April 1, 1671, and February 21, 1708. John Fed, of Exeter, also conveyed to him, July 22, 1664, land in

Exeter, consisting of a house lot of twenty acres, and other lots in Exeter containing ten, five and twenty-six acres respectively. In 1671 he was one of a committee chosen to run the lines between Exeter and adjoining towns ; he took the oath of allegiance November 30, 1677; was pound keeper in 1680; and signed the famous New Hampshire petition of 1680-90. Tradition, in support of which there is much circumstantial evidence, says that his wife died on the passage, and that he married a girl who came over on the same vessel. The name of the first wife is not known. The name of the second, whom he married before 1661, was Margaret. Margaret Bean joined Hampton Church in 1671, and good wife Bean was among those who were dismissed from that church in 1618, "in order, to their being incorporated unto a church state in Exeter." Margaret Bean was one of those who organized the church in Exeter, September 2, 1698; she was a member in 1705, which was the last mention of her. She died before 1718. John Bean died between January 24, and February 8, 1717. He divided his property among his children before his death, and left no will. Elizabeth, born September 24, 1678. (II) John (2). fourth son of John (1) and Margaret Bean, was born in Exeter, October 13, 1668, and died in 1718. He is described in deeds as a carpenter. He signed the New Hampshire petition of 1690; witnessed Edward Gilman's will, June 2, 1690; was one of the witnesses to prove it, April 12, 1692; and also witnessed two instruments March 15, 1698. He had a grant of land from the town of sixty acres, March 28, 1698; his father conveyed to him, as before stated ; also Byley Dudley conveyed to him, May 10, 1700, twenty-five acres of land in Exeter. He made various conveyances of land and left a comfortable estate to his heirs. John Bean "stood on his guard" under orders from December 30, 1695, to January 20, 1696; was on a scouting party two days in 1710; was in Captain Gilman's company in 1710, and Captain James Davis's company in 1712. His wife's name was Sarah, and after his death she married a Robinson, of Exeter. Children : Dinah, Jeremiah, Sarah, William, Ebenezer, Joshua, subject of the next paragraph. (III) Joshua, youngest son of John (2) and Sarah Bean, was born about 1713, in Exeter, and lived there until 1780, when he removed to Gilmanton, where several of his sons had preceded him. and died in that town in 1787. Being a Quaker, he refused to sign the association test in 1776, as did his sons, Joshua, Simeon and Gideon. He married (first) Hannah, daughter of Thomas Robinson. She died in 1757, and he married (second) 1758, Lydia Brown, born about 1730, died January 21, 1823, in Weare, New Hampshire. The births of a portion of his children are recorded in Exeter, and others in Brent wood, but it is probable that they were all born upon the same homestead. Brentwood having been cut off from Exeter. They were : Hannah, Joshua, Simeon, Sarah, John, Mehitable, Lydia, Gideon, Deborah, Rachel, and one who died at birth. (IV) Gideon, fourth son of Joshua and Hannah (Robinson) Bean, was born March 21, 1752, in Brentwood, and settled in Gilmanton, where he died February 21, 1823. He married (first) January 28, 1777, Margaret Fernald (Cotton), widow of James Folsom. She was born October 16, 1743, died October I0, 1807. He married (second) May 4. 1809, a widow, Jane Tibbetts. She was born December 9, 1753, died November 22, 1837. The Gilmanton records, like those of most New Hampshire towns, are very incomplete. They record the birth of only two children of Gideon Bean by his first wife: Gideon and Benjamin, born in 1777 and 1780. There were probably several others. ( V) Henry, supposed to be a son of Gideon and Margaret F. (Cotton) (Folsom) Bean, was born about 1790, in Gilmanton, and state of preservation. For many generations, he and his descendants were of very high standing in the Society of Friends,

occupying the first of the high seats in the church, and having charge of the finances and investments of the community. Ebenezer Hussey was married, in 17.44, to Miriam Morrell. No record of their children can be found. (V) Ebenezer (2), son of Ebenezer (1) and Miriam (Morrell) Hussey, was born about 1745, in North Berwick, and resided there throughout his life, succeeding his father in a responsible position among the Quakers. (VI) Ebenezer (3), son of Ebenezer (2) Hussey, was born about the time of the revolution, in North Berwick, but the alarms of war had little effect on the child, as his ancestry and parents were a people opposed to war. He rose to high rank in the society, and occupied the head seat at their meetings. A man of good judgment, the investments of the society prospered under his charge. He owned a large farm on Pilgrim Hill at North Berwick, and was a useful and respected citizen. He married, in 1793, Mercy Austin. Children: Peletiah. Ebenezer, Andrew, George, Samuel F., Mercy and Thankful. The eldest succeeded his father as head of the Quaker organization. (VII) Samuel F., fifth son of Ebenezer (3) and Mercy (Austin) Hussey, was born in 1802, at North Berwick, and settled at Union. Maine, where he died at the early age of thirty-five years. He was educated in the town schools and at the high school in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. On settling at Union he bought an interest in a woolen mill in company with William Allen, and was the successful manager of its operation until his death in 1837. He adhered to the teachings of his ancestry, and was a member of the Society of Friends. He married, in 1831. Nancy T. Atwood, of Pittston, Maine, and had two children : Lucy Ellen and Erwin Albert. The daughter became the wife of Captain Abel Patten, and was lost at sea in the ship "Tommy Hussev," owned by her brother. (VIII) Captain Erwin Albert, only son of Samuel F. and Nancy (Atwood) Hussey, was born March 29, 1833, in Union, and was but four years old at the time of his father's death. At the age of twelve years he went to sea in the ship "Charlie Main," of Thomaston, Maine, a vessel of three hundred and twenty- five tons, and so large for the times that people came from all parts of the state to see her. At the age of twenty-one years. Captain Hussey was in command of one of the largest packet ships plying between New York and Liverpool, the "Escort," of the St. George line. Previous to this he had had a most adventurous experience. When eighteen years of age he served in the Indian Sepoy war, ranking as captain in the British East Indian navy and colonel of the army. He continued to follow the sea for nearly thirty years, and his last command was the steamship "Daniel Webster." In 1861 he retired from the sea and engaged in the banking business in New York City. For forty-four years he held membership in the New York Stock Exchange, and retired from active business in 1904. The firm of Hussey & Company, which he founded, is still in active business, headed by his son. In the year 1859. Captain Hussey was married to Harriet (Frances) Southard, of Richmond, Maine, and their only son, Thomas J., was born in 1860. The latter was married, in 1896, to Marion W. Haley, and has a daughter, Hattie Morse Hussey, born in 1898. The only daughter of Captain E. A. Hussey, Hattie Bishop, born 1862, in New York, died in that city in 1897. In 1887 she became the wife of Charles W. Morse, of Bath, Maine, and they had four children: Benjamin W., Erwin A., Harry B., and Anna E., all now living.

There is a dispute as to whether Alice Grantham, John Emery’s first wife, or Mary Shatswell, his second wife, is the mother of Ebenezer Emery. I believe that Mary Shatswell Webster Emery is her mother as in her Will Mary Shatswell Webster Emery states that “I give to my dafter Ebenezr the rest of my ewearing cloths…” Having worked in the legal area for many years and being well versed in history, it is inconceivable that her Will would have been honored if she mentioned a daughter that was not hers by birth. Even during my life time, in some states, in order for an adopted child, etc. to inherit without challenge, they had to be referenced as such in the Will.

Of the first citizens of Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts were the following progenitors of our family, Thomas Macy, Edward Starbuck, John Gardner, Richard Gardner, Thomas Daggett (Doggett) and Thomas Mayhew. The Macys and Starbucks originally were among the Puritans and, against the law, gave aid and comfort to Quakers. They left for the wilderness barely ahead of the law and their winter trip to Nantucket is documented in John Greenleaf Whittier’s “The Exiles” where Mr. Macy is mentioned by name. A copy of the poem is found in the accompanying volume.

His sons, Stephen and John, immigrated to New Hampshire early in the 17th century. Many of their descendants had serious problems with Indians n the late 1600’s and early 1700’s and were either attacked, captured or killed by them.

Richard Otis had one of the garrisons around Dover. On June 27, 1689, the dwelling house of Richard Otis, was attacked by the Indians, and himself shot as he was sitting up in bed, and his son Stephen and daughter Hannah were killed, the latter, then two years old, by dashing her head against the chamber stairs. The wife and infant child of three months, with others, twenty-nine n all, there carried captive to Canada and sold to the French. Mary Otis was also taken in the Abenaki Indian massacre in 1689. The Otis family began to follow the Society of Friends during the 1700’s.

Rose was captured by the Indians in the raid in 1696 and taken to Canada. She married in 1696 in Beauport, Canada and had 10 children. They were married for 33 years. She died when she was 52 years old.

In Boston, or its immediate surroundings, Rose Stoughton met and married, about 1649, Richard Otis, then a 24 year-old blacksmith, four years her senior, and with a promising future. He had been born in Glastonbury, England, and probably had not been very long in the American colonies. About 1655 Richard moved his small but growing family from Boston to Cocheco where his talents might be profitably employed in shoeing the hundreds of oxen needed in the then fast developing Piscataqua mast trade that right up to the American Revolution kept "His Majesty's ships" afloat and sailing on the high seas.

Notes: John Meader apparently came to New England about 1647. He would have been about 22 years old and was a Protestant, since he singed the Proclamation Return. His voyage to New England would have cost upwards of five pounds. (Abbott Emerson Smith, Colonists in Bondage, p. 35) and he might have had to borrow part of the sum and repay it with services in New England. His grant of land was on a beautiful peninsula between the Piscataqua and Oyster Rivers above Portsmouth, New Hampshire. The settlement had at least fifteen garrison houses grouped in the area before 1694. In the Indian attack of 1694 (The Oyster River Massacre), apparently a number of homes, including that of John Meader, were consumed by fire. If it was destroyed, it must have been immediately rebuilt for one soldier was quartered there from July 18, 1694 until November 24 and other soldiers were stationed there from November 2, 1695 until March 6, 1696.

Richard Nason’s will was dtd 14 July 1694 wherein Richard gave to Abigail (–) all of the of her first husband’s property, i.e., Nicholas(1) plus there were bequests to her Follett children. Abigail (–) Follett Nason was living in 1706.

Nicholas Follett (1) was a cooper and a mariner. He bought the house and land of Thomas Johnson on 06 September 1652. He was spoken of “as the nephew of William Follett” noted above. This statement in effect somewhat confirms that John Follett was the father of Nicholas(1) Follett and that John Follett and William Follett were brothers.

Notes: Thomas Gardner, called the Planter, the common ancestor of the Salem & Nantucket Gardners, was born in England in 1592 but where is not definitely known. He came to America in 1624 in the ship Charity and settled at Salem, Mass. In 1637 he was appointed to survey "all ffences west of the meeting house". In 1636 he was a member of the First Church. He was also engaged by the projectors of Cape Ann settlement to oversee the fisheries. By his first wife Margaret Frier he had nine children of whom two interest us; Richard and John. He married for his second wife Damaris Strattuck, a widow and Richard, son of Thomas married her daughter by her first husband, her name being Sarah. She was a Quaker and had considerable trouble with the authorities on account of her belief. Richard Gardner and his wife therefore decided to shake the Salem dust off their feet and repaired to more congenial surroundings. They married in 1652 and in 1666 the following resolution was passed at a meeting of the inhabitants of Nantucket: " A grant was made to Richard Gardner halfe accommodacons according to the grants made to Seamen and Tradesmen upon condition that hee exercise himselfe as a sea man & that hee come to inhabitt here with his ffamily before the end of May 1688 and after that his entrance here not to depart the Island in Point of dwelling for the space of three years upon forfeiture of the grant aforesaid."
