Each year the invaluable role that nurses play in keeping people across all communities healthy, is recognised on International Nurses Day. The celebration is held annually on the 12th of May, a date selected to coincide with the anniversary of the birth of Florence Nightingale, a symbol of pioneering nursing. This year at AAKPH our first

commemorations were focused on recognising the diversity of nursing roles and the difference nurses make to the lives of people. Our celebration provided an excellent opportunity to celebrate and acknowledge our dedicated nurses and the positive difference they make. The token gift to each carer was a personalised Fob watch, which highlighted, it is” time for caring” whilst maintaining “the bare below elbows “concept for maintaining infection control. The heart-warming moment of seeing my team lighting a candle and re-committing to the Nurses Pledge, sealed our team’s commitment to excellence in care. Our heartfelt acknowledgements to Mr. S. Suleiman (Director), Mr. A. Docrat (Hospital Manager), MANCO team and ABSA bank for partnering with us on this special day.

World Hand Hygiene Day plays an important role in highlighting good infection control prevention and control practices to change behaviours, to reduce, the spread of infections and therefore save the lives of millions. Without behaviour change, antibiotic resistance will remain a major threat to healthcare industry.

Hand hygiene is the most important factor in preventing the spread of healthcare associated infections (HAIs), a major threat to patient safety and the cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. We must seek to understand the importance of Hand washing before it can be understood.

M a y 2 0 1 7Q: How important are clean hands in patient safety?

A: Hand hygiene contributes significantly to keeping patients safe. It is simple, low-cost action to prevent the spread of many of the microbes that cause Healthcare Associated Infections (HAIs), compliance with it alone can dramatically enhance patient safety, because there is much scientific evidence showing the microbes causing HAI are most frequently spread between patients on the hands of the health care worker.

The quest to make a hospital an infection-free environment seems never-ending. That’s especially the case as new antibiotic-resistance bugs crop up and as STAPH and SEPSIS continue to risk patient lives. The responsibility for addressing these problems does not rest solely on the Infection Control Practitioner of course, but there are measures one should consider when implementing an highly functioning quality system of culture within the hospitals. Much of this insight codifies what infection control practitioner seeks to do daily and experts will agree that cementing institution wide success begins at the top. “ The leader sets the tone”
