Tubular Services – Coating

Tuboscope — Technical Leader in Tubular Coating and LinersTuboscope has been the worldwide leader in internal plastic coatings since inventing the internal tubular coating process over fifty years ago. We formulate and manufacture our coatings in our Houston Texas facility and ship to our 12 coating plants around the world. Our coatings are designed to help control and prevent corrosion and asphaltene, paraffin, and scale deposition. Tuboscope’s internal plastic coatings also increase hydraulic efficiency in tubing, line pipe and drill pipe.

A Highly Abrasion Resistant Drill Pipe Coating TK-34 was the first drill pipe coating and is still the industry standard. When our customers’ were asked how we could improve this coating, increased abrasion resistance was the common request. A comprehensive research and development program was undertaken to increase the abrasion resistance of TK-34 and while retaining its other properties that differentiate it from anything else on the market. That

development yielded TK-34XT, which boasts a Taber Abrasion (ASTM 4060-95) value 3X greater than that of TK-34, making it the most abrasion resistant coating in the world. This advancement has taken place without sacrificing any of the other properties like flexibility, chemical resistance or impact resistance. These changes have allowed TK-34XT to withstand fracing with over 2.2 million pounds of proppant without damage to the coating.Coating of Chrome Tubulars for Hydraulic EfficiencyA shift in the market has led many operators to use higher alloy tubulars such as 13 and 22-chrome. One system drawback is that the surface roughness of bare chrome tubulars (50 µ) is greater than that of bare carbon steel (35 µ). The use of Tuboscope internal plastic coating has been able to reduce the surface roughness to a nominal value of 4 µ. This reduction in surface roughness has translated into as much as a 25% increase in daily production and has allowed operators to pay for their coating application in a matter of days.

TK-Liner – Technology at its BestTuboscope’s TK-Liner system utilizes a fiberglass reinforced expoxy tube to protect against corrosion and mechanical damage. Unlike other systems the TK-Liner installation process uses a two-part epoxy that is extruded over the fiberglass tube as it is inserted into the tubing or line pipe. The two-part epoxy backing offers improved adhesion to the pipe surface as well as offering a secondary mode of protection in the event there is damage to the fiberglass tube. Additionally, the flange that is used to cap the ends of the pipe fits between the fiberglass tube and the pipe wall therefore not protruding into the tubing ID.Tuboscope Line Pipe Services –The Complete Line Pipe Coating and Connection SourceThe Thru-KoteTM UB sleeves and Insert Fittings utilize a patented insert sleeve designed to protect the internal coating during welding. It offers an economical and flexible method of field construction while eliminating expensive custom fabrication. The system accommodates all pipe sizes and grades. It is applicable to onshore/offshore pipelines as well as plant/municipal piping systems worldwide. Used in conjunction with the full line of Tuboscope Tube-KoteTM liquid and powder coatings the Thru-Kote system includes all of the connections covered: 90°, 45°, flanges, reducers, T’s, Telescoping connection, and varying combinations of the aforementioned.

Tubular Services – Coating

The fittings offer an economical and flexible method for field construction, tie-in’s, terminations, modifications, and repair of internally coated lines. The field applied, heat-cured mastic forms a smooth surface at the sleeve edge, which provides a continuous barrier. The use of the UB as a connector allows full penetration, 100% x-rayable welds to API 1104 and ASME 31.3, Chapter 9. Sleeves are internally coated producing a 100% coated and holiday free pipeline application. The Thru-Kote UB in conjunction with Tube-Kote coatings produces all the benefits of corrosion protection, increased hydraulic efficiency, and mitigated deposition of paraffin, asphaltene and scale.

Tuboscope offers a variety of Hardbanding materials for tool joint refurbishment, which reduces the wear to casing and protects tool joints.

Threads and Connections

Threads and Connections

Advanced Composite Thread (ACT)The Star premium molded threaded connection is manufactured with a special composite consisting of epoxy, graphite and ceramic. These materials, with a Teflon based lubricant and the consistent tolerances of ACT, provides exceptional sealability to high pressure fluids and gases with excellent make up and break out performance. The molded ACT connection provides higher thread shear and chemical resistance and is preferred over cut or ground fiberglass threads for downhole tubing. The ACT connection is manufactured with the industry standard API EUE 10rd, EUE 8rd and OD 8rd thread. The connection is primarily offered as integral joint but also is offered threaded and coupled for downhole tubulars.Precision Ground Thread (PGT)Produced with numerically controlled grinding equipment, the tolerances provided by PGT require only the use of a Teflon based lubricant for make up. This is an improvement over most typical cut or ground fiberglass threads which require the application of Teflon tape coated with Teflon base lubricant. The PGT connection is manufactured with industry standard API EUE 10RD, EUE 8RD and OD 8RD thread. PGT is used for line pipe products and is supplied with integral joint connections.

Brandt Gumbo Removal Equipment

Flowline to Disposal Solutions, Solids ControlBrandt Gumbo Removal Equipment

Brandt gumbo removal equipment is the first step in effective solids control for sticky clays and gumbo.Brandt’s Gumbo Box™ can process high volume of drilling fluid while removing gumbo and sticky clays that would blind off other scalping units. The optional integrated flow divider can feed up to eight shakers from one gumbo box, eliminating additional distribution equipment, and allowing for a compact installation. Single units may be easily bypassed when not needed. The motor driven chain provides thousands of operating hours with reliable, maintenance free service. The Gumbo Box comes in single and dual cartridge models that can be installed on almost any rig. The Gumbo Box may be fitted with Brandt’s gumbo chain, or with Brandt’s new fine screen scalper belt (modifications to existing gumbo boxes may be required). Both versions provide excellent removal of drill solids at the flowline. With a higher percentage of solids removed upstream, the downstream equipment operates more efficiently. This is critical to the solids control process, as it allows the shakers to operate properly.

Brandt LCM-2D™ and LCM-3D™ Shakers

Brandt LCM-2D™ and LCM-3D™ Shakers

The LCM-2D™ Cascade and LCM-3D™ Cascade screen shakers combine a CM-2 scalping shaker (top basket) with the fine screening ability of the LCM-2D or LCM-3D shaker (bottom basket) for maximum solids removal efficiency. The circular motion CM-2 has a 0° deck angle and 22.5 ft2 (2.1 m2) of screen area making it superior to other designs for separation of large and sticky solids. The linear motion LCM-2D and 3D bottom basket angle is adjustable. The Contour Plus™ LCM-2D screen deck uses three Red Diamond™ Ultra-Flow LCM-2D™ hookstrip style screens, while the LCM-3D uses four Red Diamond™ Ultra-Flow Cobra™ or BHX™ rigid frame pretensioned screens. With both designs, the feed end screen is set at 0°; the other screens are inclined at +5°. This design reduces the depth of the liquid pool to improve solids conveyance and reduce re-grinding of solids while maintaining good flow properties.Fluid loss is minimized and cuttings dryness is enhanced with Brandt’s patented drying deck and our new flow direction tray. The drying deck also saves space by reducing the overall footprint.LCM-2D and LCM-3D shakers use a reliable, low-maintenance drive system for years of dependable, trouble-free operation.

Brandt VSM 300™ Shaker

Brandt VSM 300™ Shaker

VSM-300

The VSM 300™ is the world’s first balanced elliptical motion, low profile, cascade shaker. The VSM 300 delivers dramatic increases in throughput capacity through unique vibratory motion and screen deck layouts. The VSM 300 is the ultimate shaker for all drilling applications! The VSM 300’s unique drive motion delivers significant improvements in the transportation of sticky hydrated clays - often encountered when drilling top hole sections with water based fluids. The use of integral secondary drying technology, demonstrates Brandt’s commitment to delivering cost effective, environmentally responsible solutions to the oil industry. The VSM 300 is an extremely simple machine to operate - maintenance is minimal and screen changing is carried out in 2-3 minutes by ONE operator.

The VSM 300 uses genuine Brandt Red Diamond™ Ultra-Flow 300™ screens. These screens provide exceptional capacity and unsurpassed life. Red Diamond Ultra-Flow screens are pretensioned and are clamped into the unit using Pneumoseal™ air inflatable clamping system.Supplied with a highly efficient integral scalping deck, deployment of the VSM 300 reduces the need for upstream scalping shakers - thereby removing the cost and weight burden.Significant benefits are also derived from incorporation of a novel 7º ‘Through Ramp’ on the lower (primary) deck where, under the effects of the balanced elliptical drive system, solids conveyance is clearly years ahead - even when reactive formations are encountered. The VSM 300 employs ‘Integral Drying Modules’ whereby appreciable savings in fluids can be achieved by drying the solids on the shaker itself - without the need for expensive secondary ‘High G’ drying equipment. The reduction in fluid discharge delivers immediate cost and environmental benefits. With due consideration to HSE requirements, the VSM 300 has been designed for minimal user intervention - thereby reducing time spent in the shaker area.Supplied in modular form, the VSM 300 can be assembled on site to produce multiple units thereby reducing installation time and costs. Brandt’s proven shallow header tank system is

Brandt Automated Shaker Control

Brandt Automated Shaker Control

Brandt is the first company that can automatically adjust shale shakers to changing drilling conditions. ASC (Automated Shaker Control) is designed to optimize shale shaker operating efficiency and to remove personnel from the shaker house environment. The system monitors fluid levels within the header tank and each shale shaker. Using these levels, the system automatically controls the mudflow to each shaker and brings on or off line the optimum number of shakers for the volume of drilling mud being processed. The main advantages gained when utilizing the ASC are that

■ expensive whole mud losses over the shaker screens are prevented

■ screen life is maximized■ personnel exposure to the hazardous

environment within the shaker house is minimized

■ rig personnel are alerted regarding screen failures thus minimizing solids re-entering the drilling mud

The shaker house can be an unpleasant working environment and can foster an aversion to continuously adjusting the shale shakers. ASC makes these adjustments automatically, relieving operators from the tasks of manual monitoring and making adjustments when flow rates, viscosity, or the solids content of the drilling fluid changes. By continuously optimizing shaker performance, efficient solids control is assured.

Audible and visual alarms notify personnel of the need for shaker attention. The operator can easily isolate a shaker for minor maintenance or screen changing.

Screen displays in the shaker room can be networked to other terminals on the rig. An optional system offers remote/manual control utilizing the hydraulic control station and hydraulically actuated feed chutes. ASC compliments the VSM 300 shale shakers and is applicable to both floating and fixed installations. ASC can enhance solids control efficiency and rig economics. ASC can detect screen failures or screen plugging by monitoring the change in process capacity of each shaker. Timely screen cleaning reduces liquid losses, while prompt screen replacement minimizes contamination of the drilling fluid. Rig personnel are freed from tedious shaker monitoring and can now spend their time on more productive tasks.

ASC FunctionalityWhen Flow Rate Or Viscosity Increases

■ More shakers are brought on line.■ If all shakers are running, the G-force is

boosted. ■ If more throughput is still required, the beach

length is reduced, preventing mud loss from the shakers.

When Flow Rate Or Viscosity Decreases■ The number of operating shakers should be

decreased accordingly such that the fluid level is maintained at its optimum within each shaker.

■ This will enable either finer screens to be fitted thus improving solids control and reducing drilling fluid dilution or the screens within the non-running shakers need not be compromised.

■ Excessively long beach lengths are avoided, diminishing the negative effects of non-wetted screen surfaces.

Brandt Red Diamond™ Screens

Brandt Red Diamond™ Screens

Red Diamond Ultra-Flow screens are pretensioned screens that eliminate the leading causes of screen installation problems—improper tensioning and screen panel flex. Red Diamond Ultra-Flow screens are made exclusively for Brandt shakers and are so innovative that they are patented. Reduced operating costs are achieved through longer screen life and extra performance with the Red Diamond Ultra-Flow screen. Ultra-Flow screens have heavy-duty steel frames that resist flexing and maintain harmonic motion with the shaker deck. Red Diamond bonding agents assure complete encapsulation of the screen media to the panel. This distinctively red, chemical-resistant finish inhibits corrosion and extends the usable life of the panel even in the most demanding drilling conditions.

Red Diamond™ Ultra-Flow BHX™

Red Diamond Ultra-Flow screens are available as:

■ Ultra-Flow BHX™ premium life screens to fit Cobra family, LCM-3D and ATL shakers

■ Ultra-Flow Cobra™ high capacity screens to fit Cobra family and LCM-3D shakers

■ Ultra-Flow 100™ screens to fit VSM 100 and LPC-40 shakers

■ Ultra-Flow 300™ screens to fit VSM 300 shakers

■ Ultra-Flow LCM-2D™ to fit LCM-2D and LCM-2D CS shakers. These are hookstrip type screens that do not have a rigid frame.

Red Diamond Ultra-Flow screens are available in all popular meshes and configurations, including:

■ MG (Market Grade); a durable single layer of cloth, typically used for scalping operations

■ TBC (Tensile Bolting Cloth); a more conductive cloth than MG that may have one or more layers of sizing wire and one coarse mesh backing layer for support

■ XF (Extra Fine); with even more conductance, usually supplied in a triple layer configuration with two fine mesh sizing layers and one coarse mesh backing layer for support

■ HP (High Profile); that uses one or more layers of rectangular opening cloth for sizing and one coarse mesh backing layer for support

■ RHD (Rectangular Heavy Duty); new patented design which use two layers of sturdy rectangular cloth for sizing and one coarse mesh backing layer for support™

Brandt Hydrocyclones

All Brandt 12-inch (533 mm) and 4-inch (102 mm) hydrocyclones (commonly known as desanders and desilters) effectively remove drilled solids that shaker screens may not. They are made from a durable polymeric material developed exclusively for Brandt. These hydrocyclones offer high-temperature tolerance, greater resistance to erosion, and low-cost replacement. They also have preferred flange connections for tight, leakproof assembly.Involute feed entry-rather than conventional tangential entry-is another advantage of Brandt hydrocyclones. This design separates the solids more efficiently, saves valuable fluid, and reduces wear at the feed inlet. Usable life is extended with a wear-resistant ceramic insert that is molded into the apex of the hydrocyclone, traditionally the highest wear area. This ceramic material resists abrasion many times over standard polymeric material. All 12-inch and 4-inch cones are mounted on rugged skids with a lifting eye to facilitate handling. The number of hydrocyclone cones should be selected to process approximately 110 - 125% of the maximum circulating rates

expected in top hole drilling. This will ensure treatment of 100% of the circulating volume containing formation contaminants.

SR-2 (Top) and SE-20 (Left)

Equal importance should be given to selecting a suitable centrifugal pump and prime mover (engine or electric motor) that will deliver the required flow rate and feet of head/pressure to the feed manifold.

Brandt Cobra™ Mud Conditioners

Brandt Cobra™ Mud Conditioners

The popular Cobra and King Cobra shakers are also available as mud conditioners. All Cobra style shakers and mud conditioners share the same simple design and rugged parts. Brandt hydrocyclones separate detrimental drilled solids from drilling fluids that shakers may not remove. Brandt mud conditioners save valuable fluid by drying the hydrocyclone underflow with fine mesh screens and efficient linear motion. When a dry discharge is not needed, the hydrocyclone underflow may be diverted away from the screens by simply changing valve arrangements. Cobra and King Cobra mud conditioners are ideal for “closed-loop” operations or whenever excessive liquid loss from hydrocyclone underflows must be avoided.

Brandt LCM-2D™ and LCM-3D™ Mud Conditioners

LCM-2D™ and LCM-3D™ mud conditioners combine Brandt hydrocyclones with innovative vibratory basket designs like a patented drying deck for high process rates and fine separations. This design reduces the depth of the liquid pool to improve solids conveyance and reduce re-grinding of solids while maintaining good flow properties.Brandt hydrocyclones feature wear-resistant ceramic at the apex. Brandt hydrocyclones extract detrimental drilled solids that shakers may not remove. LCM-2D and LCM-3D mud conditioners save valuable fluid by drying the hydrocyclone underflow with efficient linear

motion. When a dry discharge is not needed, the hydrocyclone underflow may be diverted away from the screens by simply changing valve arrangements. Fluid loss is minimized and cuttings dryness is enhanced with Brandt’s patented drying deck. The drying deck also saves space by reducing the overall footprint.

Brandt Centrifuge HS-3400™

Brandt Centrifuge HS-3400™

Brandt’s HS-3400™ centrifuge offers excellent performance over a wide range of applications under various conditions. On all models, adjustments to the dam plates change liquid pond depths. Typically, deeper ponds are used with high solids content fluid, while shallow ponds are used for maximum dryness. The rotating assembly is manufactured from stainless steel; areas of potential wear on the scroll are fully protected with durable tungsten carbide. HS-3400 centrifuges come in several configurations.

Standard electric motor driven designs are fitted with a 52:1 ratio two-stage, planetary gearbox. Differential drive is transmitted to the conveyor via a splined output shaft in same direction of rotation as the bowl with a ratio of 51 turns of conveyor to 52 turns of bowl. Gearbox reaction torque is transmitted via sun gear shaft protruding from the outer end gearbox to a torque control assembly mounted on the centrifuge frame. Torque overload protection is provided by a simple mechanical trip mechanism. The trip device interrupts current to the main drive motor, which in turn causes the feed pump to stop simultaneously. The trip device is easily reset and requires no shear pins or other replaceable items. The all stainless steel rotating assembly is enclosed within a baffled casing with hinged lid, all fitted onto a main frame. The main frame supports both the main bearings and casing assembly that in turn is bolted to a sub frame with vibration protective shock mounts. Accurate machining of bearing locations ensures that rotating assemblies can be interchanged without any need for shimming or any other adjustments.

VSD (Variable Speed Drive) models use a variable speed hydraulic motor. The Brandt HS-3400 VSD™ Centrifuge will give infinite speed control from 1500 RPM to 4000 RPM, (1500 RPM minimum speed must be achieved before the feed pump will start). A fixed displacement axial piston motor is used to drive the centrifuge via V-belt drive. Hydraulic power is provided (via a closed loop hydraulic circuit) by a variable displacement axial piston pump with swash plate controlled by a manual adjustment. The pump is also fitted with an override system to prevent motor stall and to provide ‘soft start’ of centrifuge without using a fluid coupling.FVSD (Fully Variable Speed) model features a variable speed hydraulic main drive and variable speed hydraulic back drive to adjust scroll (differential) speeds independently. The field-proven back drive can automatically compensate for changes in torque that arise from increased solids density or increased solids content.

Brandt Centrifuge HS-2172™

Brandt Centrifuge HS-2172™

The patent pending rotating assembly of the HS-2172™ is truly innovative and exclusively only from Brandt. Machine efficiency is unsurpassed. This all-electric machine features:

■ A large capacity 21-inch x 72-inch (533 mm x 1829 mm) bowl size with patent pending scroll design for unmatched capacity (over 500 GPM @ 9 ppg [1893 LPM @ 1078 kg/m³])

■ Extremely high-torque gearbox for unrivaled solids removal

■ Three levels of control from manual to fully automated, self-monitoring which continuously optimizes performance

■ Superior capacity and efficiency over a wide range of operating conditions

The scroll design of the HS-2172 enhances the separation and removal of solids from liquids. All efforts have been made to completely accelerate the fluid as it enters the bowl, then provide a nearly laminar flow path for the effluent. A combination of our unique patent-pending features is the reason the HS-2172 is the ultimate decanting oilfield centrifuge.

■ The feed accelerator uses a conical distributor and a spiral impeller that instantaneously accelerates the slurry from 0 RPM to bowl speed. This normalizes the solids to the high-G environment. Spreading the feed over a wide area reduces the potential to disturb the exiting solids.

■ The Quasi-axial flow and open hub design of the scroll induces a near-laminar flow condition within the liquid pool. Liquid freely travels to the overflow weir with little or no turbulence.

■ Three PSD (pool surface diverters) interrupt the slurry path and force fine solids to be conveyed out of the machine.

In addition to the unique mechanical features of the HS-2172, it also comes with the industry’s most diverse suite of control packages. Three levels of functionality are offered to suit any need:The Standard (industrial) level model uses a single manually adjustable VFD (Variable Frequency Drive) to vary the main drive speedThe Smart (intermediate) model uses manually adjustable VFD’s to change main drive, back drive and pump speeds. A PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) insures that proper power-up and power-down sequences are followed and protects the centrifuge from over-torque, excessive vibration, and critical bearing temperatures. Local operation or remote e-drill™ connectivity is possible.HAL (Hands-free Advanced Logic) includes all of the benefits of the Smart model but also includes a self-optimizing PLC controller and software that monitors and adjusts all critical functions automatically without the need for operator intervention.

Brandt Agitators

Brandt Agitators

The low profile of Brandt horizontal agitators reduces headroom requirements. They come in two styles. Brandt’s original MA™ series with 30:1 single reduction worm-gear drive that uses a sliding action worm and gear. Available in 3 to 30 hp. Brandt’s new MA-RG™ (Right Angle Gear) double reduction, helical gear style is designed primarily for applications requiring more than 15 hp. In some instances horsepower requirements are reduced due to the 95% efficiency of the helical gearing. The 1:1 ratio of height-to-width of both designs results in a low center of gravity, providing stability and safety.Brandt also supplies vertically mounted agitators where the motor is mounted in line with the gear reducer and output shaft. The explosion-proof, C-face motor bolts on and couples to the double reduction helical

gearbox. The entire assembly bolts to a fabricated steel base plate, which is mounted on the mud pit. Vertically mounted agitators are lighter than right angle drive horizontal units, but produce the same mixing results.

Manufactured of solid milled steel, the agitator shaft is coupled to the gear reduction assembly with a rigid coupling. All shafts are keyed at the bottom for adjustment of impeller height. A bottom end stabilizer is supplied when tank depths exceed 6 feet (1.83 m). The stabilizer reduces side loading and protects the agitator when auxiliary equipment is carried inside the mud tanks during rig moves. Both 60-degree canted and contour blades produce axial flow and are available for any Brandt agitator. As with all agitator applications, consult Brandt for proper sizing and application.

Brandt Agitators

Brandt agitators are available with three types of impellers and are sized according to tank volume and expected duty. Active mud system compartments (such as solids removal sections, mud mixing sections and slug pits) need a higher shear blade to produce more immediate mixing. Bulk storage compartments need a low-shear blade that maintains suspension in a gentler manner. For active mud system compartments less than 5 ft (1.52 m) in height, a flat blade impeller can be used to induce radial flow patterns in the mud. When compartment height is greater than 5 ft (1.52 m), either a 60-degree canted impeller, or a high volume contour blade is used to promote axial as well as radial flow. For tanks deeper than 12 ft (3.66 m) , two or more impeller blades may be used in combination.

For bulk storage tanks, high-efficiency, contour impellers are best. This variable

Axial flow Radial flow

pitch impeller reduces horsepower requirements and induces less shear to the mud.Brandt agitators are sized according to the duty. Proper sizing is determined by calculating the Turn Over Rate (TOR) for each agitated compartment. TOR is the time required, in seconds, to completely move the fluid in a mud tank. For 60-degree canted blade applications TOR should be between 40 and 90 seconds. As the TOR approaches 40, the chance for air entrainment increases. At TOR greater than 90, proper suspension may be jeopardized and solids will begin to settle. For contour blade applications, TOR must be significantly faster to achieve the same results, but because of the 100% axial flow, air entrainment is not a problem.

■ Automated handling of all types of sacks up to 110 lb (50 kg)

■ Discharge rates 6 to 7 sacks/min 331 lb/min, (150 kg/min)

■ Manual, remote or automatic dischargecontrol options

■ Integral dust extraction/reclamation system

■ Options for safe or classified area■ Closed loop dust extraction system

Emptied sacks are compacted and discharged into a collection tube. A high efficiency dust extraction system is fitted to ensure dust free operationWhile manually mixing chemicals, operators are exposed to high levels of chemical dust for extended periods attempting to achieve correct chemical addition rates.Use of an automated chemical discharge system reduces operator dust exposure to minute levels and gives greater control of additive consumption and fluid properties thus reducing costs.

Big Bag HandlingBrandt’s big bag handling system allows accurate addition of chemicals without manual handling or exposure to potentially hazardous substances. Features include:

■ Rugged skid mounted equipment to allow controlled discharge of chemical “Big Bags”.

■ Automated or manual control■ Automatic loss-in-weight discharge

control■ Accurate control over rates of addition■ Local or remote/automated control■ Totally enclosed dust free operation■ Handles all single or multi-trip “Big Bags”■ Options for safe or classified areas

The ability to open and close the container allows partial discharges to be achieved. The big bag, when empty, is ‘low volume’ to store, easily transported when empty and may be filled at source or at the mud company supply point. The aim is to reduce liability for high cost labor at the rig site. Flow from the big bag is induced by a combination of vibration and massaging of the bag.

Brandt Degassers and Auxiliary Equipment

Brandt Degassers and Auxiliary Equipment

Brandt DG-5™ and DG-10™ degassers incorporate more leaf area than other degassers. This expansive multiple-leaf surface area spreads the gas-cut mud so that entrained gas bubbles are brought to the surface. The gas collects at the top of the chamber and exits the vessel with the aid of a vacuum pump. The degassed mud is drawn from the bottom of the vessel through a high efficiency eductor. Unlike conventional units, which are available in only one size, the Brandt degasser is available in two sizes - the DG-5 for flow rates up to 500 GPM and the DG-10 for flow rates up to 1000 GPM (3785 LPM).

The VG-1™ Degasser processes up to 1000 GPM (3785 LPM) of 50% gas-cut mud in a single unit. The low-profile, horizontal design stands only 60 in (1524 mm) high, allowing the VG-1 Degasser to fit in locations where headroom is limited. The VG-1 degasser is designed as a single-lift unit. The vacuum vessel, pump, and pump piping are mounted on a single oilfield-style skid and equipped with lifting eye hoist points. The unit easily fits into position. Suction and discharge piping is simple to complete.

The multi-purpose Enviro Vac™ vacuum pump offers superior performance in a unitized package. This space saving design incorporates the vacuum pump, collection vessel (with safety float switch) and filter vessel. The system can be installed to perform clean-up duties by routing pick up lines to specified areas on the rig floor, mud room or wherever liquid or slurry spills might occur. The Enviro Vac is able to operate automatically or manually simply and effectively. Once a power supply is installed, and piping or hoses are routed to the desired pick-up points, the Enviro Vac is ready for duty.

Brandt developed these quiet, efficient blowers to improve comfort and safety on drilling rigs. Fully OSHA-compliant, these blowers help disperse potentially dangerous gasses and bothersome insects. Three models — from 15,000 cfm to 40,000 cfm (424.5 m3/min – 1320 m3/min) — are available in floor or hanger-mounted units. All feature non-sparking blades, explosion-proof electrics, and safety guards.

Brandt Transfer System™

Flowline to Disposal Solutions, Waste ManagementBrandt Transfer System™

A concern of any waste management program is the movement of drilling wastes from point-to-point on location, or transfer offsite. Logistics, environmental laws and budget will influence what is practical and effective. The BTS™ (Brandt Transfer System) is a patented pump and collection system designed to pump drilling wastes and heavy sludge. Key features of the system include: ™

■ A variable speed hydraulically driven submersible centrifugal pump with suction-assisted open impeller housing.

■ An integral bypass gate allows partial or total re-circulation of the slurry without the need for extra pipe construction.

■ The pump can be supplied as a stand-alone device suitable for attachment to a “boom” apparatus, or more typically is installed on a V-bottomed tank with a traversing rack and pinion system.

■ Variable speed, reversible, rotating cutter heads help break up sedimentation that can accumulate in tanks.

■ This entire pump assembly also pivots from the top of the rack and pinion system to help dislodge stubborn sediment & compacted solids.

Some typical uses for the system are to fill open top dump trucks, vacuum trucks, transfer sludge to collection barges, evacuate barges, and feed cuttings to centrifugal dryers. The pump features a unique intake assist head and hydraulic drive motor that can move sludge or liquid with ease . The variable speed hydraulic motor allows flexibility when conditions change.

Dependable, safe and rugged, the system features its own hydraulic power source. Environmentally safe fluid and high pressure hoses ensure compliance with HSE requirements.Transfer times are minimized, reducing turn-around time and accrued haulage costs. The system integrates well with other waste management technologies: Cuttings Injection, Closed Loops, Pit Closure, Bio-treatment and others.

Brandt Cuttings Injection

Brandt Cuttings Injection

CRI™ (Cuttings Reinjection) results in zero discharge to the environment. The CRI process is permanent, safe, and dependable. In fact, Brandt has safely injected over 10 million barrels (1,589,873 m3) of waste material. Each Brandt injection system fully complies with “zero discharge” requirements with proven licensed technology. Brandt can supply a CRI system that will process up to 25 tons ( 22,680 kg) per hour and inject up to 300 barrels per hour (48 m3). Custom units have successfully processed over 200 ft/hr (61 m/hr) of 16-in (406 mm) hole, thus assuring continuous drilling uptime. The Brandt slurrification system is designed to receive the drilled cuttings from the rig’s solids control equipment and other drilling waste management sources. Cuttings are transported to the slurrification package via gravity feed or other means of transportation, where they are mixed with water (and chemicals if required). With a combination of mix-tank agitators and grinding pumps, the cuttings are made into a pumpable slurry of known particle size for transfer to batch-holding tanks or directly to the variable-speed injection pump. A predetermined rate and pressure are established prior to injecting the cuttings via the casing annulus into the injection zone.

We believe that the better a process can be measured, the better it can be managed, and the more efficient it will be.

That’s why most of our systems can be controlled and monitored automatically from remote control rooms. This removes personnel from harsh environments and minimizes their exposure. Health, safety and environmental issues are minimized and efficiency is increased. Brandt offers systems with automated controls and data logging that free operators from manual task , measure processes and can even optimize the system to specific design parameters. Custom-engineered systems are available to meet your particular process needs and space requirements. Brandt can supply qualified, trained personnel for all phases of project management, including system operation, data gathering and analysis, process optimization, and project reviews.

Brandt Vortex™ Centrifugal Dryer

Brandt Vortex™ Centrifugal Dryer

The Vortex Dryer™ is designed to reduce and recover base fluid from a variety of feed slurries. In drilling operations, the Vortex Dryer has proven to reduce this liquid to less than 3%, by weight. Its high capacity design is well-suited for virtually all drilling conditions. There are no vibrating screens or other consumables, so the Vortex is extremely cost-effective. The recovered liquid is typically processed with a decanting centrifuge for additional polishing prior to return to the active system.

Solids from the rig solids control equipment are routed to the Vortex Dryer via conveyor, vacuum transfer system, or other means. An optional Conditioning Tank can be used to optimize blending of feed solids. Solids enter the Vortex Dryer through the top feed inlet and are separated inside the Dryer. The clean solids exit the bottom of the Dryer and are discarded overboard or collected in boxes (not shown) for offsite transport and disposal. The recovered liquid is routed to a liquid collection tank. The recovered liquid is then processed through a decanting centrifuge for final clarification, storage, and reuse.

Brandt THOR™ Thermal Desorption

Brandt THOR™ Thermal Desorption

The patented Brandt THOR™ (Thermal Oil Recovery) System is the premier indirect thermal system designed specifically for drilled cuttings. The THOR System applies heat to drilled cuttings until the soil temperature is above the vaporization temperature of the oil. The vapor is then condensed and recovered. The THOR System is best-suited for processing materials with hydrocarbon content greater than 5% by volume, such as drilled cuttings. In fact, it has successfully treated materials with over 35% oil content. High feed rates can be maintained and there is no need to add dilution soil to the feedstock. THOR uses a high temperature stainless steel dryer for efficient heat transfer and vaporization, allowing recovery of diesel, mineral oil or synthetic based fluids. The recovered hydrocarbons may be recycled as fuel, base fluid for oil-base mud, or added to a process stream for resale.

Custom models are available to process cuttings at rates from 1 TPH (Ton Per Hour) to 15 TPH this equates to between 3 to 48 barrels (0.5 m3 - 7.6 m3) in typical applications. The modular design of THOR systems make them suitable for remote locations. Each THOR system comes complete with indirect thermal chamber, process controls, and vapor recovery system.

Main components of THOR■ A FEED SYSTEM with a rugged pre-screen

removes 3-inch (76 mm) and larger solids. A dual gearbox feed delivery conveyor meters drilled cuttings from the feed hopper to the dryer.

■ THE HIGH TEMPERATURE FURNACE heats the rotary dryer to the desired temperature. The firebox is built to withstand 2400° F (1316° C) and contains

access panels, a removable top, and view ports to check flame trajectory.

■ Strategically placed thermocouples monitor firebox, stack and drum skin temperatures. Triple layered, high temperature stainless steel seals are used to seal each end of the dryer.

■ SOLIDS DISCHARGE AND HYDRATION: The processed cuttings exit the dryer into a dual shafted pug mill, which re-hydrates them with recovered process water.

■ VAPOR STREAM DUST REMOVAL is accomplished at the core separator, which settles most of the fine solids with cyclonic force before condensation takes place.

■ THE QUENCH TANK renders the steam into a saturated vapor. Any remaining solids are removed thus providing caking protection for the condenser.

■ THE WEIR TANK AND OIL/WATER SEPARATOR-COALESCER separates the oil and water, and ensures water quality is suitable for use for rehydration within the system.

■ THE COOLING SYSTEM consists of a closed loop water cooling tower and stainless steel shell and tube condensor. This cools and condenses the vapor stream into liquid phases.

■ A THERMAL OXIDATION system destroys non-condensable vapors and converts carbon monoxide to carbon dioxide. Two induced draft fans move vapors and gasses through the THOR system and into the oxidizer.

■ THE CONTROL SYSTEM is able to operate in either manual or automatic mode. A centralized control room contains the necessary electrical switchgear, displays, PLCs and remote start/stop controls. A Data Logging System is provided to maintain records of the operation.

Brandt System Services

Brandt System Services

Brandt Dewatering Services perform two vital functions. First, dewatering can remove up to 99.5% of solids from unweighted drilling fluids, returning essentially clear water. This is important to reduce hydrostatic fluid column pressures and increase rate of penetration. Second, dewatering significantly reduces waste volume for offsite removal and disposal. A typical Brandt Dewatering System includes one or more decanting centrifuges, polymer aging and injection system, and pH adjustment. Solids, in the form of a dry cake, fall into a catch tank for storage, testing, and handling prior to disposal. The clean liquid phase is either returned to the mixing tank or sent to a holding tank for preparation for discharge.
