    Concept to CommercializationConcept to Commercialization

  • FRESH GINGER PROCESSING TECHNOLOGY IN NORTH EAST

    • NIIST have set up commercial ventures in North East states of Manipur, Meghalaya, Sikkim for processing of Ginger, Turmeric and Green Cardamom

    • Technology transfered to Mizoram & Arunachal Pradesh to set up commercial units

    • Ensured remunerative return to the rural farmers

A New Venture to cater 7.5 TPD ginger is under implementation at Wayanad, Kerala

  • Current status

    Pre Commissioning trials over

  • TURN KEY EXECUTION FRESH CHILLI PROCESSING UNIT AT BYADAGI

    • First venture in India for Processing of 20 TPD of Fresh Chillies making High Colour value added product free of Aflatoxins

    • Continuous processing which can cater chilli right from harvest even during adverse conditions

    • Employment for 20 rural unskilled women and Remunerative prices for farmers

Science & Technology to the rescue of the Chilli farmer

  • Concept to commercialization

  • Refrigeration/Adsorption dehumidified drier

Problem  Drying during the rainy harvesting

season  Very long residence time for drying  Development of surface cracks on

dried products  Loss of essential oils  Oozing out of essential oils on

    dried product

Result  Operate at lower temperature and

shorter drying time  Higher mass transfer rate  Improved product quality  Catapulted one entrepreneur as

the largest exporter of Nutmeg from India

Solution Energy efficient refrigeration/adsorption dehumidified drier designed and commissioned Capacity: 2T/day

  • Processing of Nutmeg prior to 2011: (Counter Clockwise from Top): 1. Sun Drying of Nutmeg; 2. Firing of Hot Air Generator 3. Mat over which Nutmeg is spread for drying; 4. Drying in Progress

  • Processing of Nutmeg under New System: (Clockwise from Top): 1. Nutmeg readied to be loaded into Drier; 2. Nutmeg being stacked in the Insulated Drier Room; 3. The RADD System

  • Aflatoxin free products for Exports to New Markets: Europe and USA

Manual sorting to remove un-dried nutmeg; 2. Firing of the Hot Air Generator

Modernized Unit has vastly improved the Quality of Work and Life of Workers
