    The Co-operative Credit Societies Act, 1904

    was passed by the Government of India and

    rural credit societies were formed.

    Co-operative Societies Act was passed by

    Government of India in 1912. This Act

    recognized non-credit societies also.

    Began in the 19th cent. in Great Britain.

    In India it started in 1904 with Co-operative CreditSocieties Act.

    The Indian Co-operative Movement is the largest inthe world.

    In India there are 5.5 lakhs of cooperative Societieswith membership of more than 22crores.

    Co-operatives have covered 100% of villages and 67%

    of rural households. Contributes 50% of total agricultural credit and

    distributes 35% of total fertilizer consumption in thecountry and buying 67% of total sugarcane in India.

    To organise, promote and develop marketing,processing and storage of agricultural, horticulturaland forest produce.

    Distribution of agricultural machinery, implementsand other inputs.

    Undertake inter-State, import and export trade,wholesale or retail .

    To act and assist for technical advice in agriculturalproduction for the promotion and the working of itsmembers and cooperative marketing, processing andsupply societies in India.

    Co-operative Farming Societies

    Under this system, all landowners in a village

    form a co-operative society for tilling the

    land.

    The land is pooled, but each farmer retains

    the right of property.

    The produce is distributed by each.

    They are allowed to withdraw from the co-

    operative farm whenever they desire.

    Challenges before co-operatives

    Lack of internal resources and poor mobilization ofexternal resources.

    Inadequate infrastructure.

    Apathy of members towards management.

    Lack of accountability and low level professionalism.

    Excessive government control and political interference.

    Lack of human resources development, education and

    training. The market is still not accessible to small and marginal

    farmers.
