EOXIDE LQ: Agriculture and Food Industry

The most widespread used disinfectant is chlorine. The use of chlorine implies numerous general acknowledged disadvantages and hazards. The hazards of chlorine involve both safety and health related risks and effects that can only be avoided by ending the use of chlorine and applying a disinfectant with completely different characteristics.

EOXIDE LQ is a superior disinfection concept that has been acknowledged in numerous countries.

EOXIDE LQ is an advanced delivery system to generate 99.9% pure chlorine dioxide in an aqueous solution which allows a full replacement of chlorine with perfect disinfection results.

The industry has been looking for alternatives to replace the use of chlorine for a long time. Many chemical and mechanical concepts have been tested and evaluated but with only limited results or new problems to be tackled.

When EOXIDE LQ is applied many of the undesired limitations of classical disinfectants are absent, e.g.:

• EOXIDE LQ provides more microbiological security as the full spectrum disinfection capacity of EOXIDE LQ® kills all in water common micro-organisms, viruses and pathogens (including Legionella control);

• EOXIDE LQ removes the biofilm and prevents the re-growth of this dangerous biofilm; • EOXIDE LQ does not cause allergic reactions (no skin irritation and eye irritation) and does not

generate an irritating smell or taste when dosed into the water like chlorine. • EOXIDE LQ does not generate TriHaloMethanes (THM's) or other carcinogenic disinfection

by-products; • EOXIDE LQ is not corrosive when dosed into the water. • EOXIDE LQ enables you to disinfect without the use of chlorine and does not generate free

chlorine; • EOXIDE LQ is not explosive and a chemical substance with only a limited hazard class; • EOXIDE LQ is applied with standard equipment available in the market. • EOXIDE LQ provides its superior disinfection power in a broad pH-level bandwidth (pH-level

4 to 10); • Less chemical use to optimize microbiological control; • EOXIDE LQ is easy to transport and store; • EOXIDE LQ restproducts after and during the disinfection are very small traces of

Sodiumchloride and Sodiumsulphate Plants and Fruit: Most of the growers and greenhouses who are using EOXIDE LQ have perfect results on the crop when they spray or drip a concentration between 0,2 and 0,3 ppm of EOXIDE LQ on the plant/fruit/vegetable or use it as water on the soil. Outside on the field the growers are spraying between 1 and 3 ppm of EOXIDE LQ directly on the plants/fruit to kill pathogens, viruses and funghi. EOXIDE LQ is not damaging the crop and the roots of the plants like chlorine is doing.

Irrigation systems: Important is to keep the watersystem free from algae. Even in dark places algae grow very fast in combination with a fertilizer and increase the grow of a biofilm in the system. This biofilm increases the bacteriacount and has a very negative effect on the growth of the crop. Most of the clients are doing a shock dose of 30 to 40 ppm twice per year during two nights in a row to make the system free from algae and biofilm. They do it for example in January and July between major crop cycles. Fill the distribution system (pipes) with 40 ppm EOXIDE LQ, let it work overnight (8 hours) and rinse the system in the morning; Repeat this the next night if needed. Then start the continuous dosing with 0,3 to 0,4 ppm in the clean system. Important: If the system is free of algae, adding further downstream fertilizer will not increase the growth of biofilm and/or algae. A pure quality of chlorine dioxide like EOXIDE LQ dosed into the water is not corrosive. EOXIDE LQ can be corrosive when the pH of the water is less than 4. The chance of damage to the plants is very small because of the low dosage and the fact that EOXIDE LQ is not corrosive when dosed into the water and the pH of the water is never lower than 4.

Surface Wash Water Cleaning (floors, walls, equipment, etc):

In many food factories there is an on-going process of washing floors, walls and equipment during canteen breaks, change of shift, change of product or recipe or at scheduled stops. In many instances it is prudent to utilise the fact that 0.25 ppm chlorine dioxide residual in the wash water will reduce the build up of pathogenic bacteria. This on-going washing process results in the lowering of “ environmental diseases” like salmonella, alicylcobacillus and other pathogenic or spoilage organisms that exist easily in the Food & Beverage environment

Washing Vegetables, Fruit: No damage of vitamin C with EOXIDE LQ: EOXIDE LQ will not damage Vitamin C in Vegetables and Fruit like other disinfectants are doing. Washing of the vegetables/fruits is undertaken in baths. This wash water is responsible for removing mainly soils off the products. Hence microbial loading of the water increases, thereby offering a contamination vector of the other products. It is therefor essential to treat this wash water with a disinfectant in order to improve and control the microbial quality of the water. In this way, one is able to offer some surface microbial reduction on the products, thereby extending the shelf-life. When looking at reductions in counts there 3 are factors that determine the efficacy of the disinfecting solution: contact time, concentration and turbulance (turbulance within wash solutions). The shorter the contact time and the absence of turbulance requires a higher concentration of EOXIDE LQ. Therefore, if washing of vegetables and fruit is done in a proper bath where there is water turbulance that drives the products through the packing line, the recommended dosage is 1,5 to 3 ppm with a contact time of 1 minute.

Packed Vegetables and Fruit: A great advantage of using EOXIDE LQ is that it kills all water born micro-organisms with low dosage rates. EOXIDE LQ will not damage the packed products because it is not corrosive dosed into the water and it will not generate smell/odour problems in the package like chlorine is dosing. EOXIDE LQ will guarantee a long shelf life of the vegetable and fruit inside the package without creating a smell/odour problem even when higher dosages are required in case the incoming water is highly contaminated. EOXIDE LQ will not generate hazardous disinfection byproducts like THM's in the water or on the vegetable of fruit. A residual of 0,1 to 0,15 ppm of EOXIDE LQ on the vegetables or fruit just before it is packed will increase the shelf life in the shops. Residual: To ensure the residual of EOXIDE LQ in the wash water the use of an ORP/Redox meter or ClO2 sensor is strongly advised in combination with standard dosing equipment.

In practise the quantities of EOXIDE LQ needed to have a perfect disinfection result are much less compared to the dosage of sodium hypochlorite. To achieve a Redox value of 600 Millivolts, a level of 2,5 ppm of EOXIDE LQ is enough to achieve this in the wash water. To achieve a Redox value of 600 Millivolts with sodium hypochlorite a level of 21 ppm is required in the wash water.
