Agreement

Agreement can occur in a large number of ways. We have seen mistakes with plurals and possessives, gender, function, shift, and a variety of others. The biggest issue that arises in papers is mainly attributed to singular and plural confusion, in two main ways:

• subject to verb• noun (pronoun) to pronoun

PRONOUN agreement

The biggest error students make with AGREEMENT is in the number of indefinite pronouns. They can be difficult due to problems with number. Thus, choosing the correct form of the verb becomes much more difficult.

• Each, either, neither, one, someone, everyone, anyone, no one, nobody, somebody, and everybody are singular subjects

• Several, few, both, and many are plural subjects.• Some, none, all, any, and most can be singular or plural. (in this

case use the context of the following phrase for clues)

Agreement with compounds

When making a compound… we usually use “and”, thus making a plural and requiring the plural form of the verb.

But, when using “or” or “nor” it is not considered plural. So, choose the verb tense that agrees with the subject nearest to the verb.

Ex.Either the boys or Charlie is responsible.Either Charlie or the boys are responsible.

Three AGREEMENT tips:

Subject to verb agreement can be made simpler by making certain we can identify the subject.

• The subject of the sentence will not be in a prepositional phrase

• For the five indefinite pronouns that can be singular or plural…use the context (prep phrase) to help determine its number

• As a trick to determine which verb you’d choose, replace it with a singular or plural noun/pronoun and listen (it’s not often I say that)
