SENIOR PROJECTOBESITY AWARENESS CENTER

U.A.E is the fifth most obese country in the world. It is also second obese country in the gulf region. TheNational states that 66% of women and men including the expatriates, are overweight or obese. Without the expatriates, the statistics would have been worse, which means the obesity issue is worse among the Emirates citizens.

People should know what to expect and how to fight it. Obesity Awareness Center might be what we need. The purpose of that building is a new start for a new fight of Emirates residents against obesi-ty not only practically, but also informationally.

Life is a combination of different events and experiences that occur in our daily routine. The routines that we plan the day before, or days and weeks before. We are used to the fact that not everything goes by our plans, and unexpected surprises are always there for us. There are two emotions that people get when they think about of their future. Fear of something bad, and a hope for something good. And it seems like these two emotions are within us 24 hours a day, including the dreams while sleeping. At the end of the day, what really determines the quality of our lives, is the actual good and bad things that happen to us. We all have our inevitable ups and downs, and it seems like our life is just something that is trying to fit between these ups and downs.

I was not told the exact amount of the budget that the client had, but I was told that the house should not look poor. I have designed this house, and it had been approved by the director of the company. The client was happy with the design, and before my internship ended on that summer, I had enough time to create some of the detailed drawings and cooporate with the Visual Designer of ARCON on a 3D model. I’ve put some of the drawings that I have made for this project to this portfolio, as an example of my work at ARCON.

While being an intern in the company ARCON for the third time, in the summer of 2013, I was given to design a small villa, which is located in Baku, Azerbaijan, by the director of the company. The client wanted a cozy small atmosphere, where he would have just enogh space for all his in-house activities. In terms of design, he wanted something simple, but at the same time something which attracts attention.

VILLA IN BAKUBasement

Back Facade (done by 3D Designer in ARCON)

The villa consists of 2 upper floors, and one basement floor. It has only 1 bedroom on the first floor. The client asked to create a space on the first floor that initially could be used as an office room for work, but in case needed, could be transformed to another bedroom. I have also applied exterior materials for the villa, but the materials were changed by other architects afterwards. Comparing the renders and the actual photographs, you can see the difference in materials. The project was completed in 14 month after I have started the design.

For the basement, it was asked to create a space for a billiard table. The villa also has a garage, and a small yard, which were designed and built later, by other architects in ARCON.

ARCHITECTURAL SCHOOL“SEEK KNOWLEDGE“

The site is located in the part of Dubai which is called the Knowledge Village. Many other universities are located in this part, such as theUniversity of Wollongog, Middlesex University, etc. This part of Dubai already has a developed infrostructure, such as a metro station, bus stations, tram stations, hospitals, office buildings, Mosques, etc.

The image that is created on the second skin of the tower is an arabic caligraphy, which means: Seek Knowledge. The idea of Seeking knowledge in Arab and Muslim world, is very important.

It was narrated that Anas bin Malik said: The Messenger of Allah said "Seeking knowledge is a duty upon every Muslim".

Some of the spaces in the building were extruded to in average of 1.5-2 meters. This was done due to the need of more space in some areas. For example, design studio classes had to be bigger than lecture classes, so they were one of the spaces which were extruded in this way.

The CoreThe core serves as the main structural element of the tower, taking the load of the rest of the building to itself. It contains the elevators, staircase, and the toilets.

The SidesThe sides bear the main purpose of the university, including classes, offices, library, cafeterias, etc.

The DivisionEach side was divided to even sided rectangles, which are 8 meters by 8 meters each. Each rectangle contains 2 floors.

On these elevations, the main style of the structure can be seen. The core serves as the load taker for all the columns and structures, as the walls of the core are very thick. The sides of the building are rested on the core, with the help of trian-gular cantilevers.

RESIDENTIAL HOUSE "THE PURITY"

Villa for Emirati people, Dubai, UAEIndividual project. 4th yearAmerican University in DubaiProfessor - Tiago Costa ([email protected])October - November, 2013In this assignment we had to design a villa specially for citizens of the Emirates.

The blank walls not onlyrepresent the privacy and value for the place, which is related to local culture, but also work as sustainable elements. The openings in the walls that face east and west were minimised, so that the heat in the most hottest times of the day, would not reach the interior of the house much.

In this project description, you can see the steps that were taken in order to reach the final design. One of the most convinient spaces to live in, is a rectangular space, from which the concept idea has started. Afterwards, similar shaped spaces were added. In conclusion, some orientation alternations were taken place, to achieve the final design.

THE PURITY

The villa is basically divided into two sides, connected by a corridor. The left side is the part that is kept private for the house residents, while the right part consists of maid rooms, maid kitchens, a majlis room and a bedroom for guests.

RESIDENTIAL BUILDING "THE UNIQUE"

Apartments for Emirati people, Dubai, UAEIndividual project. 4th yearAmerican University in DubaiProfessor - Tiago Costa ([email protected])November - December, 2013In this assignment, we had to design an apartment building for the Emirati people, where each apartment had to be approximately 500 square meters.

In this project description, you can see the main structure of the building, the cores and the columns, and how they are con-nected to the floor slabs. The design concept idea was to make a unique experience for each of the building residents. The love of Emarati nation for being unique, and having unique items has a long history, and I tried to continue the traditions of the local culture. In the diagrams above, we can see how all floor slabs are different from each other, bearing a different experi-ence for its owners.

The building is lifted up for 4 meters. The main reason is that Dubai in summer, especially in the areas not far from the sea, is very humid and hot. Lifting up the building for 1 floor, can create a windy area, which will make a much cooler weather conditions for pedestrians, and building residents.

One of the main ideas behind this concept was to let all places in the apartments, have sunlight.

THE UNIQUE

Each apartment is occupying one floor. The apartments are divided into 3 parts, which are all connected in the core. The first is the guest house with bedrooms and a majlis room. It also has bedrooms for maids, and the main kitchen where the meals for the guests are cooked. The second part is for male residents of the apartment, while the third is for female. The spaces were divided according to the traditions of the Emirati culture.
