Riversmart Washington is a partnership to

enhance District neighborhoods and

reduce demands on the District storm drain system

Runoff management goals:

Intercept the first 1.2 inches of runoff (90% of most rainfall events), from public property, before it enters the storm drain system Filter the runoff to remove sediment, chemicals and excess nutrients Retain as much of that volume as possible through infiltration or reuse for irrigation Monitor the change in runoff quantity

Study the design, constructability and maintenance of green infrastructure systems

as a model for other neighborhoods

Community enhancement goals:

Improve pedestrian safety and accessibility Enhance neighborhood aesthetics and ecological habitat value Increase tree canopy

Create community gathering areas and recreational amenities

Promote environmental education opportunities
