• Non-Profit Organization and funded by the United way• Was created on June 30, 1998 • Provides service to children from birth to twelve • Helping Parents to raise happy and healthy children• Supported by education teachers, psychologists, psychiatrists,

occupational therapists• Accredited by Children’s Mental Health Ontario

Description of Services• Early Intervention: Provide a variety of groups, workshops and

programs, such as prenatal nutrition program, speech and language services, and home visiting program.

• Autism Services: Provide evidence-based behavioral intervention services for children who with autistic disorder or an autism spectrum disorder.

• Community Support: Provide consultation and training to community child care programs; elementary schools; shelters; family resource programs and other community agencies.

Description of Services

• Day Treatment: Provide a supportive classroom environment for children who have problems attend their local schools. It includes family involvement.

• Family, Group and Individual Treatment: Provide flexible and responsive family counseling, individual therapy, behavior management and specialized groups for children and parents.

• Residential Treatment: Provide a safe and supportive place for children to deal with serious emotional and behavioral difficulties. It requires family involvement.

Day Treatment services…

• For children 4-12 years who have problems attend their local schools, need emotional and behavioural support.

• Such as learning disabilities, speech and language problems, attention deficit/hyperactivity, severe behavioural and adjustment problems, developmental delays and/or isolation from their peer group. It includes family involvement.

• Goals: help children learn new skills to cope with social and emotional stress; help them successfully return to a community school.

What do they offer families??

• a structured classroom environment for the child, including academic assessment and teaching

that is tailored to each child’s needs and learning style;• Comprehensive treatment support for the family, including – family counseling – individual counseling for children – treatment groups for children – additional groups as needed

What do they offer families??

• Consultation and assessment including psychological, psychiatric, speech and language, and

occupational therapy.• Placement support and follow-up to ensure that every child is returned to a classroom with

enough support and aftercare.• Ongoing case management and coordination with other

services and resources in our agency and the local community.

They operate at three school sites:

• Highland Heights School (10 children from ages 5-7)• Vradenburg School (12 children from age 8-10)• Holy Name School (16 children from ages 10-12)

Evaluation Method

The Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) was collected three times throughout the school year

1) at the time when the child entered the program (Time 1); 2) at the middle of the school year (Time 2) 3) at the end of the school year (Time 3)

• The CBCL was completed by each child’s parent or guardian1 who consented to being part of the evaluation, and by a Day Treatment Program staff member.

The process of this program…

This program provides groups for parents and children to address the following issues:

• conflicts between the parents that impact their children• importance of ‘shared parenting’• stresses of the transition and loss for the children• relationship of the children with each parent

The process of this program…• Two separate parent groups offered on different days:

–Primary Residential Parent Group – Non-Residential Parent Group • Two children’s groups: – 6-9 years of age – 10-12 years of age. • Children’s groups are on the same night as the Primary

Residential Parent Group. • 8 weekly meetings and each meeting is last for 1.5-2 hours.

What children and parents do?Children:

• meet other children who share similar experiences. • explore themes and feelings related to the divorce or separation through

games, fun and discussion. • express their views on the new family situation.Parents:• discuss and identify behaviors connected to separation and divorce.• learn ways to reduce children’s stress and support their sense of loss• learn strategies to cope with the change and improve their relationship

with children.• communicate with other parents and share feelings and ideas.

Possible Barriers for clients…• Time: not open every day; no 24 hours services. Some parents are

just available on weekends.• Area served: only serve East York and Scarborough. It’s not

convenient or not available for families from other areas.• Language: only some languages, such as English, French, Greek,

Spanish, and Chinese. Not all languages.• Funding: may not have enough funding, which may impact the

quality of their services. • Waiting list: Sometime the clients would be put into the waiting

list. They need to wait.
