RINGING NEWS Winter 2009
“Christmas is coming, the goose is getting fat!” That song always runs through my
head at this time of year, not because I care how much the goose is eating, or
because I’m a huge fan of Miss Piggy, but because I have so much to do before
Christmas actually gets here. So I have a melodic mantra accompanying my
mental list of: Hanging of the Green service, children’s pageant, choir cantata,
handbell concerts, caroling dates, performances here and there, Christmas Eve
services…I’m sure you have your own list. Ever wish you weren’t a musician at this
time of year? Instead of “the most wonderful time of the year” it often seems, for
musicians especially, to be “the most busiest time of the year”. My mom always asks
me why I can’t visit them at Christmas, and my answer is always, “because I’m a
church musician.” I’m not heading into any great wisdom, here. Sorry! I’m
commiserating with you. But my prayer for all of us this season is that we can find a
way to sit back and take stock and say, “It is good.” Remember why we do what we
do, and who we do it for. Have fun and enjoy those around you and make that time
together as much of a gift as your music is a gift to others.
I’m sure my church is not alone in its struggle to figure out the best way to handle
finances in this economic climate. The good news is that (I’m told) the country is
turning a corner and things are looking up. Even thought the future is uncertain and
we’re all being cautious, my handbell choir is determined to come to the 2010 Area
IX Festival next summer. We’re starting plans now, doing fundraisers, talking it up,
getting excited: I have a couple of ringers that practically jump up and down every
time we talk about it! I hope you are doing the same with your ringers and other
people you know. We picked Arlington because of its centrality, in the hopes that
travel costs would be lower. We’ve got a great hotel in the Crowne Plaza Suites, and
my information is that the Texas Rangers are playing at home that weekend…against
the Houston Astros! Plus Six Flags, both amusement and water parks; you could
make it a whole family vacation. How can you beat a weekend like this…bells and
baseball and Batman! And a lot of fun and camaraderie thrown in. Get with your
group and start making plans today. Talk to other groups and get them to come with
you. And if you can’t get a whole group together, come anyway! Our orphan ringer
choirs have become quite popular. We’ve got something for everyone and all ability
levels. You won’t want to miss it! Start now!
“Christmas is coming, the
goose is getting fat!” Yep,
still running through my
head. I wonder where my
copy of “A Muppet
Christmas Carol” is?
Ringingly Yours,
Sheryl ’Bob’ Cory

Area IX was deeply saddened this September by the loss of our friend, David
Davidson. There are hardly words to describe the contribution he has made to the
art of handbell ringing, or the level to which he has inspired, encouraged, and
driven us all as ringers and musicians, or the amount of light he brought into a
room, just with that extraordinary smile of his.
We encourage you all to visit AGEHR’s tribute website to Maestro Davidson, and
share the sentiments and stories of members across the nation.

“The mission statement of ‘Uniting people through a
musical art’ has always seemed noble to me. The term ‘art’
is elevating of the idiom, and the cause of bringing people
together under this unique umbrella is not only a concept
of fellowship, but also a uniting of human spirit of
performer and listener.” -- from “Crossroads”, David Davidson’s Keynote Address at the 2008 AGEHR National Seminar
In memory of David, Area IX is contributing a
percentage of money made on our 2010
Festival “Thrill of the Ring” Silent Auction to
the AGEHR Past Presidents Fund.
We hope you’ll consider supporting this
fundraiser for Area IX and the AGEHR fund
in David’s name.

May our musicianship and giving to the art forever honor the legacy of David Davidson.
Thank you for ALL, Maestro.
The Children's Chorus of San Antonio was the summer 2009 recipient of the Area IX chime loan program. The chimes were used for the summer day camp (ages 7 - 13) as well as the Youth Chorale/
Chamber Choir retreat (ages 11-17). Chorus member Teresa Hotard shares a note about the use of the chimes in this program:
