AGDF TIMESIssue 3, February 6-10, 2019
The third week of the AGDF featured the “Friday Night Stars” FEI Grand Prix Freestyle CDI-W, presented by the U.S. P.R.E. Association. U.S. dressage stars Laura Graves (USA) and Verdades performed a beautiful test and won the class with a score of 84.935%. The top three riders in the class all earned scores above 80%, which is a first in U.S. dressage history.
“This freestyle was nice. This was the second time I’ve ridden to this music. I’m definitely feeling a little more comfortable with it,” commented Graves, who has captured medals at the Olympic Games and FEI World Equestrian Games with Verdades, her 17-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding by Florett AS. “I’m glad to add another good score to qualifying [for the World Cup Finals]. In a normal year we’d be qualified by now, but we have one more show to do so we’ll be back at the end of February, I believe, to hopefully qualify.”
Kasey Perry-Glass (USA) and Goerklintgaards Dublet, a 16-year-old Danish Warmblood gelding by Diamond Hit owned by Diane Perry, also had a strong performance in the freestyle and came in second with a score of 82.425%.
“The weather was great for Dublet. He loves the cold weather,”
said Perry-Glass of her FEI World Equestrian Games™ Tryon 2018 (WEG) team silver medal-winning partner. “It really gets him a little bit more amped. I’m just very proud of him for this show, to come out and score a personal best in [yesterday’s] grand prix out of WEG. Unfortunately, I had a little bit of a spook coming in [the freestyle], so that kind of put me a little behind my music. I felt a little rushed throughout my choreography, but he nailed everything.”
Shelly Francis and Danilo (USA), a 15-year-old Hanoverian gelding by De Niro x Annabella owned by Patricia Stempel, earned an 80.535%, the third score above 80%, and came in third place in the freestyle.
“I just feel like my horse is really kind of liking this freestyle,” commented Francis about Danilo. “He kind of gets a little pumped up tonight with the cooler weather. It was good. He felt really fun and awesome though; he was just trying to do everything. The piaffe and passage and pirouettes are always getting better, and he’s always been pretty good about the changes. He’s kind of coming into himself.”
Judge at C Michael Osinski commented, “It just was an honor to watch all three of you, such elegant, harmonious, beautiful riders. It was just great, and I wish them all the best.”
“I think that we did not have many qualifiers in the Western European league this year or last year, that were that strong,” noted AGDF Director of Sport Thomas Baur. “I think we have come along way here, and it’s pretty amazing.”
“It’s been a really exciting week for us,” said Jane Bistline of the U.S. P.R.E. Association. “We had the U.S. P.R.E. event on Wednesday night, where everyone brought their Spanish horses and we really had a nice time.
“We’re just really honored to have you here in America,” she said to the top three riders.
The “Saturday Night Lights” of the 12-week Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF) beamed on Palm Beach County Charities during the 10th Annual Great Charity Challenge, presented by Fidelity Investments® (GCC), on Saturday, February 2. Holy Ground Shelter for the Homeless took home $150,000 as the lion’s share of the more than $1.3 million in prize money on offer after their team of riders David Blake, Carly Dvorkin, and Madelyn Ruskin, along with team sponsor Pine Hollow and corporate sponsor Havensafe Farm, took the victory.
In total, 26 pro-am combinations were paired with randomly selected Palm Beach County charities. Each team consisted of junior and amateur riders competing side-by-side with top professionals, including several Olympians.
“We Are The World” was the theme of the night with riders, charities, local families, and horse sport fans coming dressed in support of their favorite nation. In total, the evening’s contributions brought the overall Great Charity Challenge tally to $13.5 million distributed to more than 230 well-deserving Palm Beach County charities over the last 10 years.
Madelyn Ruskin aboard Abazu BSM, Carly Dvorkin on Carlotta 168, and David Blake riding Emilia made up the top trio of riders, presented by team sponsor Pine Hollow and corporate sponsor Havensafe Farm. They produced three perfect rides on the relay-style course to finish on
a final time of 91.904 seconds. The winning charity, Holy Ground Shelter for the Homeless, shelters and mentors homeless, pregnant, and parenting young girls and their children ages 17 to 23.
“I can’t even begin to put into words what this means to us,” said Phyllis Turner Jepson, Executive Director of Holy Ground Shelter for the Homeless. “This is life-changing, and it means that several lives will be changed because of this money. They did such an amazing job for us and I told them earlier when I met them that I had a really good feeling, but this is a better feeling! We’re in shock and just so deeply, deeply grateful.
“I want to thank Paige [Bellissimo] and [GCC Executive Director] Anne Caroline [Valtin], because I know that the two of them have worked so, so hard to put this together,” continued Jepson. “So many charities have benefited from this event!”
Great Charity Challenge Founder Paige Bellissimo commented, “Year after year, you think, ‘Wow, this is the best year ever.’ Then the costumes get better, the energy gets better, everyone gets a bit more excited, and they tell their friends to come. It just keeps growing, and it’s really an amazing event that bridges the local community and the equestrian community. I’m so thankful for everyone who’s a part of it.”
“We hold a strong belief that change happens through the power of united

announces:
“CaptiveOne is proud to announce that it is providing complete riding outfits for the 15 riders of the Vinceremos Special Olympics team,” Laura Southard, CaptiveOne’s Brand Ambassador, announced at Friday’s 32nd annual Vinceremos Dinner and Benefit Auction.
Ruth Menor, the founder of Vinceremos and coach of their Special Olympics team, was elated to receive the “Competition Scholarships.” CaptiveOne is teaming up with EC Pro (@echicpro), an equestrian fashion store, to supply the team with branded team show jackets, competition shirts, and breeches.
This is the most creative and meaningful donation any one of our sponsors has ever come up with,” Menor told the 440 gathered supporters at the pavilion of the International Polo Club.
“In the past, our Special Olympics team has competed in outfits that didn’t match,” explained Susan Guinan, Chief Operating Officer at the Vinceremos Therapeutic Riding Center. Of course, Vinceremos is infinitely grateful for each and every contribution. „Special Olympians are often seen as individuals with disabilities trying to compete in a sport. But they are athletes; they practice and prepare for competition with the same heart and discipline as all Olympians.”
Being a part of a team builds pride in each member, each other and those that support them, they have a responsibility to each other,” explained Guinan.
The uniform serves as a visual reminder to all of that dedication and respect. Vinceremos is grateful that CaptiveOne recognizes the commitment of these special equestrians through the generous donation of team jackets.”
Vinceremos serves children and veterans with developmental, physical and psychological disabilities in its dynamic stable environment. In 2018, the
charity taught 5,900 lessons, and their volunteers spent 21,000 hours serving their community.
Wayne Jenkins, the founder of CaptiveOne Advisors and a longtime Wellington resident, told Guinan “I am thrilled to support Vinceremos. You are doing such amazing work right in my hometown community.”
CaptiveOne’s partner, EC Pro, will host “Vinceremos Days” at the Adequan® Global Dressage Festival on February 8th and the Winter Equestrian Festival on March 23rd with a portion of net profits going to Vinceremos.
Laura Southard, CaptiveOne’s Brand Ambassador, presents the “Competition Scholarships” to Vinceremos founder Ruth Menor and Kai Sepersaude, rider of the year, while Elle
Woolley, from EC Pro, wearing a uniform similar to what the Vinceremos Special Olympics Team will be receiving, is hugged by volunteer of the year, Evan Hubner.

communities,” said GCC Executive Director Anne Caroline Valtin. “We hope that all who attended the GCC are inspired to keep working together to better the lives of so many in Palm Beach County.”
Team sponsor Pine Hollow has been involved with the Great Charity Challenge since its inception and watched their team finish second in 2018 before jumping to victory this year.
“My favorite night of the year is definitely tonight,” said Howard Dvorkin of Pine Hollow. “Helping the homeless and the women that this charity serves – I can’t think of a better organization to win this event.”
Speaking to the strategy of their team, anchor rider Blake noted, “I think the main thing in this class is to get good transitions from rider to rider, so we definitely focused on that. We earned this money for our charity focusing on that strategy, and I think that’s more important than going for the speed. Tonight we came out on top for a great cause!”
Blake trains Carly Dvorkin, who shares a special dedication to the event with the rest of her family, include father Howard and mother Gwen.
“The Great Charity Challenge has always been very unique and special to my family,” she said. “My favorite thing is seeing the charity’s faces – everyone from the charity being so grateful and appreciative. It means so much to me because I’m doing what I love while helping others.”
With a sound strategy in place, the top team also selected horses perfect for the job. Ruskin, who participated in the event for the second time this year, was
especially proud of her mount, saying, “I love going fast; that’s one thing that I really enjoy. I’m so grateful for my horse. He takes care of me so much, and he’s a great partner to have.”
Riders Katherine Barnard, Samantha Wight, and Daniel Bluman were just a single second shy of the win in 92.817 seconds, but second place still delivered $125,000 to their charity, the Kids Cancer Foundation. The runner-up team was supported by team sponsor The Wight Family and corporate sponsor Artemis Farm.
The third place team, made up of Claire Schreder, Coco Fath, and Molly Ashe, jumped for Speak Up For Kids Palm Beach County and won the charity $100,000 with a time of 94.046 seconds. Their team sponsor was Louisburg Farm and corporate sponsor Fidelity Investments®.
“I think a really important aspect of this event is that it helps the local community, concluded Bellissimo. “We are really trying to see and inspire change right within our own neighborhood. There are so many amazing charities within Palm Beach County that do just that, but access to funding is very difficult. So being able to give them access to funding so they can do what they do best is what makes this event so special.”
All 26 charities selected for the Great Charity Challenge received a share of prize money on a sliding scale at the conclusion of the evening with the smallest amount totaling $15,500. More information on the Great Charity Challenge and the 2019 winning charities can be found on page 4 or at www.greatcharitychallenge.com.

Tell us a little bit about you and your horses and what you’ll be competing in?This will be my sixth year at AGDF. [I spent] two years [here] as a groom and four years as a rider. I moved to Wellington full-time last year. I have two horses that I’m competing this season. One is my U25 horse Aristo. He is a 14-year-old Dutch gelding out of Olivi. The other one is Decampus, who is an eight-year-old Hanoverian out of Desperados.
What do you hope to accomplish with your time here at global? This season I hope to be able to show successfully in the U25 CDIs.
What's your most positive experience at AGDF?My favorite thing about AGDF is definitely the Friday night freestyles. Every Friday night inspires me to work towards showing under the lights myself.
What does the rest of your competition year look like? This competition year I hope to compete in some more CDIs in the U25 division. I have never showed at Tryon before, and I really would like to do that this year.
When you're not riding, what can we find you doing?I’m about to finish my degree in business law. I also love to watch movies with my friends and enjoy everything that Wellington has to offer.
