Parents in the Philadelphia area have many camps to choose fromwhen planning for the summer. With these choices comes the responsibility of selecting one that best fits the needs of your child, as well as your own schedule. At Abington Friends School (AFS) you will find summer camp programs that are responsive to theseneeds. For over 40 years the Abington Friends Summer Enrichment Program has been dedicated to providing campers with a truly enriching summer experience. We have a strong andproud tradition of providing programs that generate the smiles and memories that last a lifetime. Here at AFS your child can participate in a variety of “different camps” on our beautiful campus. Whether you choose the traditional day camp, a specialtycamp or an academic camp, our philosophy remains the same: wewant children to be happy and we truly believe they find happinessthrough having fun and making connections in a variety of engaging activities. Robotics Academy 6-9Developed by the National Robotics Consortium at Carnegie MellonUniversity, this program is specifically designed to use the motivational effects of building robots to teach math, science andengineering concepts. Activities include designing and buildingrobots, learning programming and presentation software, working inteams, mastering tasks, and sharing in robotic challenges with theirfellow students. Students must pack a snack and lunch.

Rocketry 8-12Rocketry enables youngsters with no experience to become seasonedrocketeers. Along the way they learn some basic physics, a little rocketryhistory, and have a lot of fun! Our campers build, craft, creativelypaint, and launch their rockets under the careful eye of our staff.Students must pack a snack and lunch.

Writing Workshop 10-14Ever wonder if you might be the next great American novelist, like F.Scott Fitzgerald or Toni Morrison? Maybe you’ve considered the possibility of writing essays in the company of David Sedaris orNancy Mairs? Perhaps you think of yourself more as a poet—abrooding Emily Dickinson or exuberant Billy Collins, the UnitedStates Poet Laureate. Or maybe you just want to improve your writingskills. If any or all of these statements describe you, then you areinvited to attend the Abington Friends School Summer WritingWorkshop to experience great literature and perfect your writingskills. Students must pack a snack and lunch.

Goin’ Fishin’ 10-14Grab a fishing rod, grab your book, pack a snack and lunch, and offyou go to a new location every day until noon. Return to AFS andspend your afternoon relaxing by the pool. There are going to besome great fish stories after this week. Snack will be provided butcampers must pack a lunch.

Painting & Drawing 10-14If art is your favorite subject in school, you will love this fine artsimmersion camp. During the mornings, campers will have theopportunity to develop their art skills through a combination ofpainting and drawing activities. Snack will be provided, but campersmust provide a lunch.

AFS Summer Day CampsThere are few things that children look forward to as much as thebeginning of their summer vacation. It’s a time when they enjoy thepleasures of being outdoors, swimming, their friends, andseemingly endless play. In short, it’s a time for kids to havefun. At Abington Friends School, we offer a camp day that is filled witha variety of activities that will make it an unforgettable summer for your child.

This program is designed to continue many of the

experiences the children in Early Childhood have during

the academic year. The activities are specific to their

developmental level and the focus is on having fun. The

goal is to allow children to make discoveries, experience

enriching activities and have social interactions with the

other campers by working individually and in small groups.

The program is staffed by Abington Friends Early Childhood

teachers and by assistants (in college or recent graduates)

who have experience working with children. Parents must

provide a lunch.

er Day Camps

In our Junior Camp, children are grouped by age in self-contained settings

for an enriching sampler of scheduled activities that include art, music,

games, free play, storytelling, creative movement, and drama. Junior camp

is designed to promote socialization, independence, creativity and

problem solving in the very young child while an emphasis is placed on having

fun; after all children learn best when they enjoy what they are doing. All of

our junior campers receive daily instructional swim lessons with one of our

Red Cross certified Water Safety Instructors. In Junior Camp, our teachers

follow weekly themes that culminate in exciting Friday activities. Designed

to capture the interest of youngsters, past themes have been: Trains,

Planes & Automobiles, Tea Time, In The Good Old Summer Time, Space

Adventure, Surf’s Up, My Teddy Bear, Monster Madness and Little Chefs.

Half day options are available.

Lunch / Snack: Lunches will be served daily and are included in the camp

payment. Menus will be handed out at the beginning of each session. A

morning snack,which usually includes juice, graham crackers, cookies, etc.,

will also be provided.

Our Senior Campers enjoy a morning filled with

scheduled innovative activities that are directed by

adult professional teachers and coaches. Grouped

according to age, participants attend a different set of

activities each day. Sports, tennis, games, archery,

karate, drama, music, dance and art are all classes on

the weekly schedule. Campers receive a daily

instructional swim lesson by a Red Cross certified

Water Safety Instructor in one of our two swimming

pools. At AFSEP we recognize the need for campers to

participate in their favorite activities. To accommodate

them, weekly electives are offered that allow campers

to choose activities that provide them with ample time

doing what they enjoy most. Lunch and snack are provided.

Camp Endeavor is more than a traditional camp, it’s a place

where campers can find and pursue the activities they are

passionate about. We believe that campers in this age range

should have choices beyond the traditional camp fare.

Campers choose areas of interest, such as outdoor adventures,

performing arts, visual arts, science or athletics and they

have multiple opportunities to pursue them during the

course of our five-period day.

Free Choice Activities periods give campers the opportunity

to continue exploring their areas of interest. We also set

aside community time because we know it’s important for

kids to have the space to socialize. During community time,

campers come together and take part in camp wide activities,

such as a rousing game of capture the flag, a fast-paced

pick-up game of basketball, a free swim in the pool or relaxing

in the shade with a group of friends and a roll of Gimp.

This program is available to campers with specialinterests and talents who are entering high school. Itseeks to develop the skills needed to become acompetent junior counselor. In the mornings, our CIT’sare assigned to a group or an activity where they developtheir leadership skills and sense of responsibility throughtheir daily interaction with campers, camp staff andparents. After lunch, CIT’scan participate in our weeklyelective activities, swim or continue assisting the staff asneeded. Our CIT’sare given specific group challengesover the course of the camp season and volunteering toparticipate is an essential component of the CIT campexperience. Most CIT’sspend two years in the programbefore applying for a position as a junior counselor. Snackand lunch will be provided.

Permission StatementsI have read and agree to abide by the general guidelines of AFSEP. I hereby give permission for my child to participate in all tripsand activities sponsored by the Abington Friends Summer Enrichment Program (AFSEP). I give permission for my child to travel toand from events with an ASFEP staff member in either a chartered bus or school van with an adult driver. Staffed by experienced teachers and assistants, the

Extended Day Program offers working parents the

support they need to make camp fit into their busy

schedules. Mornings begin in the Hallowell Gym at

7:30am. At 3:30pm, campers gather at the assembly

area to begin their afternoon. A snack is provided for

our campers along with an opportunity to rest and

relax after a busy day at camp. Afternoon activities

might include swimming, sports, board games, craft

projects and dramatic play. Whether outside or in one

of our air conditioned classrooms, children will have

the opportunity to play and mingle with friends and

peers. What a great way to begin and end a wonderful

day at camp!

Van transportation is available to and from Abington

Friends School. Transportation Fees depend upon the

distance you live from the school. One-way and round-trip

transportation are both offered. Areas served are subject to

determination depending on enrollment.

Dear ...,

I spoke briefly with you yesterday about how grateful I've been for my son's AFSEP experience this summer. He is in the "Fours" group,the Pinecones, and I couldn't be happier with the quality of activities and the nurturing, fun relationships he has with his counselors.Nathaniel has blossomed this summer. He has new levels of confidence and social ease, and he clearly feels like he is part of a specialcommunity. He is known at AFSEP, and he feels like he belongs. Every day as I drop him off, he waves to a junior counselor or aninstructor, and they wave back, using his name. The other day he said, "Mom, it's strange, but the only times I miss you during the day arewhen you drop me off and when I have nap. I don't miss you during the whole rest of the day." That must mean he's happy andengaged!! Hooray! He is doing all kinds of new and exciting things. He comes home and wants to teach me karate exercises and campsongs. He is even taking pride in his artwork, about which he's previously been hesitant and discouraged. Last week I was stunned to hearthat he was beginning to swim on his own and was even willingly dunking his head underwater. This is a kid who has considered hair washing torture and was afraid to swim with a a floaty at the beginning of the summer. To top it off, my son, who has been sleep-challenged since birth, is now often sleeping a solid 11 hours at night. That is a gift in itself!!
