INTRODUCTION • INTRODUCTION
CD 1 Introduction
Fifteen years ago there were no drumset players playing in
bands in Africa—only hand drumming. We're just starting
to develop this art form. Maybe these rhythms seem com
plex, but the more that we play them the more it willbecome accepted. Just like in Cuban music, for instance,
playing with the clave, it's not so easy but it can be
learned. We're taking hand percussion rhythms, putting
them on the drums, and creating a pocket. What I mean
by "in the pocket" is that people can dance to it.
Mokhtar Samba
Introduction
Mokhtar Samba
EDITORS NOTE
What may seem like a simple book is one of the most
challenging projects I have ever been involved with.
The concepts developed by Mokhtar represent over
twenty years of serious study by an African musician in
the competitive and constantly evolving European
music scene. These are not rhythms that you are born
with. These are rhythms you learn.
Each chapter contains two types of examples. The
movements are exercises designed to develop the
necessary coordination and mental dexterity to playthe patterns. Approach the patterns after mastering
the movements with a metronome. Each pattern is
accompanied by CD tracks with and without the per
cussion tracks. Constantly refer to the CD tracks to see
if your time, and feel, is moving in the right direction.
Several times I felt I had the pattern confidently in my
hands but got a rude awakening when I put on the CD.
Mokhtar has amazing time and his groove is very
clean, confident and direct. You'll see what I mean.
As the African concepts become clearer, find the
records that he plays on and listen with your new ears.Remember, it takes time. Remember, these rhythms
are centuries old, and have taken Mokhtar decades to
develop on the drums. You're not going to master
them in a matter of months. Finally, thank you
Mokhtar for showing me these rhythms, and your
patience while I learned them.
Dan Thress
NOTE DE L'EDITEUR
avons baigne depuis notre naissance.
Chaque chapitre comporte deux types d'exemples. Lesmouvements sont des exercices pour developper
I 'indispensable coordination et la dexterite mentale
requises pour jouer les patterns. Attaquez les patterns
seulement apres avoir maitrise les mouvements, en
utilisant un metronome. Chaque pattern s'accompagne

Gnawa music is from the south of Morocco, Algeria and
Tunisia, but mostly from Morocco. I grew up hearing
this rhythm in Morocco. Each Friday in Morocco the
Gnawa musicians play in the street. Parents tell their
children that unless they behave the karkabous (metal
castanets) player will play the karkabous on their ears!So as a child I remember being totally transfixed by
watching these musicians and listening to these
grooves. It was as if they were talking to you.
In a Gnawa band there is percussion, but no drumset,
so what we play is an adaptation. Myself and Karim
Ziad are two of the first drummers to adapt these
rhythms to drumset. The phrasing is very difficult to
explain and there is no explanation necessary without
first listening to it. This is spiritual music that uses
trance to communicate. I t's not a busy style; it uses a
lot of repetition. I f you see the people dancing aroundthis rhythm you are going to begin to understand it.
The instrument you are imitating is the metal hand
castanets known as karkabous. This is the clave or
guide to the shape of the rhythm. Place your pattern
inside the rhythm of these percussion instruments. On
the CD you will notice that the first example is played
with the percussion and the second without. Practice it
both ways. It will take time. J ust like learning tradi
tional jazz or Brazilian music you have to spend years
developing the appropriate feel or swing of the style.
And the only way to understand it is to try to feel it. It
takes a great deal of time to become comfortable in
the special language of the style.
Je me
souviens avoir ete impressionne, etant gamin, en voyant
ces musiciens et en ecoutant leurs rythmes. C'etait comme
s'ils me parlaient.
Placez votre pattern a I'interieur du

Learning the notes on the page is only the starting
point to learning a rhythm. The next step is to play
along with the CD tracks and imitate the phrasing. It's
the feel that matters. Play clear, clean 6/8 patterns
because it's easy to lose the groove. When you have a
coordination problem, isolate the difficult part of the
phrase and work on it. Repetition. Get the rhythm in
your hands.

The following examples build on the sticking pattern
(RRL) by moving from the hi-hat to the snare in a
sweeping motion. This will seem difficult at first, so prac
tice each movement slowly until the motion becomes
fluid. Don't be in a hurry to play the next rhythm. Stay
and make them groove at different tempos.

The following examples continue the sticking pattern
(RRL) but this time the motion is snare to hi-hat. The
snare drum is played on the beat and swept up to the
hi-hat. Again, this is an unusual movement that will
take time to master.

Maghreb is a term for the territory, people and culture
of North Africa specifically the former French colonies
of Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia, formerly known as
Afrique du Nord. The music of this vast, mainly desert
region, is a mix of African, Middle Eastern, andEuropean cultures. This predominately Islamic region
shares the duel languages of Arabic and French. The
slave trade brought the Maghreb region in contact with
"Black Africa." As we saw in the Gnawa chapter, similar
musical forms can be found in each country. A modern
or popular form of Maghreb music known as Rai has
developed to incredible levels of popularity in Algeria
and France.
The rhythms in this chapter are more roots oriented
than rai which is sometimes blended with the west in
terms of the groove and production. These rhythmsmove very fast, but practicing them slowly with a
metronome will let the rhythm take root inside of you.
Practice the snare drum parts as cross-sticks or with
the snare off while you are learning the pattern and
getting a feel for it. The bass drum is always in the
same spot.

Now the first pattern. Think melodically—the clave or
melody (shape or contour of the rhythm determined by
the snare and bass) is the most important part of the
groove—not the ride pattern.

Commencez lentement.

MANGAMBE MANGAMBE
Originally from Cameroon, mangambe has become a
popular rhythm with African musicians living in Paris.
Mangambe can be played at different tempos, begin
these exercises around dotted quarter- note = 104.
These first exercises are designed to help you feel
the different subdivisions against the ride pattern. Each beat (dotted quarter-note) has three eighth-
notes. You must become comfortable with all three
eight-note subdivisions. Work on these figures with a
metronome.
bles croches. II faut arriver a se sentir a I'aise avec toutes
ces subdivisions en double croche. Travaillez ces figures
avec un metronome.

BIKUTSI BIKUTSI
Bikutsi is another deep and complex rhythm from
Cameroon also popular in Paris. You can find similar
rhythms, with different accents, in the surrounding
countries of Ghana, Nigeria, and Senegal. We have
written these rhythms in 12/8 for clarity, but Africans
feel and count off this rhythm in 4/4. In other words
we hear it from the ground up. The subdivisions are
heard above the underlying pulse of four beats per bar.
We'll begin training our ears, and limbs, to hear and
play a polyrhythm of 3 over 4. Play along to the CD
tracks and listen to four-beat pulse played by the bass
drum and shaker. When playing bikutsi rhythms, take
care not to rush the tempo. The tempo on the CD is
dotted quarter-note = 138.
bikutsi movement 1

This is the same pulse written in 6/4 to help you learn

This next phrase takes the same idea but is played
only on the snare drum. This is a two-bar phrase and
on the CD I begin at the end of the second-bar (the
five-stroke roll). Although it has double-stroke rolls in
it, this pattern should not sound like a march.
1ёте mesure (un ras de 5).
marche.

DOUDOUMBA DOUDOUMBA
Doudoumba (doom-doom-ba) rhythms originate from
the West African countries of Guinea and Mali. Known
as the "strong man's dance/ ' doudoumba patterns and
variations can vary in different countries where you
may discover the same rhythm with a different starting
point. We begin with the clave or guide to the phrase.

These first movements are difficult because you must
keep the doudoumba clave outlined by the accents of
the pattern. Be patient and concentrate on the shape
of the rhythm. All stokes on the snare are alternated
RLR LRL etc.
alternes droite-gauche-droite/droite-gauche-droite etc.

Normally in Mali the melody (rhythm on the bass drum)
starts on the downbeat. An example of this can be
found on Salif Keita's recording Amen, in the song
"Kuma" played by drummer Paco Sery.

Now we'll alter the ride pattern and add the snare
drum. All notes on the hi-hat are played with your
right hand. This may be similar to a shuffle pattern,
but keep the phrasing of the doudoumba clave inmind, and accent the phrase accordingly. Your refer
ence point is Africa.
doudoumba movement 2
Votre
point de reference doit rester I'Afrique.

Now we will explore a concept that I developed when
working with Salif Keita. I joined Salif Keita in 1990
and recorded one record titled, Folon, The Past. My
favorite Salif record is Soro recorded in 1987 with
Cameroon native Brice Wassy on drums. Brice plays a
doudoumba rhythm on the tune "Cono" and when I
toured with Salif I adapted this tune as follows. First I
use a floor tom to the left of my hi-hat, eliminating theneed to cross-over my hands.

The last doudoumba pattern is found in Guinea. The dif
ference is the starting point. The ending pattern is a typi
cal djembe phrase that can be used to begin or finish the
rhythm. In Africa nobody is going to count off the
rhythm, somebody will typically begin with a phrase or
call like the one that finishes this groove.
doudoumba pattern 6

8/9/2019 African rhythms independence for drumset - Mokhtar Samba
http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/african-rhythms-independence-for-drumset-mokhtar-samba 43/50
SABAR SABAR
The sabar is from Senegal in West Africa. I 've been to
many places but Senegal is special. Youssou N'Dour lives
in Senegal and when he plays in Africa he plays his origi
nal style. When he comes to Europe he adapts his style
because European audiences are not used to listening to
the serious rhythm of the Sabar orchestras and will betotally lost. The percussion section is playing a thousand
notes and the time is so different.
The drumset part is a big challenge. You have to play
the groove but most important is the time. Most of the
parts that I play are simple, but when you listen to the
position of the bass, guitar and percussion everything
locks into place. I listen to his percussionists, Assane
Thiam and Babacar Faye, because there is a logic to
everything they play. Youssou's bass player Habib Faye
plays the sabar in clave including his fills. In fact,
Habib is playing percussion parts on the bass. Every
phrase has a relation to the drums.
Here is the clave phrase for the sabar:
sabar clave

Now we will adapt the sabar percussion parts to the
drumset. This groove is focused on the snare drum.
The left hand plays cross-sticks and the right hand
plays muted and open tones. The open tones are gen
erated by lifting the left hand up off the drum to let
the head vibrate freely. The flams are right-hand flams
and the grace-note is a cross-stick. The notation is a
guide. Listen to the CD to hear the phrasing and feel.
sabar pattern 1

MIGUEL ANGA DIAZ: ANGA MANIA!
Percussion Video of the Year—DRUM! Magazine 2000.
In this video, Afro-Cuban All-Star Miguel Anga Diaz shows
us the past, present and future of conga playing.
Divided into four sections, Anga demonstrates each example
in a solo context then in a duet performance. In the MAR-
CHA, GUAGUANCO, and SOLOING sections he reveals his
incomparable patterns and variations on five congas. Duetperformances with virtuoso Cuban pianist Gabriel Hernandez
help illustrate Anga’s ideas as he breaks-down his soloing
phrases, playing each slowly and explaining the origin of
each riff. In the MIXING STYLES section, Anga overdubs
three layers of different drumming styles, mixing funk with
the Cuban rhythms known as Pilon and Batumbata.
Anga also shows how congas can bring an organic feel to the
DJ-based styles such as Jungle in duets with producer DJ
Gilb-r and an improvised trio segment featuring Anga playing
his "Set-Cubano" mixing congas, bells, and drums (with both
hands and feet) to create a phenomenal flow of rhythm.
A detailed 40 page transcription booklet by percussionist
Victor Rendon is also included. Anga Mania! is in Spanish
with English Subtitles

MIGUEL ANGA DIAZ: ANGA MANIA!
(Afro-Cuban All Stars, Steve Coleman, Irakere...)
eclaire, I 'avenir des congas.

THE ART OF PLAYING TIMBALES VOL 1
A complete guide for developing rhythms, solos and
traditional timbale techniques. Includes drumset adap
tations, conga and bongo transcriptions, play-along
charts and full length CD.
"The Art of Playing Timbales presents practical
approaches to playing Afro-Cuban music in a profes
sional setting. More than a collection of syncopated
rhythms, Afro-Cuban music is a highly developed art
form built on structure and tradition. Like learning a new
language there are "situations" that need to be under
stood. Often a drummer (drumset player) is expected to
cover the job of the timbale or conga player. Other
times the drummer has to play with and complement
the congas, bongos, and timbales. Each situation
requires a different approach. Reading a drum chart can
also be an uneasy experience if you are not sure whatto play in the different sections of an arrangement. On
top of all this, you must play "in clave!"
I believe all drummers who want to play Afro-Cuban
music should study congas, bongos and timbales. This
method is essential to fully understand their function
as a unit. The study of timbales is important in particu
lar because everything that is played on the timbales is
directly transferable to drumset. This is the reason I
have taken a timbale approach in this book. The
rhythms are first presented for a timbale player with
congas and bongos, then presented with adaptationsfor drumset." —Victor Rendon

THE ART OF PLAYING TIMBALES VOL 1
« The Art of Playing Timbales offre une approche pra
tradition. Comme lorsqu'on apprend une nouvelle
langue, il faut comprendre certaines « situations ». On
