•Approved by the Statistical Commission at its Third Session in South Africa in January 2012

•Africa Group on Gender Statistics Coordinating the implementation of the Programme

•The Group is led by Ghana, includes a number of member states, AUC, AfDB, Statistical Training Centres, RECs, UN agencies, ECA (Secretariat)

•The programme covers a number of activities to be undertaken by various institutions on their own or in partnership with other organizations

•The report presents the activities so far implemented and is placed for adoption by the StatCom

•Assessment of Gender Statistics Programme in Africa

•African Statistics Day (18th November) celebrated in 2012 with the theme on gender statistics “Making every woman and man count: engendering statistics for better development outcomes”

•Development of manuals and handbooks

•Methodological research on gender statistics

•Gender surveys

Challenges to be addressed

•Need to develop a clear set of strategies for mainstreaming gender in national statistical systems through development of gender statistics programmes

•Although there has been significant progress in implementation of APGS there is a need to share information

•Need to improve coordination among the members of the Africa Group on Gender Statistics through more frequent interactions
