This project caters for schools that lack the resources to provide students with any physical education. While the focus is on sport, the priority is to develop life skills among underprivileged South African children. This helps bridge social divides, keeps children off the streets, encourages teamwork and builds their confidence.

Visiting several schools each day aboard a dedicated mini-bus, you will work as part of a team of approximately 12 volunteers plus full-time coaching staff. During school holidays, you will coach at activity camps and run tournaments which may include team sports such as football, cricket and basketball. There are also opportunities to introduce non-sporting activities, like arts and field trips. A township tour and fantastic bush camp dinner under the stars are included and you can also visit Kragga Kama game reserve, the surfing mecca of Jeffreys Bay and Bloukrans Bungee (if you dare!) at your own expense.

Highlights• Work with and care for large predators • Volunteer in a ‘Big 5’ reserve• Meet the Lion Whisperer himself

Kevin Richardson (also known as the ‘Lion Whisperer’) is a high-profile conservationist who runs The Lion Whisperer Wildlife Sanctuary. This project is devoted to caring and enriching the lives of the animals that live there, including lions, spotted and striped hyenas, black leopards, wildebeest and giraffes.

Volunteers will play an integral part in restoring Welgedacht Game Reserve back to its former glory. The reserve will be the first free-roaming Big Five of its kind in Gauteng. As most of the reserve was previously farmland, there are challenges in returning the land to its ideal condition.

The project will also involve maintaining, caring and managing the animals on the 45,000-hectare farm. Volunteer activities are varied and will include preparing food, game counts, anti-poaching walks and enclosure cleaning.

Highlights• Organise kids’ arts and sports activities • Immerse yourself in African culture • Work with friendly local Kenyans

Gain teaching experience in a challenging but hugely rewarding environment. Working with primary and pre-school children, you’ll provide extra support and encouragement to infants at underfunded and understaffed schools. Organise sports and arts activities for students, prepare teaching materials and add personality to classrooms with painted murals. Be prepared to fall in love – you’re bound to be won over by their smiles and hugs.

You’ll also spend time refurbishing and brightening up school buildings as well as interacting with commmunity members from Nairobi’s slums, thereby gaining a greater understanding of urban Kenyan life.

NairobiMaasai Mara

Highlights• Learn about amazing African wildlife• Teach trainee tourism guides • Work with local Maasai children

The Maasai Mara is quite possibly Africa’s finest safari destination. In the midst of the ‘greatest wildlife show in Africa,’ you will be involved in exciting conservation and wildlife activities in a spectacular conservancy area.

Make an impact by promoting the Green Villages conservation concept in surrounding Maasai communities and assist with the monitoring of lion, cheetah and leopard populations. There will also be the unique experience of working at a guide training school, assisting with training up local Maasai guides to promote sustainable tourism.

Work alongside fellow volunteers to paint brightly coloured classroom murals and, during the school year, you can expect to run an environmental club with young students at the local primary school.
