3AFRICA BUSINESS JET FLEET REPORT 2015
Asian Sky Group’s Business Jet Fleet Report aims to introduce a unique and alternative perceptive on the emerging business jet market in the Africa region. Most key African economies experienced greater than 3% real GDP growth in 2014 and these same economies are forecasted to be some of the fastest growing in the world in 2015 – greater than or equal to 6%.
Business Jet growth in Africa, however, is lagging this economic growth suggesting African business aviation is poised for some significant expansion.
From a start in 1964, the Africa business jet fleet has grown to 524 over the past 50 years, with rapid growth experienced over the last 15 years. Growth appears to have slowed in 2014 however.
61% of the fleet is under private operations, with 20% for charter.
The largest fleet resides in South Africa and is the only African country in the “Top 20” fleets of the world. The 2nd largest African market is Nigeria with 19% followed by Egypt with 8%.
The most popular OEMs are Hawker and Cessna with 22% (113 aircraft) and 20% (106 aircraft) market shares respectively. Not too surprisingly, the light and medium business jet categories represent over 50% of the African fleet.
The most popular models are the Cessna II/S/SP/Bravo family along with the H800 family from Hawker – each have 27 aircraft in Africa. The next most popular aircraft are the L45 and Falcon 900 – each with 20 in Africa.
The Africa business jet fleet in operation is the oldest in the world with 67% of the aircraft being operated within Africa and 20% being flown to the Middle East.
The largest private operators of business jets in Africa are Execujet South Africa and Absolute Aviation. The governments of Nigeria, Egypt, Morocco and South Africa also all operate sizeable fleets.
