Afraid to Know

Mark 9:30–32 (NKJV) 30 Then they departed from there and passed through Galilee, and He did not want anyone to know it. 31 For He taught His disciples and

said to them, “The Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of men, and they will kill Him. And after He is killed, He will rise the third day.” 32 But they did not understand this

saying, and were afraid to ask Him.

Now, um, now that is a possibility, and an intriguing possibility.

•…that there is a God.Romans 1:18–32 (NKJV)

18 For the wrath of God is revealed from God against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of

men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, 19 because what may be

known of God is manifest in them, for God has shown it to them. 20 For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly

seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead…

Some people are afraid to know…

…that there is a God.…so that they are without excuse, 21 because,

although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their

thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Professing to be wise, they became fools, 23 and changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an

image made like corruptible man—and birds and four-footed animals…

Some people are afraid to know…

…that there is a God.…and creeping things. 24 Therefore God also gave them up to

uncleanness, in the lusts of their hearts, to dishonor their bodies among themselves, 25 who exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen. 26 For this reason

God gave them up to vile passions. For even their women exchanged the natural use for what is against nature. 27

Likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust for one another, men with men committing what is shameful, and receiving in themselves the penalty of

their error which was due. 28 And even as they did…

Some people are afraid to know…

…that there is a God.not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a

debased mind, to do those things which are not fitting; 29 being filled with all unrighteousness, sexual immorality, wickedness,

covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, evil-mindedness; they are whisperers, 30 backbiters, haters of God, violent, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, 31 undiscerning, untrustworthy, unloving, unforgiving,

unmerciful; 32 who, knowing the righteous judgment of God, that those who practice such things are deserving of death, not only do

the same but also approve of those who practice them.

Some people are afraid to know…

…what God says because it will cost them their position among men.

Acts 13:44–45 (NKJV) 44 On the next Sabbath almost the whole city came together to hear the word of God. 45 But when the Jews saw the multitudes, they were

filled with envy; and contradicting and blaspheming, they opposed the things spoken by

Paul.

Some people are afraid to know…

…what God says because it means they will have to give up some long-standing traditions that they like.

Mark 7:6–9 (NKJV) 6 He answered and said to them, “Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written: ‘This people honors Me with their lips, But their heart is far from Me. 7 And in vain

they worship Me, Teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’ 8 For laying aside the commandment of God, you

hold the tradition of men—the washing of pitchers and cups, and many other such things you do.” 9 He said to them, “All too well you reject the commandment of God,

that you may keep your tradition.

Some people are afraid to know…

…because some people do not want to think about the brevity of life.

Acts 24:25 (NKJV) 25 Now as he reasoned about righteousness, self-

control, and the judgment to come, Felix was afraid and answered, “Go away for now; when I have a

convenient time I will call for you.”

But you need not live in fear:

1 John 5:13 (NKJV) 13 These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life, and that you may continue

to believe in the name of the Son of God.
