Facts: Afraid to Grade Several years ago, Ivy Tech received a Lilly Grant to
benefit adjunct instructors. I contributed a six-module Blackboard course entitled Afraid to Grade: Evaluating Student Communication.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES
As a result of this learning experience, participants should be able to do the following:
◦ Identify and prioritize common problems that our students have
with oral and written communication.
◦ Reinforce common literacy goals in the classroom.
◦ Emphasize students’ responsibility to use Standard English in all communications involving word usage, basic mechanics, and spelling.
◦ Use rubrics to grade subjective assignments.
◦ Assist students in understanding and avoiding plagiarism.
◦ Encourage students to write and speak well in all their courses and communications.
