AFL Victoria and the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) have always helped support the development of players off the field as young drivers. While the ‘Drive to the Game’ initiative has been a regular part of the TAC Cup calendar for years, 2017 will see a collective focus on one of the key TAC initiatives for Learner drivers in the competition.
The Round allows players to have important conversations with their parents and supervising drivers on topics such as 120 hours, the importance of night-time practice and how to best support and coach young drivers on the journey to their licence.
While Learner drivers are among the safest on the roads, in their first six months of driving they are 30 times more likely to crash.
Parents will be able to pick up a free coff ee and newspaper, enjoy a free BBQ and young drivers can go into the draw to win free driving lessons simply by showing their log book. It is all part of a valuable partnership with TAC that we are most grateful for.
This weekend will also see the start of the Peter Jackson VFL season, with Port Melbourne hosting the Northern Blues at North Port Oval. The game will be Borough stalwart Chris Cain’s 175th VFL match, earning him VFL life membership. He joins current players Ben Jolley (Williamstown), Orren Stephenson (North Ballarat) and teammate Toby Pinwill as part of the 175-game club and we wish him all the best.
The 175-game milestone is one we are seeing less of from a playing perspective, with the changing nature of VFL football over recent years. It is even more important now that we celebrate such an achievement, knowing the longevity and consistent standard a player must meet to achieve such an accolade.

The 34-year-old has taken the reins of the Vic Country
U18 program from Paul Henriksen, who guided
Country to the 2015 NAB AFL U18 Championships
Division 1 title in his first year in the job and is now a
development coach with the Brisbane Lions.
Battistello has been involved in Country’s U16
program for four years – including as U16 head coach
last year – and was an assistant coach at the GWV
Rebels for five years. Having not played in the AFL,
he’s been coaching for 12 years of his relatively young
football life.
Battistello’s unique skill set will be complemented
by having three TAC Cup head coaches as his
assistants – Craig Black (Dandenong Stingrays),
Leigh Brown (Gippsland Power) and Leon Higgins
(Murray Bushrangers). Black, Brown and Higgins will
bring knowledge of their own region’s players to the
Country program, while Higgins was the coach of
many in the current top-age group when it claimed
the AFL U16 Championships crown in 2015.
Former Vic Country and Bendigo Pioneers coach
Mark Ellis will be involved in the match committee,
while ex-West Coast key-position player Mitch Brown
will come straight from a 10-year career at the elite
level into a welfare and development role.
“I think my greatest strength is probably in drawing on other coaches’ strengths and making sure their energy and eff ort gets directed to the right areas for the players,” Battistello said.
“I got involved in the Vic Country program to see what the end product of a draft -able player was like and take a bit of that knowledge back to the Rebels program. I think I’ve got my head around what the end product looks like now and how to best prepare players for the national carnival.
“I’m absolutely a student of the game, and having not played AFL I’ve been trying to find a good mix between the intellectual property that the ex-AFL players bring and the skills I bring.”
Brown’s intellectual property certainly spans a wide range of experiences in football. The 28-year-old was delisted by the Eagles last year aft er 94 AFL games and soon approached GWV – his former TAC Cup club – to determine how he could give back to the state system from which he was selected with pick no.16 in the 2006 AFL Draft .
“I’ve had a 360-degree look at the ins and outs of professional football, from some success to having injuries to lack of form and even the trade process and getting delisted,” Brown said. “I’ve collaborated
The revamped Vic Country Academy coaching panel for 2017 is “probably the best and most exciting in a Country program for some time”, according to new head coach Mat Battistello.

all these experiences and I just want to pass my knowledge on.
“We tend to put all this emphasis on physical attributes and game-day strategies but I strongly believe that if you get the mental wellbeing of players to a high standard it greatly contributes to performance. This is an area of passion for me.
“My twin brother Nathan (ex-Collingwood and now St Kilda player) and I went through the Rebels program under Gerard FitzGerald (in 2005-06) and Fitzy was very much about our life development as well as football development.
“It was part of the reason why I was able to have a 10-year career at the highest level. I’m thankful for that and it’d be remiss of me not to give back and recognise how important that was in my development.”
Brown will also act as a match-day runner for Country and work with the program’s key-position players on the finer points of their craft .
Battistello said this year’s top-age Country group contained relatively few taller types though, with an array of talented small-to-medium players such as 2016 Vic Country representatives Lochie O’Brien (Bendigo Pioneers), Hunter Clark (Dandenong Stingrays) and James Worpel (Geelong Falcons)
exciting their new coach.
An extended squad of 40 to 50 of Country’s top prospects will converge on Ikon Park for a three-day camp from April 12-14. The camp will feature a variety of welfare programs driven by Brown and GWV Welfare Manager Brooke Brown and culminate on Good Friday with two trial games against Vic Metro teams.
AFL Victoria’s new Country Talent Pathways Manager Lee Fraser (former Murray Bushrangers Talent Manager) said the games would provide hopefuls “a chance to play at an even higher level with the very best under-age players in the state” and to put their names forward for selection in the final Country squad for the U18 Championships.
But Fraser doesn’t just see the Vic Country program as a pathway to the top for players.
“By having Craig Black, Leigh Brown and Leon Higgins involved in the program, we’re really tapping into the TAC Cup coaching structure for them to step up and provide these state academy programs,” Fraser said.
“Mat Battistello has been involved in the Vic Country program for a number of years and will take over the U18 coaching job from Paul Henriksen, who is now at Brisbane. That really demonstrates a clear pathway to the AFL for coaches as well as players.”

BAD WEATHER?IT’S A GOOD DAY FOR YOUR TEEN TO DRIVE TO THE GAME.
Rain, hail or shine, just like footy, your teen needs practice in all types of conditions. It’s vital to improving their driving. Just make sure they’ve had plenty of practice in fine weather, and feel ready and comfortable to drive in more challenging conditions.

Western Jets key defender James Martyn has had a couple of very knowledgeable supervisors overseeing his junior football journey.
The 191cm top-ager can call on father Steve – a North Melbourne U19s player in the 1980s before serious knee injuries forced him to retire – and uncle Mick – a 300-game champion of the AFL – for advice as he learns his craft .
Mick Martyn won two premierships and two best-and-fairests across 287 games for the Kangaroos from 1988-2002 before playing 13 games with Carlton in 2003 and is known as one of the finest defensive stoppers of his era.
Mick’s older brother Steve isn’t short of football wisdom to impart upon James either. As the TAC Cup recognises the importance of learner drivers gaining experience on the roads during the Transport Accident Commission’s ‘Drive to the Game’ Round this weekend, James said regular car trips with his father were valuable learning opportunities.
“Driving in the car with Dad, he gives me the rundown on what I’ve been tasked to do before the game, and then aft er the game he tells me what I’ve done right and what I’ve done wrong and how to improve it,” James said.
“When I identify a problem with my game I’ll probably go to Mick to get his wisdom, but if he sees something specific that he has a way to fix, he’ll also come and help me out.”
Martyn may have strong key-defensive genes but he hasn’t always played in the back line. He was a ruckman until his U14 year at Newport Power – where Steve was one of the club’s founding executive members – before playing as a forward when he later moved to Essendon Doutta Stars.
While also playing some school football as a forward for Geelong Grammar last year, the Jets recognised Martyn’s potential to hold down a key defensive post.
“I came into Western’s U16 program and I suppose my competitiveness was the thing that prompted them to put me at full back,” James said. “I think I also just slide into the team nicely there because we’ve got a lot of good forwards.
“It’s not all just the surname, but it’s in the genes as well; I’ve got those instincts in the back line. Having an uncle who’s played 300 AFL games at full back obviously helps.”
Despite eventually being known as defenders, Steve and Mick actually followed a similar positional path to James, another reason why Steve is well placed to advise his son on those car trips.
“When we were growing up, Mick and I were ruckmen and forwards too,” Steve said.
“From my experience, I tell James to put in the hard yards and listen to advice from people who have been there and done that. To his credit, he works as hard as he can, and he can play ruck, forward and – being a Martyn – full back.”

TAC Cup Round 2 Review
Three teams remain undefeated aft er
two rounds of the 2017 TAC Cup season –
the Geelong Falcons, Murray Bushrangers
and Sandringham Dragons.
All three teams were preliminary finalists in 2016, with the Falcons and Dragons putting more points on the scoreboard than all other teams so far while the Bushrangers have conceded less than any competition rival.
Last year’s other preliminary finalist the GWV Rebels are yet to record a win in 2017.
Geelong backed up an 82-point defeat of the Rebels in Round 1 with a 77-point victory over the Dandenong Stingrays (1-1) at Simonds Stadium on Saturday.
Leading by a point at quarter time, the Falcons exploded with five unanswered goals in the second term and never looked back. Highly-rated ball-winners James Worpel and Cassidy Parish ran amok through the midfield as Gryan Miers (five goals) and Tom McCartin (three) cashed in up forward.
Later on Saturday at Ikon Park, Murray notched its second win by 24 points in a scrappy contest with the Gippsland Power (0-2).
Only four total goals were kicked in the first half as the Bushrangers went into the main break with a 12-point advantage, but majors to Isaac Wallace then David Smith and Jessy Wilson opened up a defining break for Murray in the third quarter, last year’s grand finalist keeping Gippsland to just two behinds for the term.
Sandringham notched a seventh straight victory stretching back to 2016’s final home-and-away round in accounting for the Northern Knights (1-1) by 26 points at Ikon Park on Sunday.
Sebastian Williams booted the opening two goals of the game and then another crucial major to start the final quarter aft er the Knights hit the lead for the first time in the shadows of the last break. Joel Amartey also bagged two late goals as the Dragons re-established control.
Earlier on Sunday at Ikon Park, the Oakleigh Chargers opened their account for 2017 with a 21-point triumph over the Eastern Ranges (1-1).
The Chargers were humbled by Sandringham in Round 1 but responded with a nine-goal first half – captain Toby Wooller slotting four of them – to quickly put the Ranges under pressure. A goal to
Eastern ruckman Sam Hayes to start the final quarter eventually brought his team to within six points of the lead, but answering goals to Oakleigh’s Matthew Day and Jack Higgins proved the sealers.
The Western Jets and Bendigo Pioneers also joined the winners’ list with victories over the Calder Cannons (0-2) and GWV Rebels respectively.
Western’s 31-point win at Rams Arena was driven by big midfield performances from over-ager Judah Dundon and NAB AFL Academy member Lachlan Fogarty, helping the Jets lead the Cannons from start to finish aft er conceding a big early advantage in a loss to Northern last week.
Meanwhile, Bendigo prevailed by 12 points in a high-scoring contest with the Rebels at Alfredton Recreation Reserve, four goals from Brent Daniels and a powerhouse showing from on-baller Paddy Dow proving influential in the result.
The Murray Bushrangers are flying high aft er recording their second victory in Round 2

Both squads will then be reduced ahead of the lead-
up to the NAB AFL U18 Championships in June and

title in an undefeated campaign.
Brander in U18 Academy SeriesHighly-rated Bendigo Pioneers key-
position prospect Jarrod Brander
played well for the GWS Academy in the
AFL U18 Academy Series last Saturday.
The Wentworth junior took a handful of marks
but was let down by inaccuracy as the GWS
Academy lost to the Gold Coast Academy 12.3
(75) to 7.16 (58) in Blacktown.
Brander was recently ruled ineligible for
priority access by the Giants in the 2017 NAB
AFL Draft along with Murray Bushrangers
midfielder/forward Charlie Spargo, despite
both previously living in the club’s allocated
zone.
The Academy Series has replaced Division
2 of the AFL U18 Championships. The GWS
Academy has now lost its opening two games
of the series ahead of facing Tasmania in
Hobart on Saturday, the Northern Territory
in NSW on Saturday April 29 and the Brisbane
Academy in Broadbeach on Saturday May 6.

TAC Cup Girls
A new team has moved to top spot on the
TAC Cup Girls ladder aft er Round 3.
The Calder Cannons have claimed top-of-the-ladder status, cruising to a third straight win with a 108-point defeat of the Western Jets. The Cannons enjoy a superior percentage (374%) to fellow undefeated sides the Murray Bushrangers (368%) and Geelong Falcons (201%) with just two rounds remaining in the season.
The team on top of the ladder at the end of Round 5 will be crowned premiers, with Murray and Geelong meeting in what is the game of the round this week to see who will challenge Calder for top spot going into the final matches on Good Friday.
The undefeated run of Murray looked shaky in Round 3 as it trailed by four points at quarter time against Gippsland, but the Bushrangers wrestled the lead back in the second term and went on to record an eight-point win. Murray dominated the scoring aft er quarter time but inaccuracy cost them a bigger winning margin, kicking only three goals from 11 scoring shots. Chelsea Knight, Rebecca Webster and Grace Egan were among the best for Murray, while Tyla Hanks and newly signed Cranbourne Swisse VFL Women’s recruit Holly Whitford were named best for Gippsland.
Geelong surprised Dandenong in the first term at St Joseph’s, racing to a 22-point lead in the battle of the two undefeated teams. The Stingrays bounced back from a scoreless first term to cut the margin to just seven points at half time, but the home side then produced another three-goal term - like the opening stanza - to return to a 22-point lead and were able
to hold on in an even final term for a 29-point win.
Denby Taylor kicked three goals for Geelong and Paige
Sheppard two, with Lucy McEvoy their best. Shaneece
Stratton and Sophie Phillips were best for Dandenong.
Calder led from start to finish in a Wednesday night
fixture against the Western Jets, with Chloe Molloy
the star with five goals. The basketball convert kicked
three second-term goals as the Cannons rocketed to a
44-point half-time lead. Molloy had plenty of support
up forward with Monique Conti, Chloe Hodgson and
Georgia Patrikios all kicking two goals, as the Cannons
jumped to top spot on the ladder. Maddison Field was
the only goalkicker for the Jets, with Katarina Rebuff o
and Aleesha Hobbs their best players.
In other results:
- It was back-to-back wins for the Northern Knights,
defeating the Sandringham Dragons in a two-point
thriller at Frankston Oval. Northern jumped to a
13-point lead early in the third term and were able
to hold on for the win despite Sandringham kicking
the final two goals of the game.
- The Greater Western Victoria Rebels recorded win
number two for the season with a five-point victory
over the Bendigo Pioneers. The Pioneers hit the
lead for the first time in the match early in the final
term, but Faith McKenzie regained the lead for the
home side to see the Rebels remain in seventh spot.
- The Eastern Ranges returned to the winners’ list
with a 27-point win over the Oakleigh Chargers.

In a match decided by only 12 points, 193cm Bendigo Pioneers ruckman Jobee Warde put in an
important eff ort to neutralise the influence of 202cm GWV Rebels powerhouse Lloyd Meek. Despite conceding nine centimetres to his opponent, the Moama junior had 26 hitouts to Meek’s 23 to help the Pioneers to victory.
26
193cm key forward Toby Wooller exemplified why the Oakleigh Chargers defeated the Eastern Ranges by 21 points. The Chargers lost the clearance count by
15 but consistently won the ball back by laying a round-high 87 tackles. Oakleigh captain and Old Scotch junior Wooller had an equal-team-high eight of them.
8
The Western Jets recorded an advantage of 23 – more than double the amount of clearances than opponents the Calder
Cannons (40 to 17) – in their 31-point win in Round 2. Jets co-captain and Keilor junior Luke Hitch was a key player in the contests, racking up match-highs of 15 contested possessions and nine clearances.

Falcons flying forwardThe Geelong Falcons are perched on top of
the TAC Cup ladder aft er two rounds thanks
to a potent forward line full of variety.
Last year’s preliminary finalists have put 259 points on the board in their two victories so far – 73 more than any other team. They booted 20.9 (129) in defeating the GWV Rebels by 82 points in Round 1 and last week posted a score of 19.16 (130) to knock off the Dandenong Stingrays by 77 points.
The Falcons have promised so much in recent seasons but failed to produce in the finals. They’ve finished in the top four aft er the home-and-away rounds in each of the last four years but haven’t made a Grand Final appearance since claiming their second TAC Cup premiership in 2000.
Could Geelong’s 2017 forward line help them take that long-awaited next step?
The Falcons already boast six players to have kicked three or more goals this season, led by Geelong West Giants junior David Handley who booted 6.2 in Round 1 and 1.4 in Round 2. The 181cm half forward is complemented inside 50 by 194cm Torquay forward/ruckman Jordon Reid and 192cm St Joseph’s key forward Tom McCartin, who have both scored five majors this year.
McCartin’s three-goal outing against the Stingrays could have been bigger too, managing only 3.5 from 21 disposals and eight marks. 177cm Grovedale midfielder/forward Gryan Miers – whom Geelong Talent Manager Mick Turner recently compared to Western Bulldogs premiership star Luke Dahlhaus – had his goalkicking radar on though, slotting five straight majors from 23 disposals.
Miers has six goals to his name for 2017, while 171cm South Barwon junior Lachlan Noble has four and 176cm Barwon Heads bottom-ager Ned McHenry three.
The Falcons forwards have certainly benefited from their midfield teammates’ dominance, but a potent and varied forward line is the envy of most other teams.
The forward group at Adelaide – top-ranked in the AFL for points scored in 2016 – is evidence of that. If talls Taylor Walker and Josh Jenkins don’t get you, mobile forwards Tom Lynch and Mitch McGovern might – or failing that, the dynamic Eddie Betts and Charlie Cameron.

2016 FINISH: 8th (11-8)
2016 BEST AND FAIREST: 1. Brody Mihocek / 2. Toby Pinwill / =3. Khan Haretuku and Damian Mascitti
2016 TEAM OF THE YEAR: Khan Haretuku / Damian Mascitti / Tom O’Sullivan
FORMER PLAYERS CURRENTLY ON AFL LISTS:
- Selected from club in 2004: Josh Gibson* (North Melbourne/Hawthorn)
KEY 2017 INS & OUTS:
- In: Anthony Anastasio (Williamstown) / Dylan Conway (Williamstown) / Isaac Conway (Werribee) / Charlie Kelso (Sandringham) / Brodie Murdoch (St Kilda AFL) / Robin Nahas (North Melbourne AFL) / Sam Pickess (Frankston) / Eli Templeton (St Kilda AFL) / Shane Valenti (Old Haileybury) / Anthony Vella (Cranbourne) / Dillon Viojo-Rainbow (Carlton AFL) / Mitch Wooff indin (Knox)
- Out: Sam Crocker (Old Carey) / Guy Dickson / Nick Dixon (Collegians) / Jake McKenzie (Deer Park) / Josh Scipione / Dan Toman / Jason Williams
DEPARTED PLAYERS WHO’LL BE MISSED:
Josh Scipione: “Josh would be the big loss from a ‘team fit’ perspective, being a forward. We certainly felt we were pretty average as a forward unit last year.”
Guy Dickson: “Guy’s departure was something we didn’t envisage happening; he decided to move interstate for his career and that didn’t happen until fairly recently. Guy has that swing-man ability to go from back to forward. Last year was probably his break-out year and we certainly thought he’d have another good year in 2017.”
RECRUITS WHO COULD MAKE AN IMPACT:
Experienced forwards: “Anthony Anastasio will certainly fit straight into our forward line with the high work rate and finishing ability we’re aft er inside 50. He and Dylan Conway will bring experience and the success of both having won a premiership with Williamstown in 2015. Robin Nahas will certainly add his experience and star qualities as well, so we think we’ll hit the scoreboard more with those three inside 50.”
Big-bodied midfielders: “We’ve improved our depth in the midfield with bigger-bodied players, which is important to match the AFL-aligned teams. We’d say Isaac Conway would come in and make an impact straight away. Eli Templeton is another one and so is Brodie
Murdoch. With Shane Valenti and Mitch Wooff indin as well, it’ll be pretty hard come selection time because we envisage all those guys will play some pretty serious senior footy.”
BEST-AND-FAIREST CONTENDERS:
“We’d like to think we have some pretty good depth in the midfield. You think about Chris Cain, Toby Pinwill, Shane Valenti and Mitch Wooff indin, and the other we can’t forget is Sam Dwyer who missed most of last year and has had a solid pre-season. Tom O’Sullivan has had a really good pre-season, Nathan Batsanis is another one and Matt Arnot another one.
“Mitch Golby was recruited last year as a midfielder/defender and once he got over his shoulder operation he’s had a pretty good pre-season too. Shannen Lange had a terrific season last year. We want Damian Mascitti to continue playing some really good footy for us across half back.
“And that’s not even mentioning Brody Mihocek, who won our best-and-fairest last year in his first season at the club.”
BREAK-OUT CANDIDATES:
Tom Hobbs: “I’m really keen to see how some of our younger guys who have been around for a little while will go in the coming months. I’m talking about guys like Tom who was a first-year player last year and had a pretty good season (six goals in nine senior games). He’s a medium-sized hit-up forward.”
Lachlan Waddell: “Lachie’s a young ruckman/forward who’s been around for three years now. It’s going to be important for him to step up because, while we’re always looking at our core group of guys who play consistently each week, we’ll only improve through guys like Lachie.”
BIGGEST TEAM STRENGTHS:
“Midfield depth is a traditional strength of ours. You’ve really got to be aiming to win more than 50 per cent of the clearances (Port Melbourne was ranked third for clearances per game during the 2016 H&A season), but it’s also about what our midfielders are doing to assist our forwards and our defenders.”
AREAS FOR IMPROVEMENT FROM 2016:
“We certainly felt we needed to get some goalkickers to the club this year. We were pretty good defensively last year but what happened in the forward half was really disappointing – just not being able to kick a lot of goals. We only averaged 77 points per game (ranked 11th during the H&A season) and you’ll never win a premiership if you’re doing that.
COACHING PANEL CHANGES:
“There have been some coaches who have left and we’ve probably streamlined our coaching group this year. Robin Nahas has come in as a player but he wants to dabble in coaching as well so he’ll be our off ensive coach. Ryan James, who did a really good job with our defensive line last year, will come in as our defensive coach. Trent McMicking, who was our head of development last year, has taken over the Development League coaching role from Lee Rowe.”

2016 BEST AND FAIREST: 1. Tom Wilson / 2. Jason Tutt / 3. Mark Whiley
2016 TEAM OF THE YEAR: Tom Wilson
KEY 2017 INS & OUTS:
- In: Mason Blakey (Northern Knights) / Jake Bradley (Northern Knights) / Alex Browne (CAS suspension) / Liam Buxton (Vermont) / Sam Fowler (Dandenong Stingrays) / Kane Keppel (Eastern Ranges) / Angus Milham (Essendon VFL) / Cameron O’Shea (Port Adelaide AFL) / Fraser Pearce (Port Melbourne) / Michael Romero (Calder Cannons) / Luke Russell (Gold Coast AFL) / Marcus Stavrou (Eastern Ranges) / Ryan Wiggins (Lauderdale)
- Out: Damandeep Aujla (Coburg) / Alex Aurrichio / Brent Bransgrove (retired) / Jack Cripps / Hisham Kerbatieh (Coburg) / Kieran McGuinness (retired) / Fraser Russell / Tim Totevski
DEPARTED PLAYERS WHO’LL BE MISSED:
Kieran McGuinness: “Kieran has retired due to a pretty severe neck injury he suff ered last year against Casey (in Round 5). He’ll be missed for his on-field capabilities but also his off -field leadership.”
Brent Bransgrove: “Brent has also retired – he had a really long career with the Northern Blues (100 games from 2007-16). He’s someone that’s held in very high esteem and someone who – from an on-field and off -field perspective – we’ll definitely miss as well.”
Tim Totevski: “Tim unfortunately suff ered another season-ending knee injury so he’s decided to step away from football for 12 months. We’ll definitely miss Timmy – he’s a very popular figure at the club.”
RECRUITS WHO COULD MAKE AN IMPACT:
Alex Browne (11 AFL games for Essendon from 2011-15): “Alex is raring to go (aft er 12 months out of the game due to suspension). I think the year he’s had off has really given him an appreciation for playing the game and he probably has a slightly diff erent perspective on football now.”
Luke Russell (73 AFL games for Gold Coast from 2011-16) and Cameron O’Shea (81 AFL games for Port Adelaide from 2011-16): “Luke and Cam are guys with some real
natural leadership qualities. Certainly the way they both
prepare and train is a great standard for our younger
players to aspire to.”
BEST-AND-FAIREST CONTENDERS:
“I think what we’ve got this year that we may not have
had in the past is some depth, due to some of the guys
who have signed on with the club this year like Dyson
Stevens, Bailey Jordan, Kye Declase, Tim Jones, Chris
McCabe, Sam Peet, Sam Russell and Zach Ballard.
All those guys have had a taste of senior footy and we’re
looking for them to really stamp their authority on the
competition, along with the big-name signings (Alex
Browne, Luke Russell and Cameron O’Shea – see
above).
“I think our captain Tom Wilson can back up his 2016
season. I don’t see him sliding this year – in fact, I think
we’ll be able to add diff erent parts to his game which will
make him a more damaging player.”
BREAK-OUT CANDIDATES:
Sam Fowler: “Sam’s a small forward out of the
Dandenong Stingrays with some real talent. He’s quick,
he’s clean, he’s got great goal sense and I think he can
apply a lot of front-half pressure for us. He’s certainly got
the smarts and he’s one I’m really excited by.”
Marcus Stavrou: “Marcus is a really interesting player. I
think he’s a super talent. He’s a great size (186cm, 87kg at
the Eastern Ranges last year) and he can play at half back
and go inside the contest as well. I think he’s someone
who’ll definitely add something diff erent to our centre-
bounce structure.”
BIGGEST TEAM STRENGTHS:
“I think we’ve got more versatility. I think our midfield
bats a little bit deeper than it did last year and we’ve got
a small forward in the front half in Sammy Fowler who I
think can do some real damage.
AREAS FOR IMPROVEMENT FROM 2016:
“I think just being far more consistent through games – we
had a number of losses last year where it was really just
10 to 15 minutes of footy that cost us. We want to build
leadership depth and we think we’ve done that from what
we’ve seen in the off -season. We want to ensure that when
things aren’t going our way that we’re able to wrestle the
momentum back and when things are going our way we
can capitalise on it.”
COACHING PANEL CHANGES:
“Matthew Capuano – who’s a development and
academy coach at Carlton – will be our senior midfield
coach at VFL level. (Former Murray Bushrangers head
coach) Darren Ogier will come on board as a backs
coach. Michael Ericson – who’s been our forward line
coach at Development League level for a couple of years
– will become the VFL forwards coach, and Perry Meka
will replace him as Development League forwards coach.
Andrew Williams – who was also with us last year – will
coach the backs at Development League level and also
assist on game day at VFL level.”

Life member Cain helps ‘Call to Arms’Port Melbourne champion Chris Cain will this week earn life membership of the Peter Jackson VFL when he plays his 175th senior match for the Borough in its clash with the Northern Blues at North Port Oval on Saturday.
The 29-year-old’s milestone match coincides with Port
Melbourne’s ‘Call to Arms’ Day, an initiative designed to
encourage supporters to back up the eff orts of players
who will forfeit Round 1 match payments to help the
club’s financial position.
The Borough will run a ‘Show Your Colours’ competition
throughout the aft ernoon in which fans who don their
best club attire will be in the running for prizes as the best
dressed supporters.
Port Melbourne memberships and merchandise will
be available during the day and the club’s post-match
function at the Sandridge Events Centre will be extended
through to around 10.30pm.
“Over the pre-season it came as a bit of a shock to all the
players and the staff that the club was in some financial
trouble,” Cain said on 94.1FM 3WBC’s VFL Rewind program
on Monday night.
“In terms of recouping some of the dollars, the players put
their hands up – as well as the coaches and staff – that
we’d forfeit the Round 1 match payments to assist and
help keep the club afloat.”
The 181cm ex-Oakleigh Chargers midfielder is one of the
most decorated Port Melbourne players of recent times,
having won four VFL Team of the Year selections (2011-14),
three VFL representative guernseys (2012-14), a club best-
and-fairest award (2013) and a senior premiership (2011).
He has also kicked 211 goals in his 174 games to date.

Local Government Forum strengthens football’s future The future of Australian Football in Victoria is bright, following the success of AFL Victoria’s Local Government Forum at Punt Road Oval last week.
More than 90 per cent of Victoria’s Local Councils, along with representatives from other key sporting organisations, were in attendance to discuss future planning for football across the State.
Created in 2013, the biennial event was designed to showcase the strategic direction of football in Victoria and acknowledge the important role that Local Government plays in the development and growth of our game.
Hosted by Nicole Livingstone OAM, representatives heard from key community football presenters about AFL Victoria’s range of programs, designed to increase and strengthen participation in every corner of the state.
AFL General Manager of Football Operations Simon Lethlean, Richmond CEO Brendon Gale, AFL great Matthew Richardson and AFL Women’s stars Alicia Eva and Lauren Arnell were also in attendance to discuss the importance of the health of community football to the development of our game at the elite level.
The 2017 Local Government Forum also saw the launch of AFL Victoria’s 2017–2022 Strategic Plan and the 2017–2022 Football Facilities Development Strategy ‘Growing the Heartland’.
Outlining the direction of Australian Football in Victoria for the next six years, the documents summarise AFL Victoria’s role in facility provision and identify the key strategies to support football at all levels across Victoria.
AFL Victoria CEO Steven Reaper said the Local
Government Forum was integral to the future of
Australian Football in the state.
“The Local Government Forum is a terrific
opportunity for organisations to come together
and share information and best practice regarding
Australian Football as it relates to community
development and local government service
provision,” Reaper said.
“Councils collectively invest millions of dollars
into football annually in the development and
maintenance of football facilities, so it is important to
recognise the role of Local Government in developing
and supporting Australian Football in Victoria.
“AFL Victoria’s and Councils’ own forecasting
predicts a need for nearly 100 new grounds in the
next six years across Victoria, which will cater for the
increased participation levels seen across Victoria.
“By discussing our strategic direction in a forum
such as this, we believe it will enhance our collective
understanding of each other’s needs and plans in
the areas of participation and facilities for more than
410,000 participants in football.”
The 2017 Local Government Forum was made
possible with the support of Richmond Football Club,
Inside EDGE Sport & Leisure Planning, AFL Sports
Ready and Musco Lighting.

Club Notes
GEELONG FALCONS
Week two of the TAC Cup season saw another successful week for the Club, with three wins from three games. Our Under-16 Boys had a great come-from-behind win against Dandenong, with a tight final quarter resulting in an exciting finish.
The TAC Cup Girls and TAC Cup side also had impressive wins, with both teams remaining undefeated through the early rounds. We had Jarrod Walters make his debut for the Club in the TAC Cup on the weekend, and he was very impressive in his first game. Jarrod, the cousin of Hawthorn champion and former Falcon Luke Hodge, is one of a number on our list with famous football bloodlines. In addition to Jarrod, we have Baxter Mensch (son of David – Geelong AFL), Oscar Brownless (son of Billy – Geelong VFL/AFL), Jack Walters (cousin of Patrick Dangerfield – Adelaide/Geelong AFL), Peterson Kol (son of Michael – Geelong VFL), Tom McCartin (brother of Paddy – St Kilda AFL), Cassidy Parish (brother of Darcy – Essendon AFL) and Adam Garner (cousin of Paddy McCartin – St Kilda AFL). These boys are showing great signs as footballers in their own right, and we look forward to seeing their continued development as the year progresses. This Saturday 8 April, we hit the road for the first time this season as we head to Bendigo for a clash with the Murray Bushrangers. We look forward to testing ourselves against another undefeated side. For all updates, please visit the Geelong Falcons Facebook page, our Instagram account (@geelongfalcons) or our twitter account (@geelongfalcons).
GIPPSLAND POWER
This weekend we look forward to our clash with Bendigo Pioneers at Queen Elizabeth Oval. Friday’s
U/16 and U/18 Girls games will be the final game for the two squads. We would also like to thank the contributions from Coach Rhett McLennan and his assistant coaches Dean Duursma, Duncan Ireland and Daniel Brand and team manager Brian Kinder who have done a great job with the U/16’s. Thanks are also owed to Coach Scott McDougal and his assistant coaches Brett Sherriff and Brett Van Berkel and team manager Angie Collins, who have put in tremendous eff ort with our U/18 TAC CUP girls squad. ENGIE Gippsland is once again our major sponsor for the 2017 season, and we remain extremely grateful for their continued generosity and support. We are also delighted to have the magnanimous backing and support of Gippsland Motor Group, Warragul Linen Service, Morwell RSL, Off ice National Warragul and Traralgon, Manny’s Market, South East Podiatry, Medico and Patties Pies. against the Dragons. We look forward to a great contest from both teams this aft ernoon. Also today we have our girls team playing in a double header at Preston City Oval. Congratulations to our Knights Girls who won their second straight game last week against the Dragons. The Knights would like to thank Technika, a leading producer of high quality kitchen & laundry appliances, for their 6th year as Major Sponsor of the Club. We thank them for their generous ongoing support of the talent pathway in the Northern Metropolitan Region.
CALDER CANNONS
The Calder Cannons U18 TAC Cup girls will start their Round 4 fixture with Oakleigh at 12pm before the Cannons U18 TAC Cup boys pursue their first win of the
season taking on Oakleigh Chargers at RAMS Arena at 3pm. This weeks ‘Drive to a Game’ round is a special feature in the 2017 fixture, enticing critical conversations between parents and young drivers on the importance of completing the 120 hour log book, night time driving and wet weather practice. The ‘Drive to a Game’ campaign will be represented at RAMS Arena with grass signage, specialised coff ee cups and media across the aft ernoon. We also encourage all learner drivers both boys and girls, to put on the ‘L’ plates and drive to their respective games this weekend. Keep an eye out on promotional material and social media to see what is happening across the state! Tune in on twitter @CalderCannonsFC, Facebook at Calder Cannons, and Instagram @caldercannonsfc to ensure you get the latest news, events, photos and stories. The Cannons are also in the news every Wednesday night on 98.9 North West FM’s Pathway to the Top from 5pm-6pm. Go the mighty Cannons!
EASTERN RANGES
The TAC Cup boys will be looking to bounce back this Sunday in Preston against the Northern Knights. Aft er a disappointing
performance against Oakleigh last week, we’ll be hoping for a turn around in form. The TAC Cup Girls however fared better, convincing winners over Oakleigh at Frankston last week, taking them to a 2-1 record for the season so far. Our U16 Patton Squad began their Carnival up against Sandringham Dragons, check the TAC Cup websites for all the results. Congratulations to our TAC Cup boys who have been named as part of the Level 2 AFL Academy: Joel Garner, Sam Hayes and Jaidyn Stephenson. Remember to follow us across social media and our website to keep up to date with everything Ranges: www.easternranges.aflvic.com.au, facebook.com/eastern.ranges, @eastern_ranges on Twitter and @easternranges on Instagram. OAKLEIGH CHARGERS
A massive turnaround in eff ort and application saw our group bounce back from a disappointing Round One eff ort, and record a solid win against the Eastern Ranges last Sunday. It was pleasing to see the playing group learn from the previous weeks eff ort, take on board feedback from the coaching group and put it
into practice on match day. This eff ort should be seen as a benchmark of what is expected on a weekly basis, and an eff ort we continue to build on. Congratulations to our two debutants last week, Will Golds and Xavier O’Neill who acquitted themselves well in their first taste of TAC Cup football. Our win on the weekend did come at a cost, with Vice-Captain Noah Answerth going down with a serious back injury, and we wish Noah all the best and a speedy recovery. A big thanks to our 2017 sponsors, our major partner, Bendigo Bank Murrumbeena, Camp Australia, Camberwell Toyota, Mulgrave Country Club and Concept Logistics.
WESTERN JETS
The Western Jets welcome the Sandringham Dragons to Burbank Oval for our Round 3 TAC Cup match. Today marks a big day for both
Clubs with the TAC Drive to a Game campaign being implemented by both squads. Every player from both teams who is on their Learners license will be driving to Williamstown today to gain more experience on the road striving to complete 120 hours of practice to ensure that we aim for Towards Zero on our roads. Each year the Western Jets have wonderful support from our player sponsors of both the TAC Cup Squad and the Brad Johnson Under 16 Squad. Thank-you to the following sponsors for their support in 2017: Westside Meats Australia (Buku Khamis), Bill Jacobs Pty Ltd (Tristan Rudic), Western Highway Honda (Cameron Rayner), Michael Crawford Funerals (Jack Crawford), Able Industries Engineering Pty Ltd (James Martyn & Riley Ham), Riverglen Holiday Park (Blake Souter), Automation Now (James Elkington), JAL Fitness (Darren Walters), Werribee Electrical Contracting Service (Joshua Mould), Ferguson Plarre Bakehouse (Lachlan Smart), JayThom Pty Ltd (Thomas Yorgey) and A & C Plumbing (Connor Thar). Please remember to check our website (westernjets.aflvic.com.au), Facebook page (Western Jets FC), Twitter page (@WesternJetsFC) and Instagram (@westernjetsfc) for up to date vision, information and scores.
MURRAY BUSHRANGERS
Last weekend three teams travelled to IKON park to play Gippsland Power. All three matches were competitive games with wins
to our TAC Cup Under 18 girls and boys whilst in the Under 16’s Gippsland Power were too strong for the Bushies. Thank you Gippsland Power for helping coordinate the transition of venues and other operations. This weekend we travel to Bendigo for the final match of the Under 16 Victorian Country Challenge, Round 4 of the TAC Cup Girls and Round 3 for the TAC Cup boys. It’s important to recognise all of our families who have supported the players with their travel commitments which started back in November. For some players and their families the time spent travelling is significant. Our committed group of support staff and coaches also deserved recognition for their dedication and travel. Last Wednesday night our TAC Cup girls and boys squads participated in the REACH Foundation presentation that highlighted the importance of strong leadership. The overwhelming feedback was positive and engaging. We look forward to the games this weekend and thank you to the Bendigo Pioneers and Stephen Sharp for assisting the program so far. The ongoing support of - YARRAWONGA MULWALA GOLF CLUB RESORT, AFL SPORTSREADY, DYSONS, DUNSTANS CONSTRUCTION GROUP, RELIANCE PARTNERS, SEYMOUR MCDONALDS, BYRNE REMOVALISTS AND STORAGE AND THALES is greatly appreciated. Please support these local businesses when the opportunity presents. Good luck to all teams this weekend.
