After a 31 year dry spell, then winning the Alberton League’s 2011 Grand Final, in September this year Kilcunda-Bass Football Club’s Seniors took out back-to-back flags with a win over Dalyston. No doubt it’s all smiles in the Bass Hills and Waterline District where most of the club’s members reside. The final result saw Kilcunda-Bass 12.17.89 defeat Dalyston 11.4.70. Premiers for 2012
KILCUNDA-BASS has gone back-to-back, taking out the 2012 Alberton Premiership by 19 points over Dalyston on Saturday 15 September, 2012. Grand final hype was definitely about on the day and Dalyston kicked with a slight breeze in the first quarter. The teams went goal for goal in the first quarter despite the Panthers getting more of the ball in their forward line. A number of offline shots meant that the Panthers failed to get the early lead they had hoped for.
It was a very tough game with both sides giving it their all, while players on both teams were touchy early on as old rivalries were shown. The game got physical midway through the quarter with Peter Dunlop and Jason Wells having a disagreement in the Panthers' forward line. Dunlop was yellow carded for the incident and umpire Peter McLean finally managed to break up the feud. The Panthers were looking strong early and, with more accurate kicking, could have put the game away with 10 scoring shots, however, they only managed three majors. Dalyston only managed two goals for the quarter but still kept in touch.
An early Panthers’ goal started the second quarter and Dalyston quickly returned fire. The midfielders were working overtime with the ball spending a lot of time in the middle. After a tough push by Dalyston into their forward line, Jackson Brooker managed a magnificent kick from a tight angle under pressure to bounce through an open goal and spark his team. This also sparked a second dust-up - this time between Dalyston star forward Steve Pimm and Panther Dylan Shepherd. Team mates came to break up the encounter and Shepherd was awarded a yellow card for his actions.
Matt Hendry was earning his stripes in the ruck against his larger Magpie opponent Rogan Jennings. The clearances were helping the Panthers and quick work from a Dalyston turnover awarded Kilcunda-Bass another goal. Pinn returned fire with a set shot from in front just before the siren. His celebrations sparked another brawl as the teams headed into the rooms for half time. The scores stood at 54 to 30 and Dalyston needed to lift.
The Magpies came out a different side in the third, working hard and
pushing forward. The whole team had lifted and were sending the ball forward every chance they had. Benefiting from a Panthers lack of judgment Dalyston crumbed the ball at half back and after a good succession Peter Dunlop marked in front of goal. This resulted in a goal and the Magpies were on a roll. Another goal to Rosendale had the margin at seven points and another Dalyston goal had them only one point away from the lead. A Luke James scissor kick out of nowhere put the Panthers back in front by seven points at three quarter time.
At the start of the premiership quarter, it was anyone's game. A quick behind and then another goal to Rosendale meant the scores were tied early in the last. The crowd was on edge and the Panthers weren't giving up that easily. A free kick to Kilcunda-Bass' Tim Smith 25 metres out from the goals gave the Panthers a six point lead. A Dalyston behind followed, then a Smith to James succession saw another goal extend the lead out to 11 points. With most of the play in the Panthers' forward line, the hope for Dalyston was slipping away. Another few behinds added to the margin when a Luke James screamer on the goal line followed by a goal was the icing on the cake for the Panther boys. Supporters flooded the field on the siren to celebrate with the dual premiership team.

Corinella CFA Scores New Equipment
The Corinella Country Fire Authority (CFA) recently applied for three community grants offered by the Bass Coast Shire Council and were successful in all three grants.
One of the items is a new computer which will enable brigade members to receive the latest video and/or audio information on location when attending emergencies. Tracy Jenner, pictured right, demonstrates how the computer will be used when out in the field.
The brigade’s new light-weight, portable generator (being held by
Brandon Shell showing its portability) can be adapted and used for both 12V and 240V purposes. Generators of this nature have developed in leaps and bounds over the past few decades. They are amazingly quiet, ergonomically friendly and operate virtually on the smell of an oily rag.
Some new radio handsets were also received (shown left by the members). These will provide a much-needed safety link to members when out and about fighting fires in dense scrubland. Ed.
Pictured left are Corinella CFA members at their Sunday meeting . From left to right they are Steve Dench, Alan Galvin, Mick Hamilton, Brandon Shell (new recruit), Tracy Jenner and Warren Thurgood. Ed.
The Bass Valley Community Group Inc. Committee of Management would like thank Clare Le Serve who is stepping down as President after 30 years of service. She will be sorely missed. Mon to Thurs: 9am - 3:30pm Friday: 9am - 3pm Deadline for Bass Valley News inclusions - 20th of the month
Hi to my readers. I mentioned last month that I had reformatted September’s newsletter for a reason. This was so I could enter a special edition in the annual newspaper competition run by the Community Newspaper Association of Victoria. I didn’t particularly want to let on in September that this was a special edition out of the ordinary, as this might have swayed the judges’ thinking. However, in
preparing the entries for Best 12 page newsletter, Best Layout and Best Sports Reporting, I found out that September’s 12 page edition entry is not eligible until next year. So I had to hunt around for a suitable edition to enter in this year’s competition. Oh well, I won’t have to panic next year now will I?
The new format has had a warm reception and it looks like I will be sticking with this. I still have a number of issues with the programs I use but with new software on the way, hopefully I will get everything sorted out over the coming months. Ed.

THE CAUSE: The Catholic Parishes of Korumburra/Loch and Leongatha are working together to solve a shortage of fresh water in the village of Ochobo in Nigeria - the home of Fr Joseph Abutu who is one of our assistant priests. A Project Ochobo team has been formed to enable the people of South Gippsland to assist in improving the quality of life of the villagers in Ochobo. The dry season remains very challenging as these people need to walk several kilometres to collect water from wells which tend to dry up and become more polluted towards the end of the long dry
season. Some of the villagers’ bodies build up a degree of immunity but diseases remain a very real problem. Typhoid, cholera and dysentery are common and the sick and elderly are unable to walk as far to the wells. The Project Ochobo team is committed to providing a sustainable, clean water supply to the village of Ochobo. As one of our fundraising initiatives, we are running an old fashioned car rally on Sunday 21 October. WHAT CAN YOU DO? Firstly, you can go and visit our website at www.projectochobo.org.au and view the photos of the village of Ochobo. Then, why not come along and enjoy the fun on the inaugural South Gippsland Scenic Car Tour? For further information contact Ken Loughnan on 0408 813 388 or Di Stewart on 5657 7336.

NEWS AROUND THE TOWNS
Bass Coast Community Health Service (BCCHS) staff were the excited recipients of a new Transit bus which was generously donated by San Remo District Financial Services. The bus will help BCCHS achieve its ongoing mission to provide access to the Bass Coast community with quality, responsive community health and primary care services. The bus will assist BCCHS’s popular Planned Activity Group (PAG) to deliver important regular outings that encourage social inclusion and meaningful activities for older people with a disability.
San Remo District Financial Services Ltd (SRDFS) is the community owned company that operates the three Bendigo Bank Community Bank franchises: San Remo, Cowes, and Grantville & District. The company is
managed by a Board of Directors with Terry Ashenden as the Chairman. The Board members are all volunteers.
SRDFS returns 80% of its profits to the community as grants and 20% to shareholders as dividends.
Up until June 2012 more than $600,000 has been given back to the local community by SRDFS with a further $128,000 to Shareholders. $130,000 has already been put into the Community Foundation for next year’s Grants Program.
SRDFS was delighted to be able to provide over $50,000 to purchase the new bus for BCCHS, built to specific requirements for use by BCCHS to support the local community. The bus carries the BCCHS and Community Bank signage and demonstrates the important relationship that Community Health and the Community Bank shareholders have developed. It is a proud symbol of the power of people supporting our valued local services.

Woman: Is there a problem, Officer? Officer: Ma'am, you were speeding. Woman: Oh, I see. Officer: Can I see your license please? Woman: I don't have one. Lost it 4 times. Officer: I see. Can I please see your rego papers? Woman: I can't do that. Officer: Why not? Woman: I stole this car and killed the owner. His body parts are in the trunk. The officer looks at the woman, slowly backs away to his car and calls for back up. Within minutes, four police cars circle the car. A senior officer slowly approaches the car, clasping his half drawn gun. Officer 2: Ma'am, could you step out of the vehicle! Woman: Is there a problem sir? Officer 2: One of my officers told me that you have stolen this car and that you murdered the owner. Woman: Murdered the owner? Officer 2: Yes, could you please open the trunk. The woman opens the trunk, revealing nothing in there. Officer 2: Is this your car, ma'am? Woman: Yes, here are the registration papers. The first officer is stunned. Officer 2: One of my officers claims that you do not have a driving license. The woman digs into her handbag and pulls out her purse and hands it to the officer. The officer snaps open the purse and examines the license. He looks quite puzzled. Officer 2: Thank you ma'am, one of my officers told me you didn't have a license, that you stole this car and that you murdered the owner. Woman: Betcha the lying bugger told you I was speeding too.

MARU KOALA & ANIMAL PARK
OCTOBER 2012 PAGE 10
Save our Koalas Friday 28 September was ‘Save the Koala Day’ as promoted
by the Australian Koala Foundation (AKF). Whilst exact koala numbers in the Australian wild vary according to which source you take them from, credible koala surveys conducted by the AKF put wild koala numbers at below 80,000. This is a far cry from the millions of koalas that inhabited Australia during the last century.
Koala numbers were greatly diminished when they were hunted and shot for their fur - which was largely traded. Public outcry led to the government making koalas a protected native species and they can no longer be hunted. However, their numbers are still under threat. Koala distribution and survival is
dependent on suitable habitats, which have been widely wiped out in many areas, leaving the koala population very fragmented. Koalas are now only found along the east coast of Australia with strong habitat corridors, hence they are abundant in Victoria. Substantial habitat loss and population loss has occurred along the coast of New South Wales and Queensland and even less numbers remain in South Australia. Factors inhibiting the koala population
not only include habitat loss by land clearing but diseases such as Chlamydia (causing sterility), inbreeding in small or isolated areas of built up populations, attack by feral animals and being hit and killed by cars on busy roads near koala habitat areas. New South Wales and Queensland have listed the koala as ‘vulnerable’ in recognition of the need to ensure we protect and maintain suitable koala habitats and thus secure koala numbers in the wild. Find out more at www.savethekoala.com
Dreamnight at the Zoo 2012 In November we will host our 7th annual Dreamnight. This is
a free night for special needs children and their families from right across the Gippsland region. The night is staffed and run totally by volunteers and paid for with donations. Maru does not profit from the evening as the management sees this night as a way to give back to the local community. Entry to Dreamnight is strictly by invitation only but if you have or know special needs children that you would like to be invited, contact your health provider or support group as they should have an invitation for you on our behalf. But if not then feel free to contact us direct on 5678 8548.

~ Miranda Sage ~ Candidate for Anderson Ward
I am standing for the Anderson Ward in the Bass Coast Council Elections. From 2000 to 2003 I had the privilege of serving this community as Councillor, including one year as Mayor. I learnt so much during that time and now I wish to build on that knowledge and experience. I undertake to represent the best interests of the
community and have the time to do this. I believe that community involvement is vital to enable Councillors to make good decisions.
I am standing as an unaligned candidate, able to make independent decisions, and with no conflict of interest.
My promise is to bring to Council a reasonable and balanced view that reflects the ideas and aspirations of our community. I believe that there are exciting opportunities for the community, Councillors, and Council staff to work together to produce great outcomes.
I would like to see the Shire actively working to attract new industries and employment opportunities in this post-desal time. We have wonderful resources with natural gas, water, land, and most importantly, people who are ready and able to work.
Bass Coast is the fastest growing regional Shire in Victoria. Council needs to be responsive to the needs of our towns as they develop. Adequate public transport, road networks and access to education and community facilities for residents of Kilcunda, Dalyston, South Dudley, North Wonthaggi, San Remo and Newhaven are very important in Anderson Ward and across the Shire of Bass Coast.
Tourism, economic development and the environment are all closely interconnected and need to be managed sustainably and sensitively. A close look at the State Government’s proposed changes to the Rural Zones is required before implementation to maximise the benefits to our rural community. Proposed changes to residential zones can be implemented to protect the neighbourhood character of our towns.
The new section of the Phillip Island Road at Anderson will create major traffic issues in San Remo, Newhaven and beyond. The intersection to and from Wonthaggi is inadequate and possibly unsafe. Council needs to effectively lobby VicRoads and the State Government to address these problems. Miranda Sage values your vote and will represent you with
integrity and empathy.

VICTORIA LINE
~ About Waterproofing ~ Line-X protective coating products are a range of sprayed-on polyurethane/polyurea elastomers that provide a flexible and tenacious bond to metal, wood, concrete and fibreglass substances.
Elastomers remain flexible from minus 40º C to 160º degrees C and provide excellent resistance to abrasion, impact, corrosion and chemicals.
Coatings can be applied in thickness from 1mm to over 50mm, if required, including vertical and overhead surfaces. The seamless membrane can be handled or walked on within 30 seconds of application.
Drying to touch within 10 seconds, it provides full and unrestricted use within 24 hours or less and the products can stretch to accommodate expansion and contraction of the substrate without adhesion loss.
Physical properties demonstrate a tensile strength from 1500psi to 6600psi and 70+ ‘shore’ hardness to allow application in harsh environments such as the mining, civil construction and transport industries.
Line-X is 100% solids by weight and volume, containing no solvents or styrene, which make this product suitable for potable water transfer as well as many applications in the food processing industries.
In total cost analysis, factoring asset protection, life span and minimal downtime in application, Line-X products provide a most cost effective solution for protection of most forms of plant, equipment and building substrates.
