Prompts: 1. What IS architecture? 2. What does architecture DO?
3. What SHOULD architecture do? (A tougher quesBon)
1
In 1999, Architecture for Humanity was founded [by Kate Stohr and Cameron Sinclair] to advocated what WE think architecture should do – deliver safe, sustainable and inspiraBonal design soluBons EVERYWHERE in the world, including communiBes that do not have access or can’t afford design.
2
Whereas most architecture firms are hired by clients to build what’s requested, we recruit these architects as volunteers to work with communiBes – find out and respond to their needs to become more educated, healthy or resilient against disasters.
3
We call these volunteer architects “Design Fellows.” They live and work directly with villages and neighborhoods around the world on 6-‐12 month “Tours of Duty,” developing design soluBons and overseeing construcBon of community centers, schools, clinics and more. By 2012 we’ve worked in 44 countries, from HaiB to Sri Lanka to the United States, and have 4 offices and 64 Chapter affiliates in 22 countries. But our work always comes back to intense, community-‐focused collaboraBon. We believe local wisdom guides the best design–and that designs don’t count if they’re not built. We also believe in hiring local talent and builders, sharing wisdom, and leaving behind not just a strong project, but the skills and abiliBes to build more of them. We’re making beber construcBon go viral.
