HD news acquisition systems range from 25 to 100Mbps

– Higher bitrate CODECS are intraframe = easier to edit

– Lower bitrate  CODECS may require longer render times

Consumer and Prosumer CODECS are notoriously math intensive and can require  very long decode/encode cyclse

Bitrate Impact on Storage Cost

The maximum RTIO of a storage system is the sum of all the individual disc RTIO

Effective delivery of frames to editors from storage has bitrate dependencies.The editor reads and writes in fixed size data blocks

– Editors designed to run on shared storage use big blocks (i.e. 512kb as opposed to 64k)

Higher bitrates require more reads of the same sized block.That means higher bitrates require more discs
