Real people can’t afford either one!Scaling a system starts with getting real

The 3 Laws of Realistic Systems
Bits cost money
News operations add value to bits
The proper system scale is a function of the end l f h bvalue of the bits minus
the cost

Your camcorder selection affects the cost of your end‐to‐end system
Start at the Beginning with the Cost Per Bit
HD news acquisition systems range from 25 to 100Mbps
– Higher bitrate CODECS are intraframe = easier to edit
– Lower bitrate CODECS may require longer render times
Consumer and Prosumer CODECS are notoriously math intensive and can require very long decode/encode cyclse

One spinning disk has a fixed limit on how many reads it can do per second (RTIO)
Bitrate Impact on Storage Cost
The maximum RTIO of a storage system is the sum of all the individual disc RTIO
Effective delivery of frames to editors from storage has bitrate dependencies. The editor reads and writes in fixed size data blocks
– Editors designed to run on shared storage use big blocks (i.e. 512kb as opposed to 64k)
Higher bitrates require more reads of the same sized block. That means higher bitrates require more discs

Media operations – required additions:
Special tuning of the read/write processSpecial tuning of the read/write process
Specialized buffering and pre-fetching
Enhanced on the fly error correction
Packaging of multi-track essence
Characterizing the storage performance for production use
Optimizing the application layer to read/write efficiently and deterministically
Measuring bandwidth performance by individual LUNs, servers, and controllers

Simple “edit only” system (no ingest or playout)
10 full resolution editors
RTIO Example
Assume three streams (layers) per editor
@35MbpsMaximum load = 240 RTIO (editor works in 512k blocks)
Requires 18 7.2K RPM SAS drives in RAID 5
– 1 fully populated 12 drive LUNy p p
– 1 half populated LUN
Configured storage cost = $41,700

Simple “edit only” system (no ingest or playout)
10 full resolution editors
RTIO Example
Assume three streams (layers) per editor
@100MbpsMaximum load = 542 RTIO (editor works in 512k blocks)
Requires 18 15K RPM SAS drives in RAID 5
– 1 fully populated 12 drive LUNy p p
– 1 half populated LUN
Configured storage cost = $84,100
