Gus Leunig

Gus’ detailed, colourful and poetic works encapsulate his love of nature, animals and life in the country, where he spent most of his childhood. His seemingly simplistic figures exist in complex worlds and narratives where the whimsical stories that play out on canvas represent complex maps from the Atlas of Gus’ imagination. The carefully crafted and resolved detail create colourful journeys through a world of observation and playful insight which leaves the viewer with fulfilment and intrigue, where a new day or mood can allow different story lines to unfold. Gus’ professional career as an artist launched in 2009 with a sell out show at Art Sydney, followed by yearly successes in his solo exhibitions at Libby Edward’s gallery in Melbourne, and recently a successful showing at the Design Files showcase. Gus is regularly approached for commissions small and large.

In 2004, Gus spent time in the small aboriginal community, Lockhart River at the very northern tip of Cape York Peninsula. Spending time in the Arts Centre alongside local Aboriginal artists was a major turning point in his approach and enjoyment of his art, which still influences his work today.

Animal Friends is a collaborative collage project by New York-based artists Adam Frezza & Colin Douglas Gray. The duo utilises hand-cut paper collage culled from a vast collection of both popular and esoteric published source material. Each piece is simultaneously humorous, playful, curious, and beautiful. Begun in 2009, with Colin and Adam as co-workers at a Manhattan art supply shop, the collages quickly developed from a way to kill time at work into an impressive and established series. In the fall of 2010 the duo was commissioned by the New York Post to create a large format fold out poster spread, introducing digital source material to their process. This commission introduced the idea of creating digital prints of their hand-made efforts to a wider audience in a series of editioned professional prints. Limited prints are now available for the first time release at Van Rensburg Galleries Affordable Art Fair Hong Kong.

Charlie Sheard

Επαµεροι. τι δε τις; τι δ ου τις; σκιας οναρ Ανθρωπος. Creatures of a day! What is someone? What is someone not? Man is the dream of a shadow.                                                        Pindar, Pythian Ode 8, 95/96   The Aitia (from the Greek Αιτια, meaning causes or origins) was a long poem written by the Hellenistic poet Kallimakos (Καλλιµαχος) in the third century BCE. The Aitia opened with the poet’s description of a dream in which he was transported to Mount Helicon and tutored in secret knowledge by the Muses. The poem was developed from there into a catalogue of the origins of ancient myths, customs and religious mysteries. Kallimakos was interested in complex techniques, rare narratives, unusual words, and in surprising combinations of effect; his poem engaged with other important Greek literary texts by means of quotation, allusion and commentary. In supplying complex elaboration of the origins of both religious practice and of art, Kallimakos reminded his reader that the work of art is divine in origin, a reminder as timely today as it was in the third century BCE.    Whilst I have been preparing this body of work, my mother has been terminally ill; I have been constantly reminded in other ways too of the frailty of our condition, of the vanity and transience of human affections, and that life is really just a very short dream. Kallimakos dreamed of the Muses; almost everything he dreamt is lost. A few surviving fragments are all that is left of his Aitia, even though it was one of the most widely read and influential of all poems in the classical world. My new paintings are my Aitia, songs of origins and of endings.   I met Beijing artist Huqinwu several years ago in Sydney, when he was visiting for his solo exhibition at Stella Downer Gallery. We have become close friends, because we have surprisingly similar ideas about painting and culture. Huqinwu has been inviting me to come to Beijing for two years. When I saw him again in Sydney earlier this year, he renewed his invitation, which I finally decided to accept. I have been here for a month.   These watercolours were painted here in Huqinwu's studio at the edge of Beijing, where I lived alone for a couple of weeks. There is no heating in Huqinwu's studio and it was extremely cold. This brought back very strong memories of my winters as a young artist, thirty years ago, when I lived in a large studio without heating in Cambridge (England). While I was painting, these memories led me to contemplate both the passing of time and my own mortality.   I have a long-standing interest in Chinese painting, particularly in painting from the Song and Yuan dynasties, in the early paintings at Dunhuang, and in the history and development of Chinese Landscape painting. I have been visiting China regularly for the last ten years in order to study these models closely. The new paintings in this small exhibition are pure abstraction, but they reflect my interest in the history of Chinese painting.

Tami Bahat is a fine art photographer whose passion lies in molding the obvious into the extraordinary. She strives to push the boundaries of her own imagination, as well as the viewer's, by creating bold works of art from striking perspectives. Lost in time, she finds inspiration in the lighting of Caravaggio, the realism of Degas, in the expression of Rembrandt.   Born in Israel to a dancer and a graphic artist, Tami’s family resettled in Los Angeles when she was quite young. Her upbringing was non-judgemental and nurturing, with parents who unconditionally supported her artistic passions. A series of family trips around the world exposed Tami to humanity as a whole, the myriad of ways that people live life. She also developed a keen awareness of the loss and struggle that an earthly existence brings, an undertone in much of her work.   Tami currently resides in Los Angeles, dedicating her life to photographic art.

Second Skins is presented as a follow up of a former collection named Skins. It deals with two connected photography series that both include portraits of people who try to search for the internal side of being human, but from dealing with different aspects are willing to unveil the intimate self of a human being. While the previous collection represents the same person doing different kinds of work, intending to reflect about individual choices at a stand point in life, Second Skins photographs people with animal faces that have the same purpose. It shows a series of possible personalities that may be within our reach, that may be imposed, or that may be adopted according to circumstances. The images that made up this series try to isolate the character: obviating its context and its references only based on being individual. While the name used as the collection title specifies the order in the series, in reality it is more than an answer to a sequence. It is word game. Second Skins suggests options, possibilities and ultimately choices. Roots is the third of a photography series that follows up Skins: a previous reflection about identity, existence and individual choice. The photographs show bodies with seasonal plants and floral bouquets replacing human heads. The human body represents the stem, and the head represents the flora, while the hidden root is linked to the earth: the starting point and destination, the beginning and end of life. The root is the base of our existence that conditions the direction of our path. The term root indicates belonging, bonding, base, and nourishment. In the present collection there is an initial search for identity. It is added to the human context whether that is social, cultural, economic or kin. This concept is one of the quests that indirectly determines human choices and the search for the authentic self. The photographs uncover a specific image through the plants and flowers that show the present moment. It may be current time or a defined time, or perhaps it represents only what we wish to show, which is not what we really are. It is interesting how this collection’s title points precisely to the unseen element but nevertheless represents the support of the self; therefore all photographs are shot from a mid-plane-take hiding the lower part of the stem from which the roots start. Root searches once more in human nature for “what we believe we are, what others think we are, what we really are and what we would like to be”, demonstrating that there is a reason for these beings to sprout from the root. Root is the third of four photographic series that reflect on the questions surrounding human choices to confront the real self, the self that could be myself, and the self that is definitely myself.
