Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, Happy Mardi Gras, and Welcome to Winter!!! Hope all enjoyed their holidays with family and friends. Even with the wintry blasts of weather we can still think about the garden! So, come to the Gulf District Mid-Winter Workshop, always a source of good ‘rose growing’ information. Our own SWLA Rose Society member, Steve Roussell will give a seminar on hybridizing. We’ve seen his lovely, fragrant seedlings at our meetings! Come, learn more! Receive Consulting Rosarian credits, hear the latest on the American Rose Center Gardens Renovations, and, in particular, the Gulf District Gardens restoration, newly planted with David Austin Roses. And, it’s always a fun gathering with fellow ro-sarians! Fellow SWLA Rose Society member, and local watercolorist, Carol Saunders will be a part of the latest Exhibition at the Old City Hall. Mark your Calendars! Yes, it’s cold outside, but there are many gardening related opportunities to enjoy! Fuel for the spirit even if you need a coat!

Golden Triangle Rose Society is hosting it’s annual Rose Seminar, Saturday, January 20 9AM — Noon. Always a great seminar with good speakers on the topics we rosarians want hear! Check it out! GTRS will also host a Judging School in June. (More details later) Some of the Gulf District Judges will be helping with the classes. An excellent learning experience

Botanical Art & Illustration from the Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation will be on display in

the second floor gallery through March 24. The Hunt Institute specializes in the history of botany. It acquires and maintains authoritative collections of books, plant images, manuscripts, portraits and data

files, and provides publications and other modes of information service. The Institute meets the refer-ence needs of botanists, biologists, historians, conservationists, librarians, bibliographers and the public

at large, especially those concerned with any aspect of the North American flora.

The Hunt Institute established the International Exhibition of Botanical Art & Illustration series in 1964.

Every three years, this series features the works of talented botanical artists from around the world. This exhibition is a compilation from the artworks in the 15th International series (2016) and features

artworks by 38 artists who are citizens of 14 countries. Local artist Carol Saunders is featured in this

Winter in the Garden There’s no doubt it’s winter—snow and freezing temperatures! Roses don’t seem to mind all our strange weather extremes this year! Remember roses grow in Alaska, China! Yes, lush, new red growth will freeze if not protected, but the bush survives! Yes, the weight of snow on large branch-es may cause the loss of a cane or two, but the bush survives! The winds come and go, and so do disease and pests but the bush survives! A real testament to why roses have been around for thousands of years and are so loved! And the Rosarian finds gratitude in the cold temps to kill off pests and disease, and cold provides a break in the spray routine. So now we have a chance to make a few plans for spring in the rose garden. Can’t you just see all the blooms this spring! So let’s prepare for that first flush of blooms. When the weather warms, what changes do I want to make? New roses means new beds or just making space in the landscape. What’s in store for your garden? Start your roses off with an early dose of Dormant Oil & Contact Fungicide to kill any lingering pests and disease. Spray at least twice, another time or two, if roses are badly infected with black spot or downy mildew. Plan on using some systemic products to help control diseases early on during the rapid growth bushes will sustain once the temps rise. Many products are avail-able in both granular form and liquid to treat bushes and fertilize at the same time. Here are sever-al products and by no means all, several different brands, both organic and not, all availa-ble locally or online. Check out websites for products that suit your need: size of your garden and pocket book, time you have to devote to gardening and the hopes you have for your roses. Here are a few sites to check out: gulfdistrictrose.org, domyown.com, and all the brand names have a website with product labels and costs. ARS (ars.org) endorses certain products; check those out, too, for references. Ask a local Consulting Rosarian (swla rose society has 3 active and 3 emeri-tus. Ann Wehner, Susan Burke, Julie Engert, Rita Hudgins, Barbara & Buford Alston). MicroLife is

an organic fertilizer some have used, Espoma for Roses is another good organic product, some prefer granular type (8-8-8, 13-13-13)) or water soluble (Miracle Gro, RapidGro), also the time-release type. Important to remember that the useable life of the fertilizer varies ac-cording to type and weather. Use what works for your garden! But, use it! Your roses will thank you with beautiful blooms! See you soon! Good Gardening!
