Affec%ve  News  and  Electronic  Elsewheres

Mobility  and  Priva%za%on  Mobile  (narra%ves)    (Farman,  2012)  – Enabled/sustained  by  mobile  devices  – Geo-­‐social    • Help  “conceptualise  individuals’  physical,  psychological  and/or  social  connec%ons  to  par%cular  geographic  territory  without  necessarily  loca%ng  them  within  these  physical  spaces”  (Hess,  2013).

Liminality  and  Affect  LIMINALITY:  a  posi%on  of  social  and  structural  ambiguity,  or  as  “the  Nay  to  all  posi%ve  structural  asser%ons,  but  as  in  some  sense  the  source  of  them  all,  and,  more  than  that,  as  a  realm  of  pure  possibility  whence  novel  configura%ons  of  ideas  and  rela%ons  may  arise”  (Turner,1967,  p.  97).        AFFECT:  a  prepersonal  intensity  corresponding  to  the  passage  from  one  experien%al  state  of  the  body  to  another  and  implying  an  augmenta%on  or  diminu%on  in  that  body's  capacity  to  act    (Deleuze  &  Guagari,  1987/1980  )  

Affec%ve  news  streams  :news  collabora%vely  constructed  out  of  subjec%ve  experience,  opinion,  and  emo%on  all  sustained  by  and  sustaining  ambient  news  environments.  We  may  understand  affec%ve  news  as  the  product  of  hybrid  news  values  and  ambient,  always-­‐on  news  environments.  Affec%ve  news  streams  blend  fact,  opinion,  and  sen%ment  to  the  point  where  discerning  one  from  the  other  is  difficult,  and  doing  so  misses  the  point.  Characterized  by  premedia%on,  affec%ve  news  streams  may  be  filled  with  an%cipatory  gestures  that  are  not  predic%ve  of  the  future,  but  communicate  a  predisposi%on  to  frame  it,  and  in  doing  so,  lay  claim  to  latent  forms  of  agency  that  are  also  affec%ve  and  networked.      :sustain  electronic  elsewheres  discursively  render  spaces  where  the  long-­‐disconnected  publics  of  ci%zens  and  journalists  may  reconnect      :  reflec%ve  of  a  digital  orality
