    RIDE THE ASIAN WAVE

    EditorsNote

One of the great things our late founding father, Mr Lee Kwan Yew, did

was to champion Asian countries. He travelled tirelessly all over theworld to sell how great Singapore and our neighbouring countries

were, making other world leaders sit up and pay attention to these Asian

    igers.

Fast-forward to today, and the Asian flag is still flying high with a new generation of

Asian brands dominating the beauty industry. Tanks to the kawaii Japanese brands and

sizzling hot Korean wave, even big-time industry players like LOreal Paris have signed on

model Soo Joo Park as its latest and first Asian American spokesmodel!

Tis issue, we celebrate all things Asian showcasing need-to-know brands that are

dominating the beauty scene here and globally. First up, check our special, Ride Te

Asian Wave (page 67) and find out what the must-do treatments are and the beauty

    innovations you need to know!

New to aesthetic treatments and keen to give it a try? Ten our article, Should You Get

Fillers (page 44) is a must-read. Alternatively, we show you how you can look 10 years

younger immediately (and without needles!) in our Hair Masterclass (page 25). We

believe that looking good is more than just beauty treatments, that is why we have invited

wellness experts to share with us a possibly revolutionary diet that may alleviate diseases

(Why You Should Eat Like A Caveman, page 86) and the Five Yoga Poses Women Should

Do (page 84) by premier women-only yoga studio, Lava Yoga from Japan.

Like what you see? Ten, dont forget to like our Facebook page (www. facebook.com/

aestheticsandbeauty) where we give away beauty products from leading brands like

Shiseido and Laniege because we like our fans too! Hope you enjoy this issue as much

as we had fun putting it together! Do drop me a note at [email protected] to

share your thoughts about the magazine, or your very own wellness tips!

Thanks to his stellar grasp of eye makeup techniques, he is well-known for creating stunning looks for

single-lidded Asian eyes. Armed with a newly-acquired Specialist Diploma in Cosmetic Science fromSingapore Polytechnic, he is also the quick go-to for many beauty editors for clarification on ingredients

    and product efficacy.

A&B has a chat with Larry:

1How did you get started in the industry? It was by accident actually. Id graduated fromSingapore Polytechnic with a Diploma in Biotechnology. After serving National Service (NS), I realised I did notwant to be confined in a laboratory doing biotechnologyresearch work; biotech sales didnt appeal to me either.I went through the papers and found out that Clinique

was looking for part-timers, so I applied to work there. It was from there that I discovered I enjoyed paintingfaces and bringing my subjects beauty from inside out.

2What keeps you going? The desire to educate and empower people aboutmakeup; to allow them to embrace their beauty, andnot some synthesised image of a popular look.

3Where do you draw inspiration from?Everything. From my favourite makeup artists likeKabuki and Alex Box, to what surrounds us, to culturaluses of colour and makeup. All evoke emotions from

    which I draw my inspirations.

4Please share a makeup memory of yours. The most recent one is from New York FashionWeek and London Fashion Week during September2014:

The backstage madness, plus the opportunity to beeducated while working with amazing makeup artistslike Yadim for Maybelline, Sarah Lucero of Stila, LanNguyen-Grealis for The Body Shop UK and the KevynAucoin NYFW team, gave me a thrill. The manipulationof products and the explanation of how each look wascreated just sent chills down my spine.

5What sets Asian and western beauty productsapart? Both might have different perceptions of beauty buttheyre similarly about embracing beauty. For instance, both believe in offering radiancebut Asian beauty products focus on attaining fairerglowingskin, while western products embracecontours and bronzed skin.

6What are your thoughts on Korean beauty

    trends?

I am not a big fan of K-beauty trends but I understand

that makeup artists have to work with them.

The Korean-inspired cat-eye flick trick is actuallynothing new and it might not necessarily suit everyone. Its really about manipulation of eye liner for youreyeshape. Many blindly follow the trend and create horrorson their faces instead of enhancing their own looks.

7What makeup advice would you offer single-lidded ladies?Embrace your single eyelids. This obsession with

having double eyelids is ridiculous; the whole eyelidarea can be used for makeup. If you think you needdouble eyelids for beautiful eye makeup, do take alook at some of the work Ive done on mono-liddedAsian eyes.

    MAKEUP

Makeup is one of the items in the modern womans toolkit tolook good. However, it can also have the reverse effect!

Angie Soon of Cosmoprof Academy tells you what NOT to do.

    MAKEUPBLUNDERS

THAT ARE MAKING YOU LOOK TIRED

    S

ince time immemorial, women had been using makeup to

enhance our faces. Archaeological evidence of cosmetics

were found dating back to ancient Greece and Egypt. We

all know about Nefertiti the ancient Egyptian Queen from

1320 BC whose famous bust showed her eyes to be linedwith black eyeliner.

It is all the rage to use concealer to hide circles under the eyes or to go all out to sculpt

the face with highlighting and shading alaKim Kardashian. But if used with a heavy hand,

or the wrong shade, the effect might look garish instead of beautiful under natural light.

The best way forward is to use a light touch for concealers and to skip the contouring all

together in your everyday makeup. Spread concealer only in areas that need coverage.

Choose a shade just one shade lighter than your skin tone, and apply evenly at the under

eye area. As most of us have yellow in our skin, chose a yellow based concealer instead of

    pink tone.

Conceal and hide, contouring and shading

Start withthe RightFoundationSome women apply too much,

and some too little. Just the rightamount of foundation in the best

texture for your skin type will

really bring out the beauty of your

    skin. Foundation serves to even

    out colour and hide blemishes.

As a general guide if you have dry

skin, do try out fluid foundation.

    Some formulas even contain anti-

    ageing ingredients. Women with

dry skin should not use two way

    cake foundation, as the powder

tend to creep into fine lines around

    the eyes and mouth.

    TIP

    Prepyourskin

    The key to look-

    ing fresh and

    hydrated is to

    start makeup on

    a clean face. You

need to apply a light moistur-

iser, prior to putting on makeup.

    Moisturiser will ensure that your

    foundation will glide on smoothly

    and evenly, thus reducing that

    cakey look.

  • 7/23/2019 Aesthetics Beauty Issue 2 2015

PowderYou can skip powder if you have dry skin.

Too much powder on dry skin in an air-con-

ditioned environment will result in a cakey

look. On the other hand if you have oily skin,

a light dusting of loose powder will help to

lessen the shine and make the makeup last

    longer.

Applying Blusher inthe Wrong AreaA common mistake is to apply blusher too

high or too low on the cheek, or to apply ablusher colour that is too bright. The de-

sired look is to look naturally rosy, as if you

have been enjoying lots of fresh air. To add

a warm glow choose a natural blush colour

and apply to the apples of your cheeks.

Blend up towards the hairline then down-

    wards to soften the colour.

Too Much Eye LinerAnother common mistake is to use too

much eye liner. Once you are past a certain

age, too much eye liner looks dated. For

For more information, go to www.cosmoprof.com.sg

Lipstickand LipLinerIf you use lip liner, the

    pencil liner should not

    look obvious. Its safest

    to choose a lip liner

    colour as close to your

    natural lip shade as

    possible. The lip liner

    should be blended

    into the lip stick.

instance black liquid eye liner used only

on the bottom lash line looks too harsh.A better way would be to use a black/grey

pencil and focus on the corners of the up-

per and lower lash line. Blend / smudge

it precisely to get the effect of wider look-

    ing eyes.

ShimmeryMakeupShimmers and glitter makeup look best

on young skin. Best to skip shimmery eye-

shadow as they can make eyes look tired.

When zits pop, you get the gnawing feeling its likely the backlashfrom regularly gorging on comfort food like durian, instant

noodles and sambalstingray. That is when you will look

enviously at your friends clear skin, wishing for zit-free bliss as

well. Yes, good skin can be genetic, but the right food can help

you get peaches-and-cream complexion as well.

    BEST FOODS FOR

    1

Drink up - water tops the list of must-dos for

good skin. Dr EP Wong, Medical Director at

EPW Laser and Aesthetics Clinic, asks two

questions of his patients to gauge if they aredrinking enough water: Do you drink a cup of water

every two hours? and Do you go to the toilet every

    two hours?

2Dr Eileen Lew, Medical Director of Le

Privat Clinic recommends eating good fats

from foods such as salmon, flax seeds and

walnuts which deliver essential fatty acids

for healthy skin cell membranes. The latter act as

barriers to harmful radicals and is the passageway for

nutrients in and out of the cells.

    3

Eat fruits and greens for their anti-aging and

    anti-inflammatory properties. Dr Lew recom-

mends strawberries, which contain high levels

of vitamin C, to boost collagen production forsmooth and firm skin. She calls tomatoes a powerhouse

fruit, as they are rich in lycopene, which have been clini-

cally proven to help even skin tone and reduce acne.

4Up your green intake with supplements

containing barley grass, chlorella and spiru-

lina, touted as green superfoods. Greens have

marked beneficial effects on blood pressure,

cancer prevention, cholesterol and the immune system,

attributed to plant chlorophyll which can prevent dis-

eases. Green superfoods have a higher concentration of

chlorophyll than that found in most green vegetables.

7Use healthy oils as they contain fatty acids essential forsupple skin. You can drizzle virgin sesame oil on saladsand use coconut oil for baking or stir-frying as it ismore heat stable than other oils. Ketki Vinayachandra,

Fillers can enhance andimprove your face takingyears off your appearance.

But, how do we know when isa good time to get them and

what should we get? Here aresome facts about fillers thatwill help you make a more

    informed decision.

    SHOULD YOU GET

    FILLERS?

    1Fillers are a term

    used to refer to a

    variety of medical

    products designed

    to rejuvenate the

face by filling in areas of

volume loss. Some of the most

    common brands are Juvederm,

    Restylane and Sculptra.

    2They target

    lines, wrinkles,

    and volume loss

    by filling in the

    areas, unlike

    Botox, which works by relaxing

    muscles. Secondly, all fillers,

    regardless of how they are

    packaged, must be prepared

    in syringes and injected using

    small needles. No surgery or

    incisions are required.

    FILLERS

    4Juvedermcontains ananesthetic called

lidocaine thathelps numbthe injected area. As for theothers, icing and applying atopical numbing agent willreduce the discomfort duringtreatment.

    5

Fillers work bestfor areas in themiddle and lowerthird of the face, unlike Botox

which is ideal for the upperone third of the face.

6One of thebiggest telltalesigns that youare suitable for afiller treatment

is a noticeable deepening ofthe nasolabial folds (these arethe deep lines that form nextto your mouth, aka marionettelines). If you notice youronce-prominent cheekbones

deflating, especially when youlook at your face at an angle, fillers can help.

8Last but not least, always seektreatment andadvice from adoctor who is boardcertified in eitherplastic surgery ordermatology.

3Hyaluronic acid-based fillers, likeJuvederm, can lastanywhere from sixmonths to a whole

year. Also, it has been reportedthat consistent treatments willgive you optimal results and youmay need less filler over time.

7People also usefillers to get asharper face withmore definedfeatures. For

example, fillers can be used tocreate cheekbones, a highernose bridge or to create an ovalface shape.

    ASK THE

    DOCTOR

here may behope for stretchmarks. DrSylvia Ramirez, medical andscientificdirector of CutisMedical Laser

Clinics, shares three innovative treatmentsto help banish those unsightly scars.

    THE TRUTH ABOUT

    STRETCHMARKS

What are stretch marks and what causes them?

Stretch marks or Striae are actually linear scars presenting aslong, narrow stripes or lines that develop on the surface of thebody with an off-color tone. Stretch marks can appear when thereis rapid stretching of the skin. The top layer of the skin (epidermis)

is thinned and there are collagen breaks in the second layer of the skingiving rise to its distinctive appearance and texture. Stretch marks are mostcommonly located on the breasts, hips, thighs, buttocks, abdomen, andflank.

There are several causes of stretch marks, including:GENETICS:Women are more likely to get belly stretch marks if their

mother, for instance, had stretch marks after pregnancy.

    SIGNIFICANT WEIGHT GAIN AND LOSS:

Your skin stretches as your weight fluctuates, sometimes resulting in stretch marks.

PUBERTY:Growth spurts during puberty oftenresult in stretch marks as the skin is unable tokeep up with the bodys rate of growth.

BODYBUILDING: Rapid development of musclemass may stretch the skin beyond its limits.

    CORTICOSTEROIDS: Heavy or long-term use

of oral or topical corticosteroids, a widely usedpharmaceutical steroid compound, can lead tostretch mark formation.

ETHNICITY: People with darker skin are lesslikely to have stretch marks.

2What are the different types of

    stretch marks?

A simple way to classify stretchmarks regardless of its originor location is by colour. Stretch

marks appear as parallel streaks of red,

thinned, glossy skin that over time becomewhitish and scar-like in appearance. The stretchmarks may be slightly depressed and have adifferent texture than normal skin.Red or purple stretch marks are easier to treat, because the skin is still in the process of tryingto heal. However, older stretch marks maystill be treated and a combination treatmentapproach is necessary.

    3

    Based on your experience, what

are some of the best treatments

    for stretch marks?

Its important to say that thereare no large randomised clinicalstudies that evaluate treatments of stretchmarks. Many published studies are limited tosubjective evaluation of a treatment or topicalmedication, and many of the treatmentsdescribed below are also based on our clinicexperience.

When the stretch marks are still new (red),intensive moisturisation of the lesions and theuse of vitamin C, fruit acids, retinols, and otherpharmaceuticals have been shown to have someimprovement. Some laser procedures described

below are also helpful infacilitating the improvementand healing of the stretchmarks. As the stretch marksturn white, we will do acombination of treatments asdescribed below:1.) Laser Genesis, an FDAapproved treatment thathas no downtime which cangradually build collagen, improves skin texture

as well as the appearance of stretch marks withrepeated treatments. In a study with this laser,55% of patients reported excellent improvement.2.) Trilipo, which is a form of radiofrequencytreatment with clinical studies demonstratingcollagen building without downtime. In a studyevaluating the effectiveness of this systemon stretch marks, up to 75% improvement instretch marks were described.3.) Dermapen, which is a microneedling devicethat creates new collagen and elastin. Theskin needling breaks the fibrous and uneven

scar tissue and stimulates growth of new tissue. We typically combine this procedure with LaserGenesis as our experience suggests collagenbuilding with multiple approaches providesbetter results.

    Are these treatments suitable for

    everyone?

These treatments are all US FDA-cleared safe and effective for allskin types. However, like other

treatments, there are several contraindications/precautions necessary particularly for pregnant

    patients.

    5How many treatments are

    recommended for good results?

The number of recommendedtreatments will vary on theextent, age and depth of the

stretch marks. We will generally start with twoto five sessions of the Dermapen, combinedwith a similar number of sessions for the LaserGenesis. For Trilipo, clinical studies suggest sixor more weekly sessions. The good thing is thatthese treatments have minimal or no downtime, and are generally comfortable procedures.

But to shop for a store, meansyou no longer shop for

    whole new experience.

You started et-i-kit more than a

year ago with your partner, BenLim. What was the reason for

    doing so?

I guess you can call it serendipity.

It started with the frustration of

not being able to find the brands

that I love in Singapore, followed

by a curiosity that got me

    hunting down multi-label stores

    here. Then a chance encounter

happened when I was in New

    York and everything started

    falling into place!

What is it really like to shop

for a living and do you always

    get first pickings at your

    collection?

    Almost everyone I know thinks

that its a dream job to do what

I love, which is shopping. But to

shop for a store, means you no

    longer shop for yourself; instead

you shop for the customers and

    thats a whole new experience.

    Im definitely still learning along

    the way via customers feedback,

    and being always out sourcing.

    Ive also been disappointed when

I brought in the wrong brand

for the Singapore market, but I

guess thats all part and parcel

    of learning.

Et-i-kit has a very strong social

    your collaborations with top

    Instagrammers. How has this worked

    for your brand?

Social media has been a great help in

getting people to know about us. After

all, we are not located in a mall nor

are we located in a popular shopping

stretch. Hence, we depend a lot on

social media to educate consumers on

    the brands that we carry.

We are also really grateful and

fortunate to have collaborated with all

the social media influencers who were

so easy to work with and who strongly

believe in the brands that we carry.

    Who is the quintessential et-i-kit

I dont think there is an ideal et-i-kit

    be practiced on a day-to-day basis -

as dressing is also a social form of

Why you get it andhow to fight it, as

    shared by Dr NicholasNgui, Medical

Director and Founderof Neu Age Clinic.

    A

cne is a common skin condition that is characterised bywhiteheads, blackheads, greasiness and red pimples on theface, neck, back and upper chest. These areas have the greatestpopulation of oil glands. In people affected by acne, their oilglands are overactive and this leads to the clogging of pores and

oil glands with oil and dead skin cells, bacterial overgrowth and inflammation of the oil glands.

QI am in my thirties and I noticed recently that I have pimples on my face. Isnt acne acondition that only teenagers get?

While it is true that acne occurs mostly during the teenage years (affecting over 90% ofteenagers), acne during the adult years is becoming more and more prevalent these days.Adult acne affects women more often than men, occurring in 1 out of 4 men and as high as 1out of 2 women. Furthermore, one does not need to have teenage acne to experience adultacne.

QWhy does acne occur in adults? The exact cause of adult is not fully understood. However here are some of the factors

triggering and aggravating adult acne: Hormonal uctuation, especially in women Lifestyle changes and stress Usage of certain make-up formulations causing clogging of the pores Medication like anti-epilepsy drugs, mood stabiliser drugs and steroids. Examples of steroids are

birth control pills, anabolic steroids for muscle building; steroids for managing long term inflam-matory conditions.

Medical conditions like polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). Genetic tendency individuals with a family history of acne are at a higher risk of developing acne.

QDo diet and lifestyle play a role in the occurrence of acne? There is some evidence that suggests that consuming a lot of high glycemic index food

(i.e. refined carbohydrate, sugar and starch) may aggravate acne. As mentioned earlier, lifestyle and work stress can aggravate acne. Using heavy makeup and leaving them on

overnight can increase clogging of the pores and in turn aggravate acne.

QIs it necessary to see a doctor for acne problems?Arent over-the-counter solutions effective

    enough?

Acne is a very complex condition that varies greatly inseverity and appearance. It can be as mild as a minorcrop of white heads with no inflammation or it can be verysevere with multiple eruptions of inflamed nodules, pusfilled cysts and scars covering the whole face.

In view of the fact that acne can be severe, over-the-counter solutions are far from adequate in dealing withanything more than an occasional zit or two. I think itsalright to use over-the-counter products like cleansersand pimple spot applications initially when the person isexperiencing very mild acne.

He or she should consider seeing a doctor if the acnestarts to get worse and the earlier, the better. The doctorcan assess the status of the acne and determine thelevel of treatment that is needed. The key to managingacne is early detection and aggressive intervention whereappropriate in order to prevent serious effects of acnesuch as pigmentation changes, scarring, disfigurementand psychological disturbance.

QWhat is the best way to prevent scarring fromacne? What if I already have scars?

Scarring develops when the skin is so damaged by theacne inflammation that the affected skin cannot regeneratenormally and is replaced by fibrous scar tissue.

Curbing the acne inflammation as quickly as possible toprevent or minimise irreversible damage to the skin andpreventing new inflamed acne lesions from erupting is

the key to preventing scarring. So the best way to prevent

scarring from acne is to treat and control the acne as earlyas possible.

If scars are already present, the best way to treat them isthrough laser resurfacing therapy and needle subcision, which is a needling technique that cuts and frees up scarfibres that are pulling the skin downwards causing pitsand depressions.

QWhat sort of skin cleansing/maintenance regime isbest suited for acne skin?

Its a common misconception that just keeping the skinclean is enough to control acne. Acne per se is not justrelated to poor hygiene. Acne is related to excessive oilproduced by the skins oil glands, the development ofwhiteheads/blackheadsand subsequent inflammation ofthese whiteheads/blackheads due to bacterial overgrowth.

With this in mind, I would recommend a good cleanserthat would effectively clean the skin and clear awaysurface oil but not dry the skin. Secondly, use skinproducts and medication to control the formation ofwhiteheads and inflammation. Your doctor can advise youon this.

In more severe cases, oral antibiotics like doxycycline orretinoids like isotretinoin are prescribed by the doctor.Treatment procedures like Theraclear light and vacuumsuction therapy and salicylic acid skin peels are useful inexpediting the clearance of acne.

I was pampered with the signature Royal Meridian Foot& Back Therapy (100min). Without a doubt, I would ratethis as the best foot massage I have ever experiencedand I am a seasoned spa addict. As you sink into the

plush massage chair and close your eyes to the softmusic, it begins with a warm herbal foot bath to improveblood circulation. While soaking the strain away, youreceive a tension-relieving head and hand massage. Then, the real magic happens: a thorough acupressurefoot massage with your chosen essential oilfromthe five house blends of metabolic and detox, muscletension, jet-lag reliever and immunity booster, sensitiveskin and relaxing. With skilled precision, the expertmaster zones in on the reflex points in your feet that areconnected to the bodys vital systems to stimulate themand enhance healing. What follows is the traditional footcupping that creates such a pleasurable sensation. From

the feet, the master continues with an intensive backmassage, with deep tissue strokes and acupressuretechniques guaranteed to ease any fatigue, stiffnessand tension. Lastly, a hot stone treatment evokes arevitalising and comforting warmth to end this amazingtherapy.
