throw of my slip waiting for the tide to set me free! Leon Kolinski, John Roderick, Jim LaMar, Jack Sherwood, and George Carmignani all watched from the back deck and had a good laugh as I tried to get my boat floating again! Thanks to Jim LaMar and Jack Sherwood for helping my guests get back to the shore! I'll keep trying!

O.K., That's it for now! I'll leave some room for others on these pages!

See you out there! B the C

Jack Sherwood has been doing a SUPER job in the bar! He's got it all spiffed up and has come up with some specials on Friday nights. Jack has a fun sense of humor and has been bringing in some of his favorite music to share! Come on up and join us for the regular Friday Night Camaraderie!! Check out the games Jack has going too!

Yacht Club. Come Join Us For Great Events And Support Our Cruise

Cruising Out with Pam Hipsley…

Thank you to all the cruisers that sent their money in for the Peta-

luma cruise. The reservations are all made, and it is sounding like a

fun time. I will have information for our July cruise-out shortly. I had said it was a Mystery Cruise, but the mystery has gotten out. We will

be going to the Oakland Yacht Club and participating in their Western

Night. I may include a twist to the

route. Would love to have as many asphalt cruisers as possible. Oakland

YC has challenged Aeolian YC to a Line Dance contest, so start picking your team now.you like. I can be reached at:

It was a beautiful day on the bay when the first race of the Ming-Perata series; The Allinger Race took place on April 14 in the south bay. All racing boats and the committee boat were on point at the 13:00 starting time: the only thing missing was the wind. After a postponement of 25 minutes. the wind arrived and all boats crossed the starting line with no prob-lem at 13:30.

Course # 10 was selected by the committee of Bob Frey, Bob Jorgensen, Jim Lamar and Committee boat Captain Scott Saylor.

Congratulations to all racers who participated. The corrected finishes are as follows:

We are looking forward to the second race of the series on May 12. It sure makes the races more fun when we have a larger fleet out on the water. Some of our captains are looking for crew - please sign up on the cube on the back porch or call Gary Barker. It’s a great way to learn or review your sailing skills - in a safe place - with your Aeolian Friends. The after race BBQ is great fun and open to all. Come on down and listen to the race being sailed again. Again THANK YOU to all who came out to race.

Membership and Financial Secretary update

Our current Aeolian membership is 198 members

We honor and mourn the recent loss of one of our Honorary Members Loran “Doc” Mebine who amazed and delighted us with his wit, charm and vitality, regularly sailing far into his Golden Years.

As Financial Secretary and Membership Chair I am very excited about our transition into modern times with our new ability to accept credit cards for all transactions with the club, including dues, berthing, dinners, boutique purchases and bar bills. We send a huge thank you to Treasurer Julie Cooper for researching and arranging this great option, and to Office Manager Sherri for her extra effort in rolling this out. All of the details are explained elsewhere, so I won’t elaborate, but please plan to come to the General Meeting on May 10 for a full discussion and answers to any questions you may have. It takes a very small effort to set up, but I anticipate this will make all of our lives easier when we get fully on board with this. Swiping your credit card through the machine versus manually entering the card information saves the club a little money, so if this is convenient for you, please choose that option. You may also Choose to han-dle your dues and berthing fees with automatic deductions.

At our General Meeting May 10 we will be voting on a critically needed change in our Bylaws to permit adjusting our Initiation Fees to meet the evolving needs of the club. Although this does not affect current members, it is very important to continue to grow our mem-bership and thrive. We will also have a serious discussion of bar prices, and this does affect members. We need at least 50 people to come out in order to have the vote. We will have a great potluck and provide complimentary wine, so please mark your calendars and plan to attend the meeting. Encourage your friends to come out. This should be fun and informative!

We are exploring ways to stimulate our membership drive and we welcome your suggestions and creative energy. Our fabulous Cinco de Mayo event is a great opportunity to invite friends to join you and enjoy the club. The weather is looking better from the back deck. Come on down and bring friends!

If you have recently joined the Aeolian and you have not picked up your new member packet with your club key, name badge, burgee, and bylaws, please contact me to arrange this. We will make a photo op to introduce you to the club in the Jib.

AYC RBOC Report

It is this time of the year that Commodore Brian will ask the membership of AYC to join him in making a contribution to RBOC. The primary purpose of RBOC is to protect boater’s rights and promote responsible use of waterways. Their funding comes from voluntary donations made by individual members of yacht clubs throughout California. Most of the contributions are spent for legal services provided by Des-mond & Desmond.

The following are the current issues that RBOC is involved in protecting boaters interests before legislative and regula-tory agencies:

Abandoned Vessels - RBOC proposed legislation result-

ing in a Stakeholder Taskforce to clear waterways of aban-doned and derelict vessels.

Boating Access - RBOC continues efforts to stop restric-

tions that would negatively impact recreational boating and fishing on California's Coast, the Delta, its lakes and water-ways.

Boating Fees & Taxes - Opposes any attempt to in-

crease fees and taxes on boating unless absolutely justified. RBOC opposes a proposed bill in the State Assembly to tax yacht club membership, slip rentals, and other marine services (AB 2540).

Environment - RBOC advocates clean and healthy wa-

terway by being an active member and supporter of the

California Clean Boating Network (CCBN).

Invasive Species - RBOC continues

to find cooperative approaches with the state's effort to prevent and eradicate invasive species infestations.

Marina & Permits - RBOC works

with agencies and commissions to miti-gate restrictive measures and supports acceptable standards to ensure clean marinas.

Department of Boating & Waterways - Oppose elimina-

tion. RBOC testifies at every hearing when this is on the agenda.

Earlier this month I walked the halls of the Capitol visiting

State Legislators promoting RBOC positions for the above

issues. Coordinating this effort is the well respected law

firm of Desmond & Desmond. They are licensed lobbyists

who have been representing recreational boating interest

since 1971. In order to maintain this level of representation

we need your financial support. Please be generous when

you’re asked to make a contribution when you get your next

bill from the club.

Treasurer's Report - May 2012

The Aeolian Yacht Club is now in the 21st Century in our Business Office! Included with your invoices this month you will find we have new offerings:

The option to have your invoices emailed to you in lieu of ‘snail mail’. At your request, your invoices will be delivered as a PDF document in an email from Aeolian Yacht Club [email protected] entitled Invoice from Ae-olian Yacht Club. All you need to do is note your preferred email address on the May invoice and return to the office, or email us a note with this information to: Aeolian Yacht Club [email protected] We will validate with what we have on file and update our billing system.

Even more exciting is the ability to pay your bill electronically!!! We will be enclosing with your May invoice a form to com plete and return authorizing automatic electronic transfers for your Aeolian charges.

This form is required by law (if you want these transfers to be done automatically in the future) and must stipulate the amount and frequency of the transfer. For this reason, you may receive more than one form to complete and sign (for example – Berthing – quarterly, dues – annually). We have prepared these forms specific to your account, and all you need to do is complete the banking information, sign and return. The forms will be scanned and stored on a se-cure hard drive and immediately shredded for your security.

In addition, all future invoices will provide you with the ability to indicate a credit card account you would like to pay that particular amount with. This feature is available for any charges, including regular dues, berthing, assessments, etc. for those who have not completed an automatic transfer agreement. This can also be used for any other charges, such as Ship Store, dinners or locker rentals.

As you know, your ATM cards most likely have a Visa logo, and can be used as well as all Visa, Mastercard, Discover and American Express credit cards.

We will also have a credit card machine, which is soon to be delivered. We encourage you to stop by the office and swipe your card for our secure record keeping. We look forward to this as a valuable tool in managing our Club Business, as well as reduction in paper and postage and decreasing our accounts receivable.

If you have any questions on these items, or just want to volunteer to help varnish my boat (j/k) just drop me a line at ([email protected])

Yours Truly, Your Treasurer

Next Cruise Out to Petaluma, May 25 through 28…

Rear Commodore Scott Sayler, our Cruise Captain for this cruise, and his wife Mari, with guests Port Captain Jim Lamar and Nancy Hill will be there as well as Dave McDaid and his family, Al McAfree and his wife Jeanne, Jack Mangan and Carolyn, and Commodore Brian Aylen will be taking his sail-boat. We'll all be "cruising out" to Petaluma... that's 5 boats SO FAR for Memorial Day Weekend! There are LOTS of activities planned for this Cruise Out!! The whole town of Petaluma is involved! The theme is "PIRATES"! Doug and Pam Hipsley will be there too! Come join us!! Call Scott at (510) 772-0892 or Pam Hipsley at (925) 954-1041 as soon as you possibly can to get your name on the list!!

Retraction: Last month I stated the salmon limit was 3 fish and the size limit was 20". My usual reliable source gave me the wrong information. The right dope is a 2 fish limit with the size limit is 24". The cost factor about $95.00 on a charter boat plus the lack of fish in the ocean lately. What they should do is lower the size limit and allow you to keep the first fish you catch regardless of size. Most fish will die if you don't handle them correctly, so you might as well keep them instead of feeding the crabs. On opening day the take home fish count was less than one fish per fisherman. Let's hope it will improve as the season continues. The going price of dead weights has gone up. Last year it was $3.00 for a 2 1/2 lb. lead ball. This year over $7.00. Seems everything is costing more money. When I started salmon fish-ing years ago the cost of iron balls was 3 for $1.00. My wife Toshi and myself arrived at Pier 35 to board the Star Princess and found a line of people about a block long. It seems there were two ships at the pier at the same time. Then there was a delay on the ship's departure. Something to do with union help. Didn't leave until nine. I remember giving the travel agent instructions that I wanted a

outside stateroom in the center of the ship. When we boarded I found out we had a outside room at the bow of the ship. The ship is over 900 feet long, and all the restaurants are located at the stern. So every day we had to walk the length of the ship to eat. Whenever you make reservation in the future be sure you are getting what you signed up for. Getting home I called the travel agency and complained about the accommodations. The could care less, so I recommend staying clear of the agency called the Cruise Company located in Modesto! (con't next month)
