DOWN LEAGUE DIVISION 4 St Pauls 1-9 Annsboro 1-14 14.03.93

With the Holywood p i t c h i n g r e a t c o n d i t i o n and expectations h i g h , i t was hoped t h a t St Pauls could t o p p l e newly r e l e g a t e d Annsboro.A 5 p o i n t defeat d i d not r e f l e c t the closeness of t h i s match,yet a defeat i s a d e f e a t . I n s i d e the f i r s t ten minutes St Pauls had raced i n t o a 1-3 t o 0-1 lead.Giving t o t a l commitment they should have l e d by much more.Eugene Donnelly converted 2 f r e e s and then one from a l l o f 50m . Next a 4 man move was ended when Paul Monaghan goaled.With m i d f i e l d and h a l f forwards on top,St Pauls were making a mockery o f t h e i r r a t i n g i n D4.Yet they could not convert possession i n t o scores.Showing a l l the q u a l i t i e s o f a D3 team,Annsboro broke r a p i d l y from defence and, where h e s i t a n t St Pauls forwards pondered,Annsboro took every chance.At h a l f time they were u n f o r t u n a t e not t o go i n lea d i n g . H i g h l y questionable r e f e r r i n g gave Annsboro a penalty.Michael Mc Govern d e f l e c t e d the shot over the bar and then j u s t after.produced a gre a t f u l l s t r e t c h save.A d i s p l a y t h a t should have given St Pauls a t l e a s t a 5 p o i n t lead ended w i t h the teams a l l square 1-5 t o 0-8.Gerard Russell i n m i d f i e l d and Eoin M u l l i g a n a t no 11 f o r Annsboro t o r e St Pauls a p a r t .They scored a t w i l l w h i l s t St Pauls panicked.Fluent forward p l a y was non e x i s t a n t and Annsboro were 0-12 t o 1-5 i n f r o n t w i t h 12 mins left.Once again Donnelly r a i s e d h i s troops.13m out.from a l i n e b a l l he b r i l l i a n t l y s l i c e d over a p o i n t and then converted another f r e e . W i t h 4 mins t o go 2 p o i n t s seperated the teams w i t h the Pauls r e a s s e r t i n g t o t a l c o n t r o l . A break away goal ended hopes o f v i c t o r y and taught p l a y e r s some hard lessons.A team must have confidence t o use a l l players,they must get t h e i r scores and s t u p i d f o u l s cannot be continued i f they want success.Paul Baker was the man of the match w h i l s t Eug Donnelly scored 0-7.In r e t r o s p e c t a p o s i t i v e performance,ClOSe t o what i s needed . Down Memory Lane

Who are St Pauls G.F.C. ?

Are we t h a t team from B e l f a s t , o h no Holywood ,have yous ever done anything about t h a t p i t c h , how i s th e c r i c k e t c l u b , oh I d i d ' n t know yous played g a e l i c up t h a t neck of the woods- how long have you been going?

These are j u s t a sample of the qOesrAes given by informed people i n County Down about St Pauls .Well t h e r e i s much more t o i t than t h a t ,we are a c l u b t h a t has been served by many commited i n d i v i d u a l s over a number of years.

Whereas St Pauls were formed i n 1980 , g a e l i c games i n t h i s area was represented under the guise of a l t e r n a t e clubs w e l l before the name St Pauls was e s t a b l i s h e d .

St Comgall's G.A.C. ,formed i n 1964 represented Bangor i n Down Leagues up t o 1980.

Holywood played i n The South Antrim Leagues u n t i l Thomas Russell's entered the East Down Intermediate League i n 1976.Gaelic was played here under 3 names. Past President Paddy Mac Namee (RIP) who taught i n Holywood formed St C o l m c i l l e s i n the e a r l y 1930's.In 1949 St Laurecians r e k i n d l e d G.A.A. i n Holywood and then Thomas Russells formed.

Scrabo Harps were formed from Newtownards p l a y e r s i n October 1963,and alongside Bangor were i n s t r u m e n t a l i n forming The North Down League i n 1964.A Senior,Minor and schoolboys league comprised ; Bangor,Scrabo H a r p s , B a l l y c r a n , B a l l y g a l g e t , P o r t a f e r r y , K i l l y l e a g h and Darragh Cross.

1964 was a p i v o t a l year f o r g a e l i c i n t h i s area and extensive coverage was given t o these matches ,both i n The Newtownards Chronicle and i n the Bangor Spectator.Likewise,Holywood placed r e p o r t s i n t o the Spectator .These papers have proved t o be an i n v a l u a b l e source of i n f o r m a t i o n . I n each e d i t i o n a wide range of match r e p o r t s / s o c i a l events/photos and general i n f o w i l l be given. A l l o f t h i s w i l l be d e t a i l e d . St Pauls w i l l not be f o r g o t t e n amongst t h i s as they have had very successful under-age teams i n the 1980's.This p e r i o d i s one which has provided l i t t l e i f any information.Match r e p o r t s are non e x i s t a n t , p h o t o s have'nt been l o c a t e d nor have minute books.Unless t h i s m a t e r i a l i s l o c a t e d n o t h i n g w i l l be remembered of t h i s t i m e . MATCH REPORTS

Russell's beat St John's

In the South Antrim Junior C'ship 2nd round St John's ( B e l f a s t ) opposed Russell's. The match was played i n Corrigan Park,Russell's s t a r t e d as rank o u t s i d e r s , and f o r the f i r s t 10 mins i t looked as i f St John's would romp home.But the Holywood defence,in which R Sloan was outstanding held out,and St John's only score was a p o i n t from a 21 yards f r e e taken by G Carr. Then Russell's took up the running. M Mc Grorey t r i e d f o r but the shot was put behind f o r a 50 from which Russell's f a i l e d t o score.Then M Horan i n a f u r t h e r 50 l e v e l l e d the scores and sent the b a l l over the bar. A few mins l a t e r H Mc Grorey sent over a l o v e l y cross f o r J Morgan to punch i n t o the net. Russell's should have scored again,but instead St John's got a f u r t h e r p o i n t per G Mc Donagh. I n t e r v a l . Russell's 1-1 St John's 0-2.
