1 System description

0 The CompuMaster is an Uninterruptible Power Supply(UPS) for essential loads like PC’s, IT systems andsimilar device, consisting of

- a rectifier (battery charging)- a battery as energy storage device during mains failure

(input supply for the inverter)- an inverter to supply the connected loads when a

mains failure occurs- a static stitch-over circuit to change AC-power supply

from mains to inverter as long as mains is not availableand

- a filter circuit, situated on the mains input

Bloc diagram of a UPS

The UPS has to be connected between mains distributionand the load via standard mains socket.

Under normal operating conditions, i.e. the Compu-Master is supplied by mains, the battery will be fullycharged by the rectifier. Loads connected to the Compu-Master will be supplied with filtered mains voltage.

36

pm-.---

When mains is not available or in case of decreased mainsvoltage to 85% of nominal value or less the inverter will takeover the supply of the connected loads.

The CompuMaster w-ill supply the load for a time according to thebattery capacity. This autarky time depends in general on theload power. In case of restored mains supply the UPS will switchover the load from inverter to mains operation, i.e. the load willbe supplied by mains again and the battery will be recharged.

In case of a mains blackout the mains input will be automaticallydisconnected by a two-pole-switch to fulfil1 safety requirements ofgerman standards (VDE) and to avoid backfeeding from the inver-ter to the mains.

The availability of the following three protecting functions isguaranteed:

+ Protection against mains blackoutDue to the type of CompuMaster the UPS will provide automati-cally output power up to 3OOVA, 600VA oder IZOOVA for a timebeing sufficient to shut down and switch off the system accor-dingly via shut-down software. The effective autarky time differsindividually and depends in general on the power consumption ofyour connected system load.

+ Protection against mains disturbanceIn case of an input voltage change to less than 85% or more than110% of nominal value, the CompuMaster initialises the change-over to battery operation automatically and supplies the load withAC-voltage to minimize the risk of data loss or damage.

+ Protection against electromagnetical disturbanceDisturbanc.es and problems caused by HF will be reduced by theuse of an EMI filter network

The last of a.m. faults (battery fault) looks like a discon-nection of the battery, but it has been detected duringnormal operation.

In case of a continuously sounding danger signal after the settingof the mains switch to position ,,I“ and following the UPS selfcheck, it is possible, that no voltage is available at the mains wallplug. Please check this device by connecting another load insteadof the UPS (e.g. a light).

The mains switch must be set to the OFF-position if theCompuMaster is not connected to the mains. If the mainsswitch still remains in the ON-position without mainsavailable the battery will be smoothly discharged. Thiscircumstances can lead to permanent damage if the unitremains more than two days at this state.

55

Page 26: AEG - Conrad · PDF fileAEG POWER SUPPLY SYSTEMS Unterbrechungsfreie Stromversorgung Uninterruptible Power Supply CompuMaster 300/ 600/ 1000 Betriebsanleitung Operating Manual

In the case that the mains distribution will be switchedoff every evening the same must be done with the UPS toavoid unnecessary battery discharge. Otherwise the in-verter will be started automatically because for the UPSit seems to be a mains failure.

This w-ill lead to a reduction of the usable life of thebattery.

Caused by completely discharged battery (e.g. unithadn’t been switched off by mistake despite a long-lasting mains failure or because of the self-dischargenature of the battery during a longer storage period)unlogical signalling states eventually may occur. Thiscan be normally eliminated without problems and hasno influence on the reliability of the UPS later on.

If the LED ,,BATT.-LOW” is blinking after switching onthe UPS the unit should stay at this state for approx. 3hours with respect to battery charging. Afterwards theUPS must be switched off for approx. 1 minute. Follo-wing this procedure the UPS should be switched onagain. Now only LED “NORMAL” should be blinking.

5 Storage, dismounting and scrapping

5.1 Storage

.A1l

Longer storage periods without charging may lead topermanent damage of the battery.

Because of inner chemical activity during storage withina temperatur range from 20°C to 30 O C the self-dischargerate will be approx. 3...6% of nominal capacity permonth. It is recommanded to store VRLA-batteries attemperatures below 20°C because the allowed non-charging period will be much longer.

To preserve full capacity, batteries should be rechargedeach 6 months when stored at 20°C. For a storagetemperature of 0°C the equivalent value would be24 months.

Prior to a longer storage period the CompuMaster shouldbe connected in normal operation without any load to themains for 48 hours to make sure a fully charged battery.

5.2 Dismounting

Dismounting of the CompuMaster is to be made viceversa to the sequence discribed in chapter 4.

5.3 Scrapping

At the end of useful life of the unit please make surea suitable scrapping of all components according tonational / international rules concerning disposal andrecycling with respect to an effective environmentalprotection.
