Mediumsized species. Pleura with rather small disƟnct patches of broad at grayish white scales. Scales on sternopleuron reaching about halfway to anterior angle, separate from patch on prealar area. Mesepimeron with a patch of scales on upper part, lower onehalf bare. HyposƟgial spot of scales absent. Lower mesepimeral bristles absent. (Carpenter and LaCasse 1955:243) Thorax: Integument of scutum brown; scutum clothed with narrow goldenbrown scales, with those on the anterior and posterolateral margins and the prescutellar space paler. Posterior pronotum with curved goldenbrown scales. Scutellum with narrow golden scales and light brown setae on the lobes. Head: Proboscis darkscaled, lightly sprinkled with lightbrown scales ; palpi short, dark, the fourth segment with a few white scales at base and Ɵp. Occiput with narrow paleyellow to goldenbrown scales and dark and pale erect forked scales on median area, with broad whiƟsh or paleyellow scales laterally; a small submedian darkscaled patch near margin of eye on either side. HindLeg.  Hind tarsi dark, with narrow basal white rings on all segments; front and middle tarsi similarly marked, but with white rings on segments 4 and 5 greatly reduced or absent.  

Male head. Maxillary palpi as long as Proboscis.      Antennae feather like. 

Wing: Length 3.5 to 4.0 mm. Scales narrow, dark.

Bionomics:  Immatures are found in unshaded fresh water flood pools in secondary scrub, but have also been col‐lected in ditches, swamps, rice fields, and elephant foot prints. Habitats usually have li le aqua c vegeta on or algae. Females are night biters and readily feed on man and ca le (Reinert, 1973).   

Medical Importance:  Capable of transmi ng eastern equine encephali s virus (EEE), western equine encephali s virus (WEE), SLE, West Nile Virus (WNV) (Turell et al., 2005:60). It is also a vector of dog heartworm (Reinert, 1973).  Troublesome biter. Flight range up to 10 miles.
