STANDARD SECTION PROPERTIES FOR HOT DIP GALVANIZING

INTRODUCTION

This Advisory Note contains tables showing the thickness, mass and coating area properties of standard structural steel sections used for hot dip galvanized articles.

The section properties have been derived from:

• AS/NZS 3679.1, Structural Steel – Part 1: Hot-rolled bars and sections

• AS/NZS 3679.2, Structural Steel – Part 2: Welded I sections

• AS/NZS 1163, Cold formed structural steel hollow sections

The coating properties have been derived from:

• AS/NZS 4680, Hot-dip galvanized (zinc) coatings on fabricated ferrous articles

All properties are based on nominal or minimum requirements of the relevant Standard and, particularly with the hot dip galvanized coating thickness, may understate the actual property. Where the coating thickness is important for durability design or sustainability calculations, reference should be made to the GAA or your GAA member galvanizer for more information. While the sections listed are those thought to be commonly available, designers should check specific availability with their steel supplier.

HOW TO USE THE TABLES

The tables provide an estimate of the coated area and the minimum increase in mass once the zinc coating is applied. It is important to recognise that the data is based on nominal section sizes and minimum required coating thicknesses. The actual properties will almost certainly differ from nominal, so the information should be used for guidance only.

The steel Standards include tolerances on shape as well as mass limits. Individual hot rolled sections are required to be no less than 97.% of the nominal mass and a group of products must be with ±2.5% of the nominal mass. Individual hollow sections (tubes) are required to be no less than 96% of the nominal mass.

The factors that affect the coating thickness include the steel thickness, venting and draining design, weld design, steel chemistry and surface roughness. It is not technically possible to coat only one surface of a tubular section, therefore the available coated surface for tubular sections in the tables always includes both the outer and inner surfaces.

Based on experience and as a guide only, most hot rolled structural sections with a minimum steel thickness of 10 mm will typically achieve a hot dip galvanized coating thickness of at least 125 µm, although the tables show only the requirement of the Australian Standard for > 6 mm steel thickness (85 µm). Some thinner sections can also achieve this outcome although agreement must always be obtained from the galvanizer prior to placing an order if non-standard coating thicknesses are required. Most cold formed tubular sections will require additional surface preparation (usually blasting) to achieve much thicker coatings than the nominal shown in the Standard and this document and this blasting is usually only available on the external surface.

This Advisory Note can be used in conjunction with the GAA Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) where there is a companion registered EPD for the substrate steel section. The EPD contains worked examples showing how to use these two documents to calculate the environmental impact of hot dip galvanized steel in Australia.
