LIFE DOESN’T STAND STILLAND NEITHER SHOULD YOUR INVESTMENTS.

To schedule a complimentary portfolio review, call or visit today.

As legislative representatives of District 3, including the townsof Brunswick, Pittstown and Schaghticoke, we are happy toprovide our constituents with a report on actions taken at theOctober 11, 2011 legislative meeting. In addition to the legislative meeting, recent activity has in-cluded the 2012 county budget. County Executive KathleenJimino presented the budget plan on October 20, and we canreport the proposal as submitted stays within the state taxcap. The fact that the budget stays within the tax cap is good newsfor taxpayers. However, the 2012 budget is just the latest tobe introduced without any meaningful or needed mandate re-lief. Relief from state and federal mandates was promised whenthe state tax cap was approved.Absent significant mandate relief, important county serviceswill be jeopardized. County officials are hopeful meaningfulmandate reform happens during the next several months toensure services are protected during 2012 and have joinedforces with other counties to continue lobbying for relief. In addition to the budget proposal that stays within the taxcap, legislators also saw the completion of the first phase ofthe state-ordered expansion of the jail. We are pleased toreport the project came in $3 million under cost, with the sav-ings due in part to a decision supported by legislators to hire aproject manager. The fact that the jail came in $3 million under budget is accom-panied by news that the jail will potentially bring in severalmillion annually from boarding inmates from other municipali-ties. Legislators played a role in helping manage the first phaseof the jail project to completion and will continue to work withthe sheriff to bring about revenues to defray the cost of theproject. At the October 11 legislative meeting, we approved a

resolution stating support forcreation of the Return theFavor program, an effort thatbrings together merchantsand community organizationsto provide discounts and otherbenefits to veterans. We an-ticipate work on starting theproject will begin this fall. The Legislature also approvedpurchase of snow and ice con-trol materials for use duringthe coming winter.Residents are welcome to con-tact us at our legislative of-f ices by writ ing to theRensselaer County Legisla-ture, 1600 7th Avenue, TroyNY 12180 or by e-mailing usvia the official legislativewebsite atwww.rensselaercounty.org.

EASY AND ECONOMICAL SOLUTIONS FOR

THOSE POSTPONED REMODELING PLANS

by Gale StevesIf you cannot wait any longer to make some much needed changesin your home, you are not alone. Americans are once again gettingready to begin the home improvement process. This pent-up energyoften begins in the kitchen, a room that gets a lot of wear and tearbut also seems to go out of fashion more quickly these days. Thistime around, you will be more cautious like many consumers are withtheir choices and costs ... and yet you want to make observablechanges. The most obvious change is installing a new countertop.Remember that countertops represent 30 percent of the color in anykitchen. Create new excitement by simply replacing your tired, scratched or stained counter surface with one made from the latestgeneration of premium laminate. The good news is this fashionablelook is available without the high cost of stone or the constantmaintenance those stones require. These lighter, less patterned laminatedesigns are perfect for today’s hectic lifestyle. In fact, the new cost-efficient countertop can be installed within a few hours and withoutdisrupting family life. They also give an existing kitchen the promiseof a whole new look that’s universally appealing. That equals a bigchange for small change. All of these new designs are available in anew surface effect of a lower matte-gloss sheen that seems almostglazed. The “Glaze” texture is actually a layering of matte featuresover a glaze of semi-gloss. This creates a timeworn result that is lessreflective and more restrained. It’s a perfect balance for thesophisticated dramatic materials that are part of today’s kitchen:stainless steel, chrome, copper, and even glass.Unlike granite, the

surfaces of these new laminatesare non-porous and never needto be sealed. Here are some otherremodeling ideas that will havehigh impact without highexpense:* Replace your old refrigeratorwith an energy-efficient model.Look in the big box stores forfloor models or even those witha little dent on the side, whichwill never be seen.* Refresh your cabinets with acoat of paint, and change all thecabinet hardware in the process. This makes everything look new.* Swap out your old ceiling lightfixture and install under cabinetlighting as well. A little light canmake a dramatic difference.* Change your sink or sinks.

The 2011 Rensselaer County 4-H Livestock Auction was heldMonday, September 5, 2011 at the Schaghticoke Fair, inSchaghticoke, New York. The auction has become a great wayfor members to end their week at the Schaghticoke Fair in hopesof earning some money from the sales of their animals to put intotheir school funds or to reinvest into their 4-H Project. Althoughit was a smaller auction than usual, there was still a great turnout!

Members worked hard all yearon caring for their animals andworking on their handling skills. The youth are also required tokeep a project record to teachthem about profit / loss. This was the first year we hada bred dairy replacement heifer,a jersey, owned by Olivia Logueand purchased by Murray Olivia Logue with her Jr. Champion Jersey Heifer Penny
