Advert Analysis – MGMT Congratulations

There has only been one image used in this advert for MGMT’s second major studio album ‘Congratulations’. However, as you can see the images and colours that have been used make the advert look very ‘busy’. Furthermore MGMT have already created a band identity via their last album ‘Oracular Spectacular’. Therefore by not having their album name or band name on the front cover creates curiosity for people who aren’t familiar with the band or instant reactions for people who are fans of the band. Although, on the limited edition CD cover, buyers of the album can scratch off the pink and purple checked background to reveal a black and white image of the band. The images mirror MGMT’s genre of music. Songs such as

‘Time to Pretend’, ‘Electric Feel’ and ‘I Found A Whistle’ all have a psychedelic tone/theme to them. This reflects their alcohol and drug abuse. Stereotypically, these actions take place in a rock and roll lifestyle in which case both band members adopted in their early career.
