FORMConnecting Adverbs

• They help connect sentences.

USEConnecting Adverbs

• Beginning of the sentence.

• Used with a comma.

• I was sick. Therefore, I didn’t go to school.

• I don’t like meat. However, I will still eat beef sometimes.

FORMTime Adverbs

• They are connected to time.

• Ex:

• Today

• Lately

• Before

• Now

USETime Adverbs

• Beginning or the end of a sentence.

• If it’s at the beginning, use a comma.

• Later, I will go downtown.

• I will go downtown later.

• Now, I’m going to go home.

• I’m going to go home now.

FORMViewpoint Adverbs

• They say how we feel about a verb.

USEViewpoint Adverbs

• Beginning of the sentence.

• Used with a comma.

• Unfortunately, I can’t come to school.

• Sadly, he’s sick.

• Luckily, I have a pen!

FORMMeasure Adverbs

• Some change the frequencyor possibility of a verb (adverbs of frequency)

• Example:

• always

• never

• possibly

• They also give special focus on a verb.

• Examples:

• especially

• only

• mostly

• even

• also

USEMeasure Adverbs

• They go before the main verb.

• BUT: If the main verb is BE, they go after.

• I mostly need to sit down.

• I never eat meat.

• I often translate words.

• I am only a student.

• She’s usually on time.

• We’re often impatient.

FORMAdverbs of Manner

• They describe how a verb happened.

USEAdverbs of Manner

• They go after the object (or main verb if there’s no object).

• I speak English quietly.

• He ate his sandwich loudly.

• We discussed the problem carefully.

• I ran quickly.

• We are waiting patiently.

• I wrote neatly.

FORMAdverbs of Place

• They describe wheresomething happened.

USEAdverbs of Place

• They go after the object (or main verb if there’s no object).

• We put the toy downstairs.

• I think I will leave my shoesoutside.

• I looked up.

FORMPrepositions

• Prepositional phrases (PPs) are also called adverbial phrases.

• They follow the same rules as adverbs.

• We call them PPs of time, PPs of place, PPs of manner…

• I went home.

• I went to my house.

• I’ll come after.

• I’ll come after class.

• I looked around.

• I looked at my friend.

USEAt the end

• If you have many adverbs or PPs at the end of a sentence, follow this order:

1. MANNER

2. PLACE

3. TIME

• I don’t speak quietly in the gym after school.

• I will talk to you later.

• We take the bus togetherfrom downtown every week.
