Minnesota - Land of 10,000 Lakes

Minnesota’s name comes from a Dakota Indian word that means “sky-tinted water.” Minnesota is dotted with more than 10,000 lakes, which is why it is commonly called the Land of 10,000 Lakes. (According to legend, the many lakes in Minnesota were formed by Paul Bunyan’s footsteps!) �e state’s quarter, issued in 2005, features a lake scene with the shape of Minnesota and the nickname Land of 10,000 Lakes.

Did you know?Judy Garland, who starred as Dorothy in the 1939 movie classic �e Wizard of Oz, was born in Grand Rapids, Minnesota, on June 10, 1922. Her name at birth was Frances Ethel Gumm.

�e Mississippi River begins in Minnesota. Legend says that the river started when Paul Bunyan tipped over his washtub! �e river �ows over 2,300 miles down the middle of the country and eventually dumps into the Gulf of Mexico.

St. Paul and Minneapolis are known as the Twin Cities. �e twins are on either side of the Mississippi River. It is an active metropolitan hub of commerce, industry, and transportation. �e St. Paul-Minneapolis Mall of America, the nation’s largest shopping center, attracts people from far and wide. Besides shopping, visitors can ride an indoor Ferris wheel or roller coaster.

�e northern portion of the state is heavily forested, making lumber a major industry there. Legends of Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox originated from this area.

Many northern Europeans, known as Scandinavians, settled in Minnesota. �ey brought their customs and traditions with them from Europe.

Patrick J. Towle of St. Paul, Minnesota, invented low-cost maple syrup. He called his product Log Cabin in honor of Abraham Lincoln. His economical topping for pancakes and wa�es used maple and cane sugar syrups.

�e Hormel Foods Corporation, makers of SPAM, is located in Austin, Minnesota.

Minnesota is famous for its cold weather, snow, and ice. �e Winter Carnival in St. Paul features many fun—but cold—contests, like the ice sculpture exhibits. Minnesota’s cold weather allows for ice skating—and ice hockey. �e U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame is there.

�e Mayo Clinic, a well-respected medical establishment, is in Rochester, Minnesota. �e clinics began when the Mayo family of doctors responded to a tornado disaster in their hometown of Rochester in 1883. �e clinic has opened other hospitals around the country.

Lake Minnetonka, Minnesota, near Mound (a suburb of Minneapolis) is the birthplace of Tonka Trucks. �e play trucks are well constructed and have become collectibles among adults.

Minnesota has other popular nicknames, like the North Star State, the Gopher State, and the Wheat State.

HistoryBritain gained control of eastern Minnesota from France a�er the French and Indian War. It was not until a�er the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812 that the United States controlled the entire region of Minnesota. Minnesota became a U.S. territory in 1849.

During the middle 1800s, European settlers and Indians began to disagree over the land. In 1862 the Indians attacked many of the white settlers. �eir leader was Chief Little Crow. �e U.S. military forced the Indians to move west.
