PASTOR A MESSAGE FROM OUR

Advent Voice

We’ve been celebrating Easter through our week of weeks of Easter, proclaiming “Christ is Risen! Christ is risen indeed, alleluia, alleluia!” Now it’s time to cross a threshold into the Ordinary Time of the Church year, moving from Ascension and the Seventh Sunday after Easter (where we honor our high school graduates June 1) to the Day of Pentecost (where we have Confirmation Sunday June 8). Thresholds mark a transitional space between the sacred and the ordinary. Important things happen at thresholds - in our own lives, in our neighborhood, and in our congregation. It’s a great time to look back and to look ahead. Wasn’t it just yesterday that these graduates and confirmands were brought as babies to the baptismal font? And now it’s time to enfold them in the community as they cross these new thresholds in faith and life, so that they are reminded that they are grounded and loved and supported by this community, and that together we are always moving ahead in faith. As we honor these graduates and confirmands, let’s look ahead to how we can best create stepping stones so we all continue to move ahead in faith. Looking ahead to September and Rally Day on September 7, I’d like us to try adjusting our early service to 8:00 and having a dedicated Sunday School time between services. Let’s try it for a while and see how it goes, and let’s see if it provides opportunities for growth in Sunday School and Worship. What are the other thresholds in our congregation? How do we welcome and embrace all who come through our doors, so that thresholds are places of transition and growth, rather than boundaries that exclude? How do we stay nimble as a congregation? What a blessing to be at this place and time, honoring graduates, walking in faith with those who are affirming their faith, and serving our community. So glad to be in ministry with you!

COUNCIL REPORT

Carpet in the Fellowship Building

The Council approved a plan to install new carpet

in the Fellowship Building. This will be done in

August, so it will not interfere with VBS.

June 2014 3 May 16-17, 2014 SYNOD ASSEMBLY: A Report from you Delegates It was a pleasure for us to serve as you representatives at the May 16-17, 2014 Synod Assembly. This was the

27th Assembly of the Northwest Washington Synod. The theme of the Assembly was “JOINING GOD’S

PARADE”. Questions asked in Bishop Unti’s opening remarks:

Is the church dying?

How does the church need to change to continue to exist?

Where is God leading the Parade?

Who is walking in God’s Parade?

What does it mean to be ELCA?

These were thought provoking questions that became the center of Assembly presentations and informal

discussions among participants during breaks. Officially there were 377 delegates present. (240 were lay

delegates of which were 133 females and 107 males; 118 clergy; and 19 retired clergy. Included in the total

were 14 persons of color.)

The keynote speaker was Tony Jones a noted author of many books on Christian ministry and spirituality. He

has a masters and doctor in divinity and serves as the theologian in residence of Solomon’s Porch in

Minneapolis. One of his most recent books are The Church is Flat: The Relational Ecclesiology of the

Emerging Church Movement.

In keeping with the theme of “Joining God’s Parade” he challenged attendees to consider how churches are or

need to change. Dr. Jones challenged our thinking in many ways as he addressed the emergence of new

church concepts and ways of practicing Christianity. While the “new way” was described as being rooted in

the old, change is often uncomfortable and or delayed out of fear of the “new”. Dr. Jones encouraged

looking at sacred doctrines and embrace changes from how we have always done it if the church is to survive.

One of his examples was to describe Solomon’s Porch, where the worship leader sits on a rotating stool in the

round, while those in attendance sit in comfortable chairs and couches often enjoying food and beverages. He

explained that Solomon’s Porch is organized as a “collective”. That meaning they are not so much an institu-

tional organization but more a group of people who are seeking to join together in whatever God is up to in the

world and believe that understanding this is best accomplished as a more relaxed informal community with

one another. There is no hierarchy or leadership group at Solomon’s Porch. Solomon’s Porch is made of

Covenant Participants and appears very different from the traditional church setting and service.

Each assembly also welcomes a representative from our National ELCA office. Rev. Linda Norman, the

ELCA Treasurer joined our gathering and provided several presentations. She is responsible for proposing

financial policy and provides implementation of all financial accounting, audit, investment, banking and relat-

ed systems and services for our church wide organization. In addition, she provides oversight of Information

Technology and the building’s Management Services. She was a dynamic speaker who responded to ques-

tions regarding the ELCA office under the newly elected presiding Bishop, Elizabeth Eaton.

Rev. Norman explained that the National ELCA focus centers on the future identity of the church as it faces

the challenges posed by the major changes that have occurred in both our culture and the ELCA since this

church’s founding in 1988. She indicated that the ELCA is a church that believes God is calling us into the

world — together. As part of this call, we seek the common good for society, provide moral vision and are

committed to addressing social and cultural injustices and issues. The ELCA participates in God’s just and

Advent Voice 4 loving purpose for all of creation in many different ways, from the daily actions of members as citizens, to

efforts in social service, to public witness for justice. Bishop Eaton’s asks that we center beliefs and actions

around:

We are the Church;

We are Lutheran;

We are the Church together;

We are the church for the sake of the World.

ASSEMBLY ACTIONS:

2015 Budget: The budget was passed in the capped amount of $1,480,500.

47% of the budget goes to support of Churchwide ministries, of which

64% from our support comes back in the form of grants for new starts

and congregation renewal and support for the position of Director for

Evangelical Mission. The following pie chart indicates how the budget

is allocated.

Super Bowl Sunday Hunger Awareness Day: A motion was passed to

encourage member congregations annually to make Super Bowl Sunday a day of awareness about hunger

issues and to collect food and funds to address the needs of the hungry. It also included a resolution that the

Northwest Washington Synod support other ELCA synods to annually make Super Bowl Sunday a day of

awareness about hunger issues.

Maritime Ministry: A motion was passed to recognize The Mission to Seafarers as a social ministry

organization of the Northwest Washington Synod and the Synod Council develop a plan to implement this

enhanced maritime ministry in cooperation with The Mission to Seafarers and to encourage participation of

congregations in the synod in its work.

ELCA Campaign: In celebrating the ELCA’s 25th anniversary and in 2017 the 500th anniversary of the

Reformation a motion was passed that the Northwest Washington Synod endorse and enthusiastically

support “Always Being Made New: Campaign for the ELCA” and invite individuals, congregations and the

Synod Council into conversations about giving to the campaign and working on ways to provide financial

and other support to bring about its success and to meets its goals.

Initiative I-594: A motion was passed for the Synod to endorse Initiative 594, which applies criminal

background-check requirements to all gun sales in Washington State and that the Synod encourage

congregations to hold educational forums on Initiative 594 in order to learn more about gun violence,

current gun laws and loopholes and preventative measures like universal background checks.

Synod Council Election Results: 12 council positions were elected. The following indicates the position

elected, winning candidate and their home church. A balance of male and female is maintained, therefore

positions either had 1 or 2 candidates elected. For the 12 positions there were a total of 38 candidates

nominated. (** indicates reelected)

There were a number of videos shown that were extremely educational and there will be an attempt to

get copies for increasing congregational awareness of church wide ministries and movements. One video

was about the ELCA Malaria Campaign. Our Synod goal was to provide $150,000 in support to the

churchwide campaign. Our goal was met and we actually provided $170,000. As a result of the ELCA

efforts there has been a 65% drop in mortality since 1990. Compass Housing Ministry continues to develop

support for homeless and in the past year added 62 new housing on Dexter and an additional 70 new units in

Shoreline. Additional agencies and social ministries supported through the synod are: Lutheran Community

Services, Luther Seminary, PLTS, Campus Ministries, and Faith Action Network.

In closing, we are all a part of God’s Parade. We are the church together. For we are told in Romans 12:4-5:

“For as in one body we have many members, and not all the members have the same function, so we, who are

many, are one body in Christ and individually we are members one of another.” This became an integral

theme throughout the Assembly and something we all need to remember as we go about our daily life.

The new photo directory is coming early this summer!

A big THANK YOU to all those who participated in the photo directory. There were 125 family units

photographed. Without the help of many this would not have been possible. There is still work to be done

before sending our roster and activity pages off to Lifetouch. The Layout committee is very busy right now

getting that part ready to go. I am thankful for all the helpers and praying that has gone on so far. Photos

have been showing up on doorsteps already. If the process continues to go smoothly we should have the

directories by the end of June/first of July.

The Classics Seniors Group

The Classics met on Wednesday, May 14th, for their monthly potluck There were 39 people in attendance and

as always lots of great food. After a short meeting we welcomed our guest speakers, Ilse Evelijn, Veere Smit

and Dorothy Read. Together they told the story of Ilse's remarkable journey. The book they wrote is titled, End

the Silence. It tells of Ilse's years of internment in a Japanese Concentration camp on Java when the Japanese

invaded her homeland during World War II. She recalls the pain and suffering she endured trying to cope with

her memories and a family that refused to talk about it. She was 10 years old when this happened. Several

people purchased copies of the book.

Our next meeting will be on Wednesday, June 11th at 12:30 in the Fellowship Hall. After this meeting we will

take a break until September 10th. All are welcome. Please bring a dish to share.

Advent Voice 10 Ready to Take a Walk on the Wild Side? At Weird Animals VBS, kids discover that Jesus’ love is one-of-a-kind. Weird Animals is a habitat filled with incredible Bible-learning experiences kids see, hear, touch, and even taste! Fun crafts, team-building games, cool Bible songs, and tasty treats are just a few of the standout activities that help faith flow into real life. All so that kids can discover Jesus’ one-of-a-kind unconditional love.

The adventure begins Monday, July 14 – Friday, July 18 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon daily at Advent Lutheran Church.

ONLINE REGISTRATION

Registrations are being accepted now online. Advent VBS is open to all kids ages 4 through those who have completed 4th grade so feel free to invite friends and neighbors in our community! Students who have completed 5th – 6th grades can volunteer as Crew Assistants and teens who have completed 7th grade may sign up to be on our Zoo Crew to lead a group or a station!

Check our web site at www.adventlutheran.net to register a child to participate in VBS. We are going to need lots of help sharing God’s love with the kids in our community! We are in need of adult and youth volunteers to be our Zoo Crew. Zoo Crew volunteers will either lead activity stations or lead a group of kids during VBS. We also need help with things like registration, decorating, volunteer recruiting, and lots more. Volunteer registration is happening now at www.adventlutheran.net. For more information, contact [email protected] or contact the church office. Sponsor-a-Child for Vacation Bible School Each year, Advent offers VBS free-of-charge to any child who wishes to attend. We are in need of some financial help so that we can continue to offer a free VBS to the children in our community. You can help by sponsoring a child for VBS. Your tax deductible donation of $10 or more will enable us to provide a life-changing VBS experience for a child in our community! Please fill out a VBS Sponsor-a-Child form and return it to the church office with your check or cash donation of $10 or more. More people are needed to furnish the treats for the 8:30

and 10:00am fellowship hours. If no one has signed-up to

furnish cookies and/or other treats, only coffee & tea will

be furnished after Sunday services.

There is a sign-up sheet in the Fellowship Hall, so please

put your name on one of the dates. It only takes about

6-dozen cookies per service.
