6So when they had come together, they asked him, ‘Lord, is this the time when you will restore the kingdom to Israel?’ 7He replied, ‘It is not for you to know the times or periods that the Father has set by his own authority. 8But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.’ 9When he had said this, as they were watching, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. 10While he was going and they were gazing up towards heaven, suddenly two men in white robes stood by them. 11They said, ‘Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking up towards heaven? This Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.’

Alleluia. Christ is risen. He is risen indeed. Alleluia!

Seeing we have a great high priest who has passed through the heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us offer him the praise worthy of his name.

Glory to God, glory to God, glory to God in the highest.Glory to God in the highest, and peace to his people on earth.Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father,we worship you, we give you thanks,we praise you for your glory.Glory to God, glory to God, glory to God in the highest.

you are seated at the right hand of the Father:receive our prayer.Glory to God, glory to God, glory to God in the highest.

For you alone are the Holy One,you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit,in the glory of God the Father.Glory to God, glory to God, glory to God in the highest.Grant, we pray, almighty God,that as we believe your only-begotten Son our Lord Jesus Christto have ascended into the heavens,so we in heart and mind may also ascendand with him continually dwell;who is alive and reigns with you,in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

15I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love towards all the saints, and for this reason 16I do not cease to give thanks for you as I remember you in my prayers. 17I pray that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of

glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation as you come to know

him, 18so that, with the eyes of your heart enlightened, you may know

what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the

riches of his glorious inheritance among the saints, 19and what is the immeasurable greatness

of his power for us who believe, according to the working of his

great power. 20God put this power to work in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, 21far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the age to come. 22And he has put all things under his feet and has made him the head over all things for

the church, 23which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all.

This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

The head that once was crowned with thornsis crowned with glory now:a royal diadem adornsthe mighty victor’s brow.

The highest place that heaven affordsis his, is his by right. The King of Kings and Lord of lords, and heavens eternal light.

The joy of all who dwell above, the joy of all below,to whom he manifests his love, and grants his name to know.

To them the cross, with all its shame, with all its grace is given;their name an everlasting name, their joy the joy of heaven.

They suffer with their Lord below, they reign with him above, their profit and their joy to knowthe mystery of his love.

The cross he bore is life and health, though shame and death to him;his people’s hope, his people’s wealth, their everlasting theme.

Alleluia. Alleluia.God has highly exalted Jesus Christ. Alleluia. At the name of Jesus every knee shall bow.

Alleluia.Let every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.

Alleluia.

Sermon

Glory to you, O Lord.

44Jesus said to the disciples, ‘These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you – that everything written about me in the law of Moses, the prophets, and the psalms must be fulfilled.’ 45Then he opened their minds to understand the scriptures, 46and he said to them, ‘Thus it is written, that the Messiah is to suffer and to rise from the dead on the third day, 47and that repentance and forgiveness of sins is to be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem.

48You are witnesses of these things. 49And see, I am sending upon you what my Father promised; so stay here in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.’50Then he led them out as far as Bethany, and, lifting up his hands, he blessed them. 51While he was blessing them, he withdrew from them and was carried up into heaven. 52And they worshipped him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy; 53and they were continually in the temple blessing God.

This is the Gospel of the Lord.Praise to you, O Christ.

Let us affirm our faith in Jesus Christ the Son of God.Though he was divine,he did not cling to equality with God,but made himself nothing.Taking the form of a slave,he was born in human likeness. He humbled himselfand was obedient to death, even the death of the cross. Therefore God has raised him on high, and given him the name above every name:that at the name of Jesusevery knee should bow,and every voice proclaim that Jesus Christ is Lord,to the glory of God the Father.Amen.

You gave him the name above every name,so that we say:

Jesus is Lord of all:we worship and adore you.

King of righteousness, King of peace, enthroned at the right hand of Majesty on high;Jesus is Lord of all:we worship and adore you.

Great high priest, living for ever to intercede for us;Jesus is Lord of all:we worship and adore you.

Pioneer of our salvation, bringing us to glorythrough death and resurrection;Jesus is Lord of all:we worship and adore you.Every knee bows to him;every tongue confesses, Jesus is Lord,to the glory of God the Father.Therefore with angels and archangels,and with all the company of heaven,we proclaim your great and glorious name,for ever praising you and saying:Holy, holy, holy Lord,God of power and might,heaven and earth are full of your glory.Hosanna in the highest.Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.Hosanna in the highest.Accept our praises, heavenly Father,through your Son our Saviour Jesus Christ,and as we follow his example and obey his command,grant that by the power of your Holy Spiritthese gifts of bread and winemay be to us his body and his blood;

who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread and gave you thanks;he broke it and gave it to his

disciples, saying:Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you;do this in remembrance of me.To you be glory and praise for ever.In the same way, after supperhe took the cup and gave you thanks;he gave it to them, saying: Drink this, all of you;this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins.Do this, as often as you drink it,in remembrance of me.To you be glory and praise for ever. Therefore, heavenly Father,we remember his offering of himselfmade once for all upon the cross;we proclaim his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension;we look for the coming of your kingdom, and with this bread and this cupwe make the memorial of Christ your Son our Lord.Great is the mystery of faith:Christ has died:Christ is risen:Christ will come again.

Accept through him, our great high priest, this our sacrifice of thanks and praise, and as we eat and drink these holy giftsin the presence of your divine majesty, renew us by your Spirit, inspire us with your loveand unite us in the body of your Son,Jesus Christ our Lord.To you be glory and praise for ever.Through him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, with all who stand before you in earth and heaven,we worship you, Father almighty,in songs of everlasting praise:

Hymn 16 final verse

Blessing

All hail the power of Jesus’ name

Then the disciples returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a sabbath day’s journey away. When they had entered the city, they went to the room upstairs where they were staying. They were constantly devoting themselves to prayer, together with certain women, including Mary the mother of Jesus, as well as his brothers.

As we wait in silence, make us ready for your coming Spirit.

As we listen to your word, make us ready for your coming Spirit. As we worship you in majesty, make us ready for your coming Spirit. As we long for your refreshing, make us ready for your coming Spirit. As we long for your renewing, make us ready for your coming Spirit. As we long for your equipping, make us ready for your coming Spirit. As we long for your empowering, make us ready for your coming Spirit.

Followed by short silence

Waiting expectantly for the promised Holy Spiritgo in the peace of Christ. Alleluia, alleluia. Thanks be to God. Alleluia, Alleluia.Let every people, every tongueto him their heart enthral:lift high the universal songand crown him, crown him, crown him, crown him Lord of all.
