ANAL FISSURESANAL FISSURESAnal Fissures are the SECOND MOST COMMON RECTAL AILMENT after haemorrhoidal disease.

Anal Fissures are a common condition affecting people of all ages, but they are most prevalent among 20 - 40 year olds.

Causes:

PERSISTENT HYPERTONIA of the internal anal sphincter muscle, which can be caused by constipation, pain and stress.

LOCAL ISCHAEMIA.

PAIN: the patient will experience intense and acute pain. This is a common symptom which can affect the anal canal and is most prevalent during and after defecation.

According to the data presented in the Annual Report published by the SICCR (Italian Society of Colorectal Surgery) in 2009, its centres managed a total of 5.199 cases of anal fissures, of which 1.924 (37%) underwent surgical treatment.
