....High Power GaN SSPAs

This is where the need for advanced GaN systems isevident.

Evolving technologiesGaN technologies have been evolving steadily over the lastdecade. In 2008, Advantech conducted several trials oversatellite to close a link with 64QAM modulation. The trial wassuccessful using 30m antennas and 800W SSPAs. However, the trial demanded such a large carrier-to-noise (C/N) ratiothat it consumed the entirety of the transponder’s power. Sincethe costs of the transponder could not be shared with apartner, in this instance there were no efficiencies derivedfrom 64QAM.

By 2013, sizable advancements were made including thisexample. Two new teleports were equipped with Advantech’s2.5kW modular GaN systems and 13m Ku-band antennas. This resulted in several sizable milestones:

• For the first time, Ultra HD 4K sporting events weretransmitted worldwide.

• 48 transponders were uplinked from a single antenna andan entire satellite was saturated. This effective use ofsatellite capacity achieved more than 5Gbps of data rates.

• Four antennas were replaced by a single antenna andan all outdoor solution was executed.

• With availability close to 100 percent, there is no singlepoint of failure. This modular system can allow for twoconsecutive failures with no impact on transmissionperformance. Additionally these teleports are unmanned, further reducing the costs to operate them.

• OPEX cost savings exceed US$200,000,000.

Opportunities in 5GToday, the technology has advanced even further. A satellitelink with 256APSK can now be closed using a 4.5m antennaand a 400W C-band GaN SSPA. Due to these significantdevelopments, the 5G opportunities that are presentingthemselves around the world can be successfully addressedby the SATCOM industry. The 5G market will require 8 Bits/Hz, and the RF technology in the SSPA will allow for that.Internet of Things (IoT) technologies alone will require verylarge bandwidths, and the new generation of GaN SSPAsfrom Advantech allow for very good AM/PM performancewhich minimizes the impact of amplitude modulation on phasemodulation when transmitting 256APSK.

Another opportunity surrounding 5G will occur becausevery high linearity, in terms of intermodulation, will be requiredin order to transmit multiple carriers. Additionally, Advantechengineers have solved the challenge of addressing memoryeffects in their GaN design.

The system design was reworked to solve the problem ofvery high noise levels created by mistake or by the incorrectuse of technology. In order to compensate for the high noiselevels, more carrier power is needed in order to achieve thesame C/N ratio. The resulting Advantech modular GaN systemthat has been developed has very low noise generated levelsand generally that translates into lower RF transmitted powermost of the time.

As an example, two teleports whose designs wereexperimented on achieved 3dB more in power efficienciesthan the link budgets originally suggested. Furthermore, arecent 4kW Ku-band system installed at a major InternationalTV Broadcaster produced almost three times more linearpower than expected. This accomplishment allowed the endcustomer to use a 9m antenna, instead of a 13m antenna, resulting in further significant cost reductions.

This critical technology will allow the SATCOM industry tosuccessfully address needs in the IoT and 5G markets. Withthese advancements, uplinks in excess of 20Gbps of data arepossible in a very cost-effective way. The low satellite bandwidthcost and advanced modem technology can now be takenadvantage of. GaN SSPAs do bridge the gap and createsuccessful business outcomes. This is an ideal opportunityfor the satcom teleport market to capitalize on.Multicarrier transmission on high power GaN system
