FILTERING GOOGLE SEARCHES

Filtering Search Results

Google and Boolean Operators

AND and NOT+ = and- = not

Example:• performance enhancing drugs -.com

Note: the is no space between the minus and the .com

Combined + and - Search Filtering

• You can use more than one filter in a single search string

– Example:

• film history +.au* +.pdf -.com*

Filtering by Domain or Location

• You can search within a particular domain:– Example:• site:.edu• site:.gov• site:.org• restaurants site:.au "Port Macquarie"

Filtering Search by File Type

• You can use a plus (+) sign to request a particular file type -- .ppt .doc .pdf .jpg

• You can also do it this way:

• Example: harvard referencing filetype:ppt • Example: ansell adams filetype:jpg

Boolean OR

• Use OR (in capital letters) to search more than one term

• Example:–Youth OR young workers

Google will retrieve sites with either word

Searching within a specific website

• You can search within a specific website. Example:– pdf site:www.aic.gov.au

This will retrieve PDF documents stored in the Australian Institute of Criminology site

• Note: There is no space between site: and the website address.

Searching within a site - again

• Search within a site to find something on a particular topic

Example:

Alexander McQueen site:www.vogue.com

What Does the Asterisk (*) Do?• Use the * to get everything that comes after

• Google will also retrieve sites with:–xxxxx.au/publications–xxxxx.com/links/1945-2000

Synonyms

•Try the ~ symbol andGoogle will also search for words with the same meaning

Example:•photoshop ~tutorial

Will also search for keywords: guide, manual, reference etc.

Parentheses• Use inverted commas to search by a phrase

Example

"imagine all the people“

Don’t worry too much! Google does this anyway

What About Plurals

• Google will automatically plural a word in a search

Example– dog

Will also retrieve sites about dogs
