Photography’s 20/20 Vision: The Humanity of the MomentCourse #: PD403

There is one thing a great photograph must contain, the

humanity of the moment….realism is not enough — there has to be vision, and the two together can

make a good photograph. -Robert Frank

Two premier educational resources, MIAD and the Milwaukee Art Museum (MAM), collaborate to foster the advanced photographer’s development of a personal vision. Coinciding with The Milwaukee Art Museum’s exhibition, “Street Seens” (January 30-April 25), this course examines important historical trends in 20th and 21st

century photography, and how those trends have impacted individual approaches to making photographs. The collaboration includes an invitation to the exhibition Opening, and Lisa Hostetler, MAM’s Curator of Photography, provides a personal viewing of the exhibition and of the

museum’s Print and Drawing study center to look at photographers’ books and discuss sequencing.

Paul Calhoun, internationally exhibited photographer, conducts studio instruction that supports and enhances the development of an individual approach to making photographs, and provides the technical facility to implement a personal vision. Ongoing discussions with guest speakers, invited artists, classmates, regular critique sessions, including a final critique with Lisa Hostetler, augment instruction. Students design and implement a project of personal interest that culminates in a group exhibition at Milwaukee’s City Hall in May. Students have Digital Darkroom access Saturdays from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. during the course.Prerequisites: Pre-existing skill base and SLR Digital Camera.

The classroom will become an ad agency, and the student will work as part of a creative team. Developing an ad campaign for a new product is the objective. A client will visit our agency and will describe his/her needs. The groups will then interpret the client’s needs and create an ad campaign complete with logos, slogan, product design, and radio and TV spots. Each group will then present their ideas to the client when he/she returns on the last class. A visit to the Eisner museum and guest speakers will be included.Prerequisites: Digital camera with minimum of 3 megapixals.

From that point, the process continues with an understanding of what a scholarship level portfolio entails. In-class and out-of-class assignments, group collaborations, workshops on photo and digital documentation, slide presentations and weekly discussions to improve critique skills and the ability to communicate ideas. Drawing from the unclothed model is included in the studio work. A supply list will be sent to registrants. Prerequisites: Must be a junior or senior working at an advanced level.
