DSAGC Support Program
Mental Health Services now offered at DSAGC
Although most people seek therapy in the midst of a personal tragedy or crisis, it’s
often easier to work on these goals when you’re not in the middle of bigger or darker
obstacles. There are many other reasons therapy can be helpful such as:
Reorienting yourself toward what you want and need
Learning to be self-compassionate
Helping you to learn how to be better understanding
Helping you to communicate your feelings.
Learning about relationships
Adjusting to life challenges and changes
Managing stress or learning how to handle something that is causing you distress
Learning what you can do to get unstuck from something

Social Opportunities
Social Clubs (ages 16+)
Social clubs serve as an opportunity for our adults with Down
syndrome to take a leadership role in planning and
implementing their own social activities. These clubs were
created to empower adults and increase independence.
There are numerous social clubs throughout our twelve-county
radius. Each club consists of 4 - 8 adults with Down syndrome
and 2 peer partners*. Social clubs meet regularly once a
month, and the goal is to create a consistent schedule (ex: 1st
Friday of the month at 7 pm). Typically, each member of the
social club plans one monthly outing per year to give each
member and peer partner an opportunity to host. Activities can
include sporting events, bowling, dinners, art classes, grill outs,
etc. Activities take place in one location to avoid "in between" transportation. Social club members
pay for their own participation in an activity
Are you or is someone you know interested in joining a social club? Please contact Brianna Reising at
[email protected] or visit http://www.dsagc.com/programs/social-clubs-ages-16-up/ to find out more!
Advocates in Action (ages 18+)
Advocates in Action is a NEW program for adults with
Down syndrome ages 18 & up. Throughout the year, the
Down Syndrome Association of Greater Cincinnati will
offer a volunteer opportunity for our adults with Down
syndrome. The goal is to spread awareness and give
back to the community.
Are you or is someone you know interested in joining Advocates in
Action? Please contact Brianna Reising at [email protected] or visit http://www.dsagc.com/programs/advocates-in-
action/ to find out more!
Research Study
Aging & Down Syndrome Research Study What will happen if I take part in the study? You will be asked to help us with: Yearly memory and thinking tests that can be done in a place convenient for you and your
family. A yearly visit to the University of Kentucky for a general physical and neurological exam,
blood tests to check your general health, and a MRI brain scan. This visit will take about 3-4 hours, with breaks and snacks.
Purpose of the study This research is trying to understand healthy brain aging in Down syndrome. The goals of this longitudinal project are: to follow neurological, learning and memory changes in adults with Down syndrome as
they age; to examine brain changes using MRI, magnetic resonance imaging (pictures of the brain)
and; to measure changes in blood proteins. Who Can Join? Men and women with Down syndrome age 25 and older. Interested in a study visit each year for at least five years. You, a family member or caregiver will be willing to answer questions about your health. Why Should I Join? You can help us to better understand how the brain changes in people with Down syndrome as they get older. Though there are no direct benefits to you from the research in this study, you may benefit from:
1) medical examinations by experts in the field, provided free of cost as part of the study. 2) blood tests for early detection of medical issues. 3) MRI scans of the head and neck that are done free of cost as part of the study. In
addition, you will be provided with a picture of your brain scan to take home with you. If we do find an illness, the study doctor will tell your family member or guardian and your primary care doctor within 72 hours so that you can be treated. Volunteers are being invited to take part in a research study involving 80-100 people with Down syndrome, which is being done as part of a study that is funded by the National Institutes of Health.

Home Modifications Help Family
Earlier this summer, Morgan Lee would often sit in her kitchen in awe. "I couldn't believe it that I was able to get in the kitchen," she said. "I would find myself just sitting in here because I could. I even startled my mom a few times!" This May Morgan's family worked with Hamilton County DD Services to modify the kitchen. Contractors removed some cabinets, installed new counters and created a lower space that allows her to get in and out of the kitchen. They also added a high-arc motion-sense faucet so Morgan can turn water on and off easily. Before these improvements, Monica Lee said her daughter, who is 14 years old, couldn't get her wheelchair in the kitchen to help with dishes or cooking. It was also difficult to find a place for Morgan to work with her school tutor to complete assignments. "It's great to see the expression on her face because she has the free-dom to be able to come in by herself and be able to do things without help," Monica said. "It's made a world of difference and allows her to be independent." Morgan added that these changes are helping her with new skills. "I'm learning how to stand and get stronger every day," she said. "I like to be able to help my mom or my teacher or nurse." Photos provided by the Lee family
New Medicaid eligibility requirements
On Monday, Aug. 1, the Ohio Department of Medicaid (ODM) began using its new Medicaid eligibility system, Ohio Benefits, for people receiving long-term services and supports. People enrolled in home and community based waivers or residing in intermediate care facilities for indi-viduals with intellectual disabilities (ICFs), including state-operated developmental centers (DCs), will have eligibility records in Ohio Benefits, rather than the current system, CRIS-E.
